Xbox Live maintenance next Tuesday

Up to 24 hours downtime, no new stuff.

Microsoft will be taking Xbox Live down for maintenance next Tuesday for up to 24 hours, according to Major Nelson.

In time-honoured tradition, he said the maintenance will not introduce any new functions or features, but will pave the way for "some of the recently announced features that will be available later this year".

Live and the My Xbox part of Xbox.com will be down, while the Xbox forums will go into read-only mode, from 00:01am PST (8:01am BST / 9:01am CET) on Tuesday 16th June.

You'd think that by now they'd have learned to add new features without all this downtime.

It's not like the Internet is taken down every time a new site or service is added!

Glad it doesn't interfere with Halo Monday. I'll just play TF2 on PC that day then, should I have the need for online gaming.

You'd have thought by now they would have worked out how to manage these updates without taking the whole system (Xbox live) offline for 24 hours. What a pain.

Doubt my 360 will be back from Munich by then so this doesn't effect me in the slightest.

They seem to have the same problems as apple

Unable to update anything without taking down their store

    Down time noooooo......

It'll be fine. I'll give my other consoles a bit of attention instead.

Well I've taken to using my Xbox 360 offline on occasions because LIVE seems to cause my machine to lag horribly in the Guide menus while accessing Friends, Messages and the Games Library. It's zippy otherwise when I'm not signed in. Since I've reverted to a Silver account there isn't really much point in me being signed in all the time anyway, only when I want to download something from the Marketplace...

... Speaking of which, it's still frustratingly slow when reading the Featured Downloads for me, often taking upto two minutes before I can even click on the otherwise greyed out Download button. Oddly I can stream prevews and videos from the Showcase section within seconds and without pausing or stuttering so it's not my connection.

I don't have this problem at all on my PS3, PC or Wii, all of which share the same wireless connection, so why does it happen with LIVE? Anyone know? It's annoying as it never happened pre-NXE (and, yes, I'm using manual settings and I have a static IP address)... :?

I live in hope that this maintenance will finally fix this issue but I doubt it.

Does anybody know if this down time affect will Games for Windows LIVE?

  • Dizzy #10 3 years ago

Yeah Blizzard/Steam or other companies running similar services never does this.

    Oh wait.. every week.

It will probably affect GFW as well I reckon... probably the same servers.

@Darren - clear your cache, worked for me.

Blimey. They patch their servers every few months and people feel hard done by. Time for a second hobby? Or the pub?

I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices cried out profanities and were suddenly silenced.

@zabeu - You get my vote for funniest post of the year!

    @Darren
Yes those.................long...................pauses.....................on.......................marketplace are very annoying and only seem to happen since the launch of NXE. Even on my brand new red elite ;)
They made a mention of it in last months Edge magazine saying they too were finding it annoying so maybe MS will have a fix for it - or maybe they wont :(
  • aphexstwin #17 3 years ago

well when they DO get round to announcing some of the 'recently announced rip offs and clones' of other peoples stuff *cough*miis*cough* do you reckon you'll be able to add fast forward/rewind to the music player? its only been 6 YEARS!
  • giant_frying_pan #18 3 years ago

I wouldn't mind these maintenance periods if they just added the downtime onto everyone's subscriptions. Before anyone says anything, no I'm not worried about losing my precious eleven pence, but it would seem like a very easy thing to 'do right' by their customers.

I bet you can blame MS SQL Server 2008 for this. If XBOX Live was an airline or ticket booking system they'd never allow this to happen. So do we get a 1 day refund or extra day on our memebership? I've not so far seen the Play Station Network suffer a day outage for upgrades and that's free too..! :)

Of course, after applying Windows Updates you need to reboot a lot of servers...
