Sounds like the 3DS really is something - depending on the price I might have to try it out sometime next year.

    Cheer up, Richard!

Great little video this. Came across very naturally and was informative to boot.

Really fucking want a 3DS now too, you basts. And I haven't played either my PSP or DS for about 2 years :x

    /Pre-orders...
    Dreamcast / PS2 level graphics...NICE!

It has a 800x240 top screen. I wonder if developers could choose not to utilize 3D (maybe they are making a 2D game) and make use of the entire resolution rather than 400x240.

Anyway, the wait until this thing releases is going to be a killer.

    Looks ace.

It's difficult to see anything but total domination for Nintendo in the next few years. Hopefully this will drive MS/Sony to innovate themselves rather than copy Nintendo.
  • ianegg #9 2 years ago

If they use the full resolution then you'd still be stuck with each eye only receiving half of the image, so I doubt it's an option. (Unless the physical light barriers or whatever are somehow adjustable...)

The thing that annoyed me with 3d in the cinema is that it often gets blurry when things are moving quickly, does anyone know if thats a problem here? I haven't seen any reports that mention it yet
  • Ryze #11 2 years ago

Wow - I feel old now that I've seen Rich for the first time in 15 years!
  • L0cky #12 2 years ago

    roz123, that's an interesting point.

If you have Lord of the Rings, go watch some of the battle scenes with the express of intent of looking for blur. You'll notice it isn't just 3D movies, but motion blur is prevelant in many movies (especially cg scenes). Some games also use it, Killzone 2/3 do for sure and usually to hide a poor framerate.

Unfortunately motion blur seems to be over noticable in 3D. I think this may just be a case of the technology still maturing and directors/designers still getting to grips with the finer details that work or don't work.

I'm up for one these I reckon. I'm fairly new to DS does this have a smaller screen than the DSi XL?
  • mazk #14 2 years ago

Leadbetter is a legend. His articles are brilliant and this on-the-fly analysis is informed and quality. Keep it up EG! Minkly's not bad either...
  • Kerome #15 2 years ago

Eurogamer fail... the ad plays but the 3DS hands-on doesn't.

/goes off to E3 coverage on other sites
  • flipperpod #16 2 years ago

If they do a midnight release for this I'm going. Can't wait!
  • Creasy #17 2 years ago

Wow, I hope that guy with the mic wasn't serious about actually watching movies on that device... Ahaha, anyone seriously watching a good movie on a screen like that, is just beyond stupid and shouldn't be allowed to watch movies at all.
  • septimus #18 2 years ago

Love how the hate for 3D and the claims of gimmick have dminished since this announcement. Typical.

Glasses or no glasses 3D can be very good.
  • bad09 #19 2 years ago

    @septimus

For me I'll probably turn the 3D off it's more the line up of games than the 3D gimmick. Portable Starfox that is all I need...
  • Redeye #20 2 years ago

Ryze: Likewise, although in my case it's more like 20. :o

Multiply the amount of "errrs" Richard says by 5 euro's and you have the retail price ;)
  • I\'mListening #22 2 years ago

How will this work with only one screen being 3D capable? Imagine playing a game like sonic rush where you use both screens continuously - it's 3D, now it's 2D, now it's 3D...It will be interesting to see how developers tackle this effectively. Maybe it will force the DS into being more predominately a single screen device?
  • super_monty #23 2 years ago

Excellent work from Mr Leadbetter, i would watch more stuff like this from him, it works with him being interviewed rather than him just talking about it.

    One of EG's better articles.
  • orakio #24 2 years ago

Did that guy in the back just show off his gimp mask to his friends? ... a bit disturbing :-)
  • uiruki #25 2 years ago

What happened to the quiffy doo? :(
  • Mr.DNA #26 2 years ago

"What happened to the quiffy doo?"

One of the editorials of the original Mean Machines, where they had a picture of all of the staff members accompanied by a themed, pithy comment, described Rich's hairstyle as a "council cut". Ah, those halcyon days. Say hello to Radion Automatic for me, Richard.
  • lockload #27 2 years ago

Hmm never owned a ds actually interested in this one
  • InternetRed #28 2 years ago

So this will be (before a PSP2 comes out) the most powerful official handheld out there? I do play the DS occasionally, but it's always the same games, that fit on the hand-held, RPGs, tactical things, 2d platformers... with the analogue nub and PS2 quality, could really see some interesting game genres. Just a shame there's not a second nub. 3d FPS games would be very interesting, not to mention any of the third person action style games.
  • StringBeanJean #29 2 years ago

Wasn't leadbetter always being mocked in Mean Machines for some kind of phone sex shenanigans? Best gaming mag ever, by some distance. I wonder what Radion is up to.
  • tossum #30 2 years ago

Liked the way he used "Nintendo" as an adjective, and yet straight away we all know what he means!!
BTW, superplay was better than mean machines. Only just, but still...
