UK charts: MW2 beats Bayonetta

New entries fail to shake Xmas standings.

Modern Warfare 2 is still top of the UK all-formats chart, despite hefty competition from acclaimed newcomers Bayonetta and Darksiders.

SEGA's Bayonetta faired the better of the two, debuting in fifth, while THQ's Darksiders had to make do with eighth.

Those were last week's only new releases, which means the rest of the top 40 is relatively unchanged.

Wii Fit Plus (2), Just Dance (3), Wii Sports Resort (4), FIFA 10 (6), Assassin's Creed II (7), New Super Mario Bros. Wii (9) and James Cameron's Avatar (10) round out the top 10.

Bayonetta is also on stand by for me. Still have to complete Uncharted 2, MGS4, Killzone 2, have a baby, complete NSMBWii, Archam Asylum and then!! Then it's time for Bayonetta!!
  • JahB #2 2 years ago

    @ Crofto

review scores don't seem to help sales, and i have to say if i saw bayonetta on a store shelf without knowing anything about it, i certainly wouldn't pick it up. imo the character design and the art direction massively limit the sales and appeal of the game.
  • youhavenomail #3 2 years ago

Well, that's one publisher who moved its game back from the lucrative Xmas market to avoid MW2 and release it when no one buys games just got PWNED! By MW2!!
  • BillyBrush #4 2 years ago

Bayonetta is nigh on perfect in it's genre, on it all weekend.....like DMC and God Hand had a beautiful baby girl.

I'd think us brits have enough good taste for it to do pretty well....when the snow thaws out
  • muscleblade #5 2 years ago

I guess many people with thin wallets are waiting for the mighty Mass Effect 2.
  • smithdown #6 2 years ago

Well I bought my copy of Bayonetta, still waiting for it to come from Shopto. Very excited, hope it arrives today! I've been keeping myself busy with Batman: Arkham Asylum this weekend. I was turned off by the demo, but it got great reviews and was in loads of top 10 games of the year lists, and for £18 I thought I'd give it a go. Happy to say I'm totally loving it! Decent single player games FTW!

Who is still buying Modern Warfare 2? Surely everyone who wants it already has it, its not like its been reduced in price has it?

Anyway, I bought both Bayonetta and Darksiders, both absolutely excellent and a great start to the year.
  • menage #8 2 years ago

Bayonetta is pretty niche, so thats actually decent enough. I mean it get's beaten by MW2 (which is a shame but expected) and wii stuff aimed at kids and housewives, which is alays going too sell more than a hardcore niche game

COD4 is still in the charts. Even WAW is. Don't ask how it happens, just accept that a COD title can't be bargained with, it can't be reasoned with, it doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear when it comes to other games. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you own it.
  • menage #10 2 years ago

Well, I will never own it after borrowing it from a friend and playing it for 3 hours I don't want too play it ever again. So were in for a pretty long haul here:p

    Well,it outsold PS3 MW2,that has to count something...right?
    I blame Wii,(no Wii)=Bayonetta goes to number 2...Wii =yuck
  • Razorus #13 2 years ago

The demo of Bayonetta did nothing to interest me in the game. I haven't tried the finished version yet but I'm quite surprised by how well it's been doing (critically). IGN even used the words Game of the Year in it's review. Surely it's not THAT good?!

It's basically another one of those action games in the vein of DMC, God of War etc, but more to the former, Japanese style.
Now, that's not a bad thing, but what does the game do that makes it amazing? Somebody convince me. Keep in mind I hated DMC4.
  • Shrike #14 2 years ago

Bayonetta at #5 is pretty much proof that TV advertising works. I thought it was going to tank - undeservedly - and I'm still pretty sure it would have done had they not pumped so much money into (fairly vague) publicity. Double-edged news really.
  • metalangel #15 2 years ago

It should really be 'second'. Those non-games for Wii in second, third and fourth shouldn't really be counted any more than Norton Antivirus was in the old charts back in 1999.
  • RedSparrows #16 2 years ago

  • Freek #17 2 years ago

The demo shows some early levels from the game, it doesn't get going till about 2 or 3 hours in, and yes it is a potential GOTY. But if you don't like DMC, you won't like this either.
  • metalmike25 #18 2 years ago

Nice to see Peppa Pig doing well
  • Killerbee #19 2 years ago

These aren't bad placings for Bayonetta and Darksiders, but I do think they're possibly suffering from being a little too close to the Christmas retail aftermath.

I know both are on my wish list, but I'm still busy playing through all the stuff I was given at Christmas (Batman: Arkham Asylum, Assassin's Creed 2 and New Super Mario Bros Wii mostly) to want to buy any new stuff and to be honest, my priority release for January is Mass Effect 2 so any gaming I do between now and then will be to clear the decks for that.

