XBLA Summer of Arcade games get dates

Trials HD! Marvel vs. Capcom 2! Etc.!

Major Nelson has revealed a bundle of release dates for this year's Summer of Arcade titles over on his blog.

First up is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-shelled. It's a spruced up version of the arcade beat-em-up and is being released on 22nd July.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 will arrive a week later, complete with 56 characters. Make Ryu and Wolverine fight each other in glorious HD. There are online multiplayer and tag-team options.

Coming on 5th August is Splosion Man. The titular character can "splode himself at will", taking out everything around him in the process. There are more than 50 single-player and 50 multiplayer levels to play through.

Trials HD will arrive on 12th August - it's a m0t0rb1k3 racer with over 50 tracks and two modes. You can customise your character, create your own tracks and share them online.

And finally, Shadow Complex will be available from 19th August. It's the XBLA title Epic showed off at E3 - a side-scrolling adventure game with more than 10 hours of gameplay on offer.

With the exception of Splosion Man, all the titles mentioned above will cost 1200 Microsoft Points (GBP 10.20 / EUR 14.40). Sposion Man comes in at 800 Points (GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.60).

I have been buying only XBLA games the last 2-3 months. It is actually great and a lot cheaper. Maybe I just wanne return to my roots of "smaller" gaming.
  • Zomoniac #3 3 years ago

So in three years the standard price of an XBLA game has increased threefold. 7 more years and they'll be the same price as a retail game.

    >So in three years the standard price of an XBLA game has increased threefold

A lot of them are also more than 3 times bigger.
  • Gnort #5 3 years ago

There's been a lot of bitching about the cost of these games, but if you consider the scale of them, I don't think it's that bad at all. Well, TMNT Re-shelled seems quite expensive, but MvC2, Trials HD and Shadow Complex are three of XBLA's biggest upcoming titles, so I don't think 1200MSP is unreasonable. I'm actually rather pleased that Splosion Man is only 800.
  • muscleblade #6 3 years ago

    @Zomoniac

True, but the quality of the XBLA games has increased even more. I will probably buy all of these.

edit: Dizzy and Gnort kind of made my point.

So aspiring suicide bombers can pick up Splosion Man for training purposes. Cool. Does the game give you bonus points for taking out women and children too?
  • Zomoniac #8 3 years ago

OutRun was 800, SF2 was 800, Rez was 800, Soul Calibur was 800. There have been some big name, big content games out for 800. I don't object to 1,200 point games per se, it just seems they're subtley trying to slide the 'standard' price up without us noticing.
  • muscleblade #9 3 years ago

    @Zomoniac

True, but you said threefold. So you must have been refering to games like Timepilot, Galaga and Dig Dug. The newly released Sega games is 400 a piece and are of the same quality and price as the old 400 point games. And 800 for Rez HD was remarkable.

Oh my god! Heavy hit after heavy hit, that is one line up I'm looking forward to..
  • WinterSnowblind #11 3 years ago

The only games to complain about are things like Marvel vs Capcom, there's no way a quick port should cost 1200 points. For the rest of them, the increased price comes from the simple fact that the games are a lot bigger. People complained back when we had a 150mb file size limitation, and now that it's gone people are complaining that the bigger games are more expensive..

    What do you expect?
  • Eurolamer #12 3 years ago

Agreed. MvsC2 is a bit of a rip at 1200, the rest are good value.
  • KujiGhost #13 3 years ago

Cowabunga!! This is great news; I'll be sure to put my shiny new 120GB HDD and 2100 points to good use!

Rhubarbandcustard, if that is your real name, do you read the sun perchance?
  • Monkey_Puncher #15 3 years ago

The price has definitely increased, but then so has the amount of content and quality of the game. You get a few exceptions like Rez and Bionic Commando, but for the most part the pricing structure seems bang on to me. I can easily see myself buying all these games, along with Secret of Monkey Island, further cementing the fact that I've spent more on downloadable games this year than I have on full retail games.

I bought Red Faction a few weeks back and it's been collecting dust, where as my copy of Worms Armageddon I've barely stopped playing.
  • muscleblade #16 3 years ago

Bionic Commando did cost 1200 at release. Marvel VS Capcom 2 is more than a port btw the graphics has been upscaled quite a bit.

Petulant Radish: Yes, that is my real name. Although my colleagues call me Rubie, my friends call me Ruby Baby and my family call me Custard Sr.

Shadow Complex for me and possibly Splosion Man if the reviews are favourable.
  • Jez360 #19 3 years ago

    @ muscleblade

Nah I got BC: Rearmed on the day of release and it's always been 800 points but personally I think it's worth 1200 points. When you consider the scale of these upcoming games though I think 1200 points is very reasonable.

@muscleblade - "... the graphics have been upscaled quite a bit..."

    Huh?

Upscaling is little more than a piece of software stretching the graphics to a set size, it's not exactly the same thing as remastering a game in proper HD with redrawn sprites, etc. Any graphics card can scale graphics easily, it requires little or no effort on the part of the developer and it certainly does NOT justify a higher price point IMO.

I'll probably pick up Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for old time's sake as it was a favourite of mine from my Dreamcast days and is possibly the only 2D fighting game I've ever really liked. I'd still have preferred it to be 800 MP not 1200 MP though. Or rather the PS3 equivalent because that's the format I'm going for as I prefer the controller for these kinds of games.

    @Darren

Well its a great game and easily worth the 1200 to me and i bet a lot of others. Think of a world where all products where priced only from their production costs. I bet a lot of expensive clothing brands would be a lot cheaper.

Trials HD & Shadow Complex for me.

I agree with the 1200 MSP price point for the games, as the article states Shadow Complex has more than 10 hours of gamplay, thats about the same as most retail games these days.
  • bad09 #23 3 years ago

-7 for being exited about AB? You grumpy gits :(

Edit - bet you all own ST's

What's with the Turtles remake? I liked the cartoon graphics of the original, as it actually looked like turtles. anyone else think it looks really sterile and bland? almost cheap looking, CGI sometimes just sucks.

Wish some of these 1200pt games were released in disc format.
  • bad09 #25 3 years ago

lavalant TIT (heh heh) is mighty fine I loved the SNES version (especially hitting foot scum into the screen!).

Might bite on that one kinda wish they touched up the original tho, it looks awful on live :(

(I'll get more neg but am I the only MvC2 fan not convinced with the new one from the demo - looks kinda funny. Small just not quite right)

@Mappman, if you want an early taste of trials.. there is a demo of trials 2 (which i think trials HD is based on) on Steam. It supports the 360 controller as well.
  • WinterSnowblind #27 3 years ago

I'm really looking forward to Splosion Man, it doesn't seem to be getting a lot of hype, but the Maw was a really great game, if a little short. But considering this has 60+ levels, that shouldn't be an issue here. And of course there's Monkey Island next week for just 800 points.
  • KDR_11k #28 3 years ago

I'd compare Trials more to Motocross Mania or Elastomania than Excite Bike but I found the PC version extremely hard to play because of the unforgiving physics and high granularity in turning movements (you hit the lean button and you turn maybe 80° which tends to be too much).
