Definitely buying this. I was going to import it but it's so close now, and I want the extras!

EDIT: Also, I wish they'd sort that damn apostrophe out. Why couldn't they just call it "Demon Souls"?!

I remember first playing it last year and... getting one shotted by the first boss you meet and thinking WTF I didn't think it was meant to be this hard, then I realised you're not possibly meant to kill it as it's part of the story, lol.

  • wizlon #3 2 years ago

@Goodfella apparently it is possible to kill it, and you get a load of rewards if you do, but you have to be an awesome player to do it.
  • sfp_noodle #4 2 years ago

I'd been preventing myself from watching any videos until this was released but this has convinced me to buy. Only the opening 15 minutes but the atmosphere on its own is enough to draw me into the world. the next 2 weeks are going to be so damn long :(
  • Goodfella #5 2 years ago

@wizlon, yeah I know but like you say you have to be one awesome player.
  • Cheapshot #6 2 years ago

I feel a little guilty that I imported this bloody marvellous game, now! All of the import sales are surely going to dent the numbers they'll push here, a lot of my friends have imported it too.

Aaanywho, what a game this is...! If ever there's going to be sequel, get your fingers out of your arse Sony Computer Entertainment and bring it to these shores ASAP next time!
  • Goodfella #7 2 years ago

    @Cheapshot

Indeed, the moment I saw it last year and found out the Chinese version was all in English (except the manual) I had to have it asap, I wasn't going to wait for a possible US or EU release.

I sunk so many hours into the game it's unhealthy, a truly great experience though.
  • Pac #8 2 years ago

You stuggled with that Blue eyed knight a bit :) I would give up now :)

One of the best games ever made.

Hard as nails but gets easier as you progress.
  • JahB #9 2 years ago

i will buy this again. i will suffer again.
  • Goodfella #10 2 years ago

    @Pac

Hehe, indeed. The roll move is your friend.
  • CygnusReactor #11 2 years ago

I'm such a massive monster hunter fan that this instantly appeals to me, especially 'cause it's hard as nails. I had a ps1, ps2 and psp but never got around to buying a ps3, as every game I wanted was on the xbox 360, (& wii for MH:tri) but this is the first game I've seen on the ps3, has has convinced me to buy one.
  • patchbox360 #12 2 years ago

this game is fucking frustrating - the game is basically getting from point (a) - (b) but you will die up to15 times and everytime you die you start from point (a) with all the enemies respawned and even if your 1 cm away from point (b) and die, your sent straight back to point (a) - imagine playing NG on hard setting and you have to get to the boss battle without dying, you get there, the boss kills you in 2 hits and you have to start the entire level again - this is the only game ever that has made me think playing games is a waste of time.
  • Darren #13 2 years ago

I'm interested in the game for sure as I like RPGs but the reports about the harsh difficulty level are putting me off, it's why I never bothered importing it (too expensive a risk). I'm not exactly a gaming maestro and have a low tolerance threshold if I have to constantly do things in games over and over again because of the difficulty.

So is this game for me or not? :?
  • Darren #14 2 years ago

OUCH... just saw patchbox360's post above mine... I guess that answers my question then. Don't think I'll bother in that case. :o
  • mechamonkey #15 2 years ago

To be honest the games first level is probably the hardest in the game as you get to grips with the controls.
I finished it last night (US version) and I was positively toying with the enemies that had scared the bejeezus out of me initially.
    So yeah, it gets easier.
  • Goodfella #16 2 years ago

    @Darren

Sounds like you'd get frustrated with it.

Personally, I found repeating levels over and over was actually fun, the game teaches/expects you to improve how you play, not get stronger by levelling up, which would be too easy.

Yes it's a hard game but only if you don't have the patience to understand how it works. Some of the bosses are actually ridiculously easy when you work them out.

"I'll give it a miss. I like to enjoy games."

    Then you should buy it.
  • webcider #18 2 years ago

This game is one of the only games this generation that actually feel like you play it and not like the game plays it for you.
  • Scirvir #19 2 years ago

It's nowhere near as hard or frustrating as patchbox is claiming. The first run through the game is actually pretty gentle in terms of difficulty. The learning curve is just about spot on.
  • Waffleaber #20 2 years ago

Nice bit of ragdolling by the corpses when you walk over them.