This first quarter 2010 is incredibly packed with new releases and I wonder if a few publishers with hindsight might wish they'd taken their chances in Q4 2009. MW2 was big, but it was only one game...
  • asphaltcowboy #20 2 years ago

Will pick up Bayonetta eventually I think, having given teh demo another spin. But it's Darksiders for me tomorrow, Assassin's Creed is nearly wrapped up and Mass Effect 2 at the end of the month!
  • muscleblade #21 2 years ago

"IGN even used the words Game of the Year in it's review. Surely it's not THAT good?! "

Each to their own. I think its more like game of the decade really. Its incredible! Completed it last night (took me 5 days) and i started my Hard mode playthrough right away even with Darksiders sitting on my shelf unopened. Hard mode is very hard though.

edit: This game is right up my alley though. Ninja Gaiden is my favourite game of all time.

Was looking at how high Just Dance is. It's funny to see a game savaged and ignored by the critical community (41 on Metacritic based on only 9 reviews) showing massive popular appeal - third in sales and receiving a Metacritic score of 88 based on 35 people's reviews.

Eurogamer is supposed to be a serious site yet it's completely ignored this (one news article and a couple of videos). I used to think Edge were up their own arse for ignoring Fifa yet surely Eurogamer is doing the same here. Couldn't we get some coverage? I'd rather stick my nuts on the hotplate than play this type of game but surely it has to be interesting for anyone in the industry to see what's doing well (I'm not in the industry, I'm just sad and curious but there must be a few people who come here that are).

Never seen any marketing for this game so it must be more than just a massive advertising spend, be interesting to know how it did it. Maybe it just goes to show the gap that sometimes arises between what the critical press like and what the consumer likes.

"Nice to see Peppa Pig doing well"

I might be slightly responsible for that, I got it as a gift for my daughter... I got Darksiders* as well to even it out though! :)

EDIT: *NOT for my daughter obviously! :p

They should've called it "Sarah Palin Striptease Fighter II". Guaranteed number 1.
  • RobotRocker #25 2 years ago

Charting at 5 is great for Bayonetta considering its a new franchise and coming out of the post Christmas lull. Sega are probably chuffed to bits.
  • Quixz #26 2 years ago

Sorry Bayonetta i'm waiting for Shepherd. :(
  • secombe #27 2 years ago

    @ macmurphy

Just Dance is huge outside of 'gaming', if my family/friends are anything to go by, one person buys it, their friends come round and play it, then they go out and buy it, and so on and so on. It was played non-stop in our house for 4hrs last night by 6 people, they couldn't get enough of it.

Reviewers have widely ignored it, or looked at it from a completely inappropriate angle (see the shockingly poor IGN review as a good example of this), it's hardly ground breaking but it is immensely fun. One of the amusing criticisms in reviews I've seen is that everything is unlocked...I'm not sure if these reviewers have discussed the game with anyone that actually enjoys it, but they were all mentioning how it was cool that everything was available. I've never understood party games that require you to play the one player game to unlock stuff...what's the point? People just want to fire it up and play.

I've said it previously, but I wish I enjoyed gaming as much as my other half enjoys Just Dance.
  • oreillymj #28 2 years ago

TBH Bayonetta just doesn't float my boat. I'm sure there's a heap of subtlety to it that I don't get, but to me it's just endless mashing of the kick and punch buttons. And that grows tiresome after 5mins. I played the demo and got bored. Also the GFX may be nice, but everything is happening too fast to take them in much of the time.

I may be in a minority here, but perhaps not within the overall gaming community.
I'm waiting for something a bit slower paced where good strategy can make up for the slower response times of a 30 something ;-)
    Hopefully BBFC 2.
  • Paulie_P #29 2 years ago

I played the demo of Bayonetta the other night and it does what it sets out to do very well. However it just seems too bizarre and out-there for me. I'm normally very open minded too but the whole thing seems very immature and its like some world dreamt up by some 12 year old. Maybe some people out there like that but I think it doesn't appeal to a wider public. If they don't get it, they don't buy it. What they do get is MW and just because they buy it doesn't make them sheep.
  • sickpuppysoftware #30 2 years ago

I bought Darksiders rather than Bayonetta purely because of the broken PS3 port. I may buy it at a later date once it's been properly patched, hopefully at a budget price.
  • menage #31 2 years ago

    @Paulie P

Yeah, cause shooting thousands of guys in the head all the time is adult and mature as hell.

I'm sick of people calling bayo made by a 12 year old but happely go on headshotting their way through burger king. Hows that any different. I'd prefer tits over bullets anyday. It's all garbage if you looks at it that way.
  • drumbaby #32 2 years ago

I'm waiting until a patch is brought out that irons out the worst faults of the PS3 version before I go anywhere near Bayonetta. I don't want my first taste of a next gen' Kamiya game to be soured by such stupidly avoidable yet glaringly obvious technical issues.
    Edited by 1 at 11/01/10 @ 14:20
  • JahB #33 2 years ago

    @menage

it's not about the gameplay, just about the setting. you can't argue that even Bayonetta herself looks like a 12-year old's wet dream, but is not even close to an adult's interpretation of a woman.
  • Anthony_UK #34 2 years ago

The 2 problems with the demo are that your fully powered up (you don't have the crazy hair moves right from the off) and the opening clock tower scene (Which is the opening of the game but slightly altered) is one of those 'chuck you in the thick of things with no intro or tutorial' starts to a game. The tutorial and 'proper 1st level' are right after that scene (which isn't in the demo) and slower start to things eases you alot more into the game. I don't think this is really all that clear from the demo, and can appear a little to WTF!!

