Xbox Avatar accessory unlocks in L4D2? News

Xbox 360 PC News by Tom Bramwell

29 October, 2009

With the PC pre-order demo of Left 4 Dead 2 now available in addition to the Xbox 360 one, eager beavers on the Steam forums have pulled it apart and apparently unearthed the prospect of Avatar rewards in the full game.

According to poster Fade Guy, one of the text files lists various garments and accessories (frying pan, garden gnome, L4D2 shirt, Bull Shifters shirt, Depeche Mode shirt, etc.) in sections commented "Avatar Awards", with each unlock seemingly paired with an Achievement-style requirement (beat all the campaigns, rescue Gnome Chompski, and so on).

Valve hasn't said anything to confirm all this, but we wouldn't put it past them, the wily old scamps. Perhaps we'll ask Valve's Chet Faliszek when he turns up to the Eurogamer Expo on Saturday for the Left 4 Dead 2 Developer Session?

Left 4 Dead 2 is due out for PC and Xbox 360 on 20th November in shops, with the Steam release coming earlier on 17th November. Check out our gamepage for more previews, interviews, videos and screenshots than seems reasonable.

It's one of the most inspired names I've ever heard.

Aren't many developers willing to fight off MS like Valve.
Any other game would require you to have card details added to your account before you can unlock Avatar items, and when you finally unlock them in the game, you are automatically billed...

But to answer your question truthfully alot more games will undoubtedly be doing it in the future, no charge of course, hopefully...

You'll find that a lot of new games are now incorporating avatar unlocks. If you see your friend sporting a cool looking avatar costume, then you're likely to get that game just to get the unlock for yourself.

I wasn't planning on getting this - never had the first one - but after playing it at the Expo yesterday I was hooked. Might have to pick it up in the New Year...

It's great that game have FINALLY started offering unlockables. I thought for sure ODST would have a Master Chief outfit or something if you completed the game in Legendary.

I couldn't have been less enthusiastic about NXE initially, but as well as slighly embarrassed, I'm also really surprised about how much I've grown to love it. That includes avatars and even the avatar marketplace, where I've spent a few pounds. It's good to see unlockables are starting to trickle in, but I'd like much more please.

The only type of avatat I want is free stuff.

So these types of Rewards are exactly what I'm after, especially if my avatar is effectively advertising a game I want that item for free!

Didn’t play the first L4D but becoming quite tempted by this. Would be good to see some free (and good) avatar unlocks, as the stuff on the marketplace just seems like too much of a cynical money making exercise

The avatars had zero charm to start with, now that a hat or t-shirt with illegible text costs actual money I find them even less appealing.