This game is top of my list when I finally get round to getting a PS3 and, more importantly, time.
  • jonnex #21 2 years ago

@Eraysor: The apostrophe's there because the souls belong to the Demon in question. They are the Demon's souls. 'Demon Souls' would imply that said souls are souls of demons, as opposed to expressly stating that they are some souls belonging to a specific Demon.

I'm glad they were brave enough to release a game with a potentially confusing apostrophe in its title, to be honest :) I wonder how many people thought the Demon in the title had just been made plural. The English Possessive Apostrophe FTW.
  • FabricatedLunatic #22 2 years ago

This game is going to kick my arse so hard. Bring it on :-)
  • Razorus #23 2 years ago

Is it REALLY that good? I don't understand what the big deal is. It looks so generic. Never played it, so could someone explain to me why it's so good? If it's unfairly hard like I've heard it is, I won't like it, but perhaps it has redeeming factors. Anyone?
  • butler` #24 2 years ago

    Best to ignore patchbox360

there's checkpoints in the form of SHORTCUTS before each and every boss so that you don't have to repeat all your hard work again.
  • butler` #25 2 years ago

Razorus, try reading one of the many 10/10 and 9/10 reviews, they should give you a good idea of the game's... 'redeeming factors'
  • foamy #26 2 years ago

it's good because you feel good when you progress through it, and you want to come back for more when you die. and than, you start being intelligent about your play and not rushing it. It's one of the best games ever.
  • mkreku #27 2 years ago

What are the odds of this ever getting a PC release? :p
  • Sonic_D #28 2 years ago

The only game on the PS3 I have put serious time into (75+ hours). Great game.
  • UncleLou #29 2 years ago

imagine playing NG on hard setting and you have to get to the boss battle without dying, you get there, the boss kills you in 2 hits and you have to start the entire level again

Er, it's nothing like NG and NG's frustrations. The skills required in Demon's Soul are patience, caution/alertness and "intelligence", so to speak, not good reflexes (at least it's not a difficult game in that respect). That comparison paints a completely misleading picture of the game, like saying Civilization is like Pacman because you have to restart once you've lost.

Bloody hate bad checkpoints, replaying sections, unfair boss battles and whatnot with a burning passion, yet Demon's Souls is one of the best games I've ever played.

It's nice how I get marked down for a genuine question by some of you retards. I don't want to read reviews. I want an honest gamer's opinion, that's all.
  • Vyggo #31 2 years ago

This and Joe Danger really tease me to buy a ps3. This game could very well be "The perfect game" for me.
  • HarryTuttle #32 2 years ago

Can't afford a PS3, and this game makes me jealous. :(
  • UncleLou #33 2 years ago

don't want to read reviews. I want an honest gamer's opinion, that's all.

    Thread's full of them, no?
  • Kenshin001 #34 2 years ago

If a level is too difficult you can always call up up to 3 other players to help you. One of the very few games where playing with randoms is actually enjoyable, at least it was when I was playing with some superb Jp players. I can see how the game might not appeal to some but there have been enough previews, reviews and there's a huge thread on EG for anyone to make an informed decision.
  • CUR715 #35 2 years ago

I've pre-ordered the EU Black Phantom Edition, even though i already own and have Platinumed the Asian and US versions.
But then again, i'm a nutter for this game. Haha!

Those sitting on the fence really should buy it! I've been recommending it for well over a year, and no-one i know who took the plunge has come away disappointed. Trust me!
  • darc #36 2 years ago

I've been away from this game for too long. Trying to decide whether to start a new character, or try to jump back in at the deep end and push for a completion.

One of the best. games. evar.
  • sneetch #37 2 years ago

Even more eagerly awaiting my copy after seeing this. Like the combat system. Reminds me of Severance for some reason.

No doubt I'll develop an unhealthy dependency on moon grass, die a bazillion times and wear a rut through the Nexus. :)
  • Scimarad #38 2 years ago

    @Darren

I wouldn't worry overly about the difficulty. I'm not especially skilled at games and, though I won't say It didn't kick my arse on a few occasions, it never felt like the game was being unfair and it was never particularly annoying. It doesn't really feature any annoying insta-deaths that come out of nowhere from what I recall.
  • Goodfella #39 2 years ago

There are a few areas that will test your patience throughout the game though. Just make sure you're pretty much ALWAYS wearing the Thief Ring.
  • joannadork #40 2 years ago

best ps3 game by far, played for over 300 hours on my us import, level 549,ng+10,this game is hard but not hard enough to stop you moving on,the uk edition comes with a guide from the people who run the wikipedia page for demons souls, read this as it will explain all you need to live longer in bolateria, cannot wait for the uk release just for the uk servers, best tip!,get the blueblood sword as soon as possible (one of the easiest swords to get,oh yes you have to kill flamelurker before you can get ed to enchant weapons (see what i mean about reading the guide) good luck :)

Haven't played this yet. This feels very much like Romero's Doom for this Gen gamers. The vistas, the relentless enemies and the dark atmosphere.