It nearly put me off, but I'm glad it didnt, the game is amazing!
  • captainrentboy #35 2 years ago

Tried Bayonetta for a couple of hours and really couldn't get into it, the camera seemed to be flopping about all over the place, the main character was annoying and the game's story was pure nonsense, I literally had no idea what the fudge was going on. Darksiders on the other hand I've been enjoying immensely, just fought the main second boss and got a few new power ups, thankfully it seems to show no sign of slowing down on the awesome front. Although the developers need kicking in the teeth for the quite awful opening 15 minutes or so, I'd imagine some folk not even getting through the opening section and giving up, not realising it has little reflection on the stuff that comes after.
  • menage #36 2 years ago

I still fail to see what's adult about MW2 in that context. I mean, violence and war are hardly "fun" things in real life, but because it's a game it's suddenly mature and okay to shoot someone in the head. I find that just as juvenile as showing some ass in a leather pants. I haven't got problem with both, but the differentiation is ridiculous.

Don't get me wrong I like a bit of shooting as much as the next one. But let's not kid ourselves in the mature-ness of MW2 factor. 12 year olds screaming u r gay on the internet really isn't anything different. And the Promo spots for MW directly appealed to that childish crowd with the FAG thing.

  • Paulie_P #37 2 years ago

    @menage

Fair enough I'll give you that MW 2 isn't exactly the most mature game out there but compared to Bayonetta its bloody Shakespeare! '

(Probably went a bit far there)
  • menage #38 2 years ago

    Probably:p

I played Bayo for 10 hours now and it's not that bad actually. yes there's some sexy woman kicking the crap out of demon's and angels, getting nekkid at times, But overall it's less than you would expect. The story is so over the top it's impossible to take serious, like one big joke actually. So in that context I can see the fun of it all. It's certainly isn't as bad as Itagaki stuff.
  • macmurphy #39 2 years ago

    @ secombe

Interesting to hear from someone who's played it. My partner loves Boogie so this might be one to get. To be honest if it's a game I can bring out at a party and have a laugh with I'd shell out. I dance like old people fuck so maybe it can give me some pointers.

Just find it weird that Eurogamer does all these niche articles and then ignores some big old elephants in the corner when it comes to Wii. I can understand that the people who play these games might not come to this site, but anything that sells that much it is guranteed to impact gaming as a whole and at least deserves a review. If I ever see it cheap I'm going to pick it up.

More people need to play Bayonetta. It's all kinds of lovely burned onto plastic.
  • TRUTH #42 2 years ago

Bayonetta is the BEST action game out there - the demo is just a introduction, nothing more!...Graphically it's top stuff especially when you seen the effects and detail onscreen with great fluidity (360 version played), simply makes you wonder how the 360/PS3 manages. The fighting mechanics are best and will be the standard all other action games will be judged on!

Don't judge a game which has been classed as one of the best acton games to hit consoles by a introduction demo as some have on this page!

  • smelly #43 2 years ago

Yet again gamers prove they cant tell a great game from a severely mediocre overhyped one.
  • waggy79 #44 2 years ago

Bayonettas combat is beautiful, yes the story is mad as a box of badgers but that didnt stop Metal Gear did it? Kinda surprised that more people on my friends list are playing Darksiders though, from what ive seen it looks quite generic.
  • Chalee #45 2 years ago

Fantastic to see Bayonetta doing so well. Platinum deserve commercial success. Everything they've done has been unequivocally excellent
  • waggy79 #46 2 years ago

Didnt they do Madworld aswell? Its just ive ordered it for a fiver and the reviews are a bit varied. Anyone played it?
  • TRUTH #47 2 years ago

Bayonetta - The best action game YES!...The makers of this gem also made the original DMC & Resident Evil I & II (many consider the best); they're also the people behind Okami, Madworld, Viewtiful Joe.

All top quality and deserves your attention!

By the way it's proven 'Wii Fit' DOES NOT make you lose weight or become fitter - It hardly burns calories to fat burning extent!...It's a gimmick for fitness!!...Go for a jog or walk or diet!

Bayonetta is not about the story or the art direction (very japanese)for me. Its about the superior gameplay mechanics. People that cant appreciate that maybe dont get it. Its not a button masher. The combat system is very delicate and demands perfect timing. The game is better on hard than normal actually. I tried it on easy just to see the difference and the gameplay is way to simple on easy mode.
