THQ doing more de Blob for Wii

The future's bright.

THQ plans to make more de Blob games for Wii, after the original won critical hearts and bounced eagerly off shop shelves.

"We're pleased with de Blob's performance worldwide. It's a great intellectual property and you can tell your readers to expect to see more of de Blob in the future," THQ told IGN.

De Blob, which popped up on Wii last September, challenged players to restore vibrant colour to blank-canvas levels by bouncing a paint-laden blob up walls, off buildings and into trees.

The result was a visual treat; a title bursting with the sort of personality the Wii was built for.

Head over to our de Blob review to find out much more.

Option to put jump onto a button please.

    Don't be so insincere, dave.

    Shorter levels, more save points.
  • MoGamer2006 #5 3 years ago

+1 jaxon58 - some of the levels got quite wearing, such was their length. Still a great game, tho' - a sequel with the niggles fixed could be classic, though I do wonder if there's much more could be done to expand on the basic idea.

I'm very pleased at the news, but baffled at the spin. It sold about 2 copies, at least 5 of which were freebies to THQ employees.
  • jaxon58 #7 3 years ago

It sold well over 1 million, at least.

Great news. Agreed with the minor quibbles mentioned by jaxon and MoGamer, though I have no problem with waggle jump. Best Wii game of last year imo (not a Brawl fan and MKWii was good but not great).

It would probably help to know something before posting out of your hindquarters. The game sold 230,000 copies in North America alone, outselling Wario Land Shake by a huge margin.

I did. In the UK, de Blob entered the charts in its second week of release at No 38 in the charts, then scored a No 29 two weeks later. That's it. If you call that a good performance, you should go and write for New Labour.

The annoying thing about its performance here is that it's a good game, well worthy of a sequel. But it didn't perform at retail.

As hard as it may be to believe, there are places in the world outside of North America and the UK.
  • retr0gamer #12 3 years ago

It might not have preformed well but I'd say development costs of their student team that made it were very low so that it did make a bit of money back.

I for one welcome a sequel since the first game was a joy to play.

The sum total of your research was the two-week launch window in the UK?

I certainly hope you don't have a career in the sciences with that kind of statistical acumen...

Praise be! A good 3rd-party Wii game selling enough to justify a sequel! First No More Heroes and now this, if only Okami hadn't bombed.....

There are only 250 people in the world, I know because I sat in the town square on Sunday morning and counted them over a two hour period. Anyone who tells you otherwise should work for [insert political party in power] as a spin doctor.

The game sold extremely well in Australia, where it was developed.

Obviously those people were biased and don't count.

No. I said it charted after TWO weeks on release and then charted again TWO weeks later. 2+2=4. I then said "that's it", indicating that it didn't chart again. I checked the charts for every week since the game's release to make sure of my facts.

So, wrong on all counts. Your school should be put in Special Measures.

I certainly hope you don't have a career in the sciences with that kind of statistical acumen...

That's rich coming from someone who can't read or add up to 4. :)

I'm sorry, but if your sole measure of sales is based upon how often things are in "the charts" then that's piss-poor.

How about actual numbers of sales since release since clearly this game and many others on Wii often sell at less-than-chart-making levels but add up to a sum greater than many games that sit on the charts for a week or two.

    @ Eighthours

It clearly sold enough to justify a sequel. Wouldn't you be better arguing that the Earth was flat?

So, just to confirm, the entire basis for your argument that de Blob sold poorly is the fact that it only appeared in the UK charts twice?

I'm asking as it seems a very shaky basis for your argument. Games like this are often slow burners, (I know I've only just received my copy today) and the months from September (when de Blob launched) onwards were packed with most of the high-profile, big-budget blockbusters from last year, a game could sell a lot during that time without even registering in the charts.

"It sold about 2 copies, at least 5 of which were freebies to THQ employees. "

I must've bought the other copy then.. best 3rd party game on the wii (not that that's hard...)
  • Burkey123 #23 3 years ago

A great game which deserves a sequel. Cant wait.
  • smelly #24 3 years ago

The title of this story lies a bit though..THQ said "you can expect to see more "de blob" games in the future"

They dont mention wii at all.. for all we know they could be doing a ps4 version...

What depresses me is - great news like this gets 24 comments (25 counting this one).. but some wanky topic about which console has the marginally better pixels when displaying lego batman gets 1000s.

I hope a new blob game is released on Wii as the original was innovative and quite challenging but overall it was fun.

jaxon58 +1000 since I had to quit the game once after 30 minutes of playing and lost all my progress and I wasn't far from the end of the level :(