"Haven't played this yet. This feels very much like Romero's Doom for this Gen gamers. The vistas, the relentless enemies and the dark atmosphere."

Even though the gameplay is apples to oranges, this game has always struck me as Shadow of the Collossus' evil step brother. In many ways they are exact opposites (e.g. boss only structure of SoTC vs the hordes of baddies in DS) but they're like two sides of the same coin. Both very atmospheric, with a storyline that is just sort of hinted at with minimal dialog, and so on. Also, both awesome.

SoTC - my favorite game on PS2
DS - my favorite game on PS3 (thus far...)

    @darc

I see what you mean, thinking about it they both have that atmosphere of fighting against insurmountable odds for a supposedly good cause. One being darkly romantic, the other being darkly disturbing.

Both superb games though, and one of the great things about them are the points you mentioned, minimalist story and dialogue. It works in their favour, had they been a lot more fleshed out I fear any mystery or intrigue would have been lost.

Sodding Demon's Souls, it's like delicious masochism.
The thing is perseverance rather than patience, if you're on the fence about whether to get it because of the difficulty, I suggest you get it. Once you learn the path from A to B (which usually includes a openable shortcut once you're near B for the longest sections) it goes from a terror-filled inch by inch grind to a casual monster bashing session as you learn the area, which is good because some of the demons in question are going to take many, many goes `til you trounce them. Others you will probably do first time because the ones you get stuck on tend to cause you to grind up fairly rapidly. For instance Maneater and Flamelurker must have smashed my pasty about fifty times, but Dragon God, Old Monk and Dirty Colossus went down easy.

You really feel like progress is an achievement in this game. :)

Looks good... I might just pick it up now. Hopefully you can get more weapons and bash the shield into the enemies. I like the boot kick move! Please no spiders in this... Lol...

my god that looks as dull as fuck
  • penhalion #47 2 years ago

    @Eraysor

I was taught that the 's is to signify something belonging to the subject so "Demon's Souls" refers to souls belonging to the demon. Demon Souls without the 's simply means a creature called a "demon souls" or even a name "Hi I'm Demon Souls". Dispite what some seemingly high profile academic muppets have been saying. The 's is necessary to depict ownership within English and always has been. It's getting embarassing that only foreign speaking people learning English as a foreign language are still being taught CORRECT english!
  • Atropos #48 2 years ago

I've completed the game, and I still watched this video - that's how good it is...
  • Atropos #49 2 years ago

About the difficulty: I had a friend over who was debating whether to buy a PS3 or not, and he wanted to play this for half-an-hour. He is by no means a hard-core gamer, and since I was sat next to him I forewarned him about HOW to play the game. He played for 3 hours and beat the first demon boss - all without dying a single time (except for at the end of the tutorial, obviously). It all came down to him being forewarned by me, so that he played it cautiously and carefully, like you would if you were ACTUALLY stuck in a demon infested hell-hole. That is the key to this game, and once you get that, it's not that difficult. This also proved the point made by Keza in his review, that while hard, this game is NEVER unfair. If you die, it's always your fault, never the game's.

It is hard, yes, and you will die, yes, but then you'll exult in a way you won't have ever done unless you've beaten an arcade shooter on one credit back in the 80's - and you'll exult like this many many times throughout the game. It is the Game of the Generation for me, hands down, and I own all systems and get all the games for free, so I've played them all. Buy this, and you will not regret it.

Oh, and my friend bought a PS3 the next day, and I haven't seen my copy of Demon's Souls since.
  • kenichi-san #50 2 years ago

Honestly, this guy playing, did not very good job =)
But the game is awsome btw =D
  • makeamazing #51 2 years ago

Looking forward to getting this. This generation ive really tried to try as many different types of games as possible and its generally worked out well, theres not been many games ive not enjoyed in some way or form.

So even though i am slightly concerned about difficultly i really like the look of the game, and cannot wait to get it (though i am trying to get RDR finished asap ;)
