Supreme Commander demo
Try out Taylor's "labour of love".
Gas Powered Games has released a playable demo of Supreme Commander, its hotly anticipated real-time strategy game, the full version of which is due out on 16th February.
Available from all the usual mirrors, the 1GB demo puts you at the reins of the Cybran Nation, one of three playable factions, and lets you tackle the early bits of the single-player campaign as well as a skirmish map at three difficulty levels.
"Supreme Commander was more than a labour of love; it was the completion of a journey we started a long time ago and was a game that we've wanted to make for a very long time," developer Chris Taylor said in a message accompanying the release.
"To see the game complete is an incredible reward for us, especially because it delivers many of the goals we set for ourselves back in 2003. And now the journey is complete, and we will soon embark on another.
"From all of us here at GPG and the SupCom team, to all of you, we hope Supreme Commander brings you many hours of entertainment and delivers a new and exciting experience. And most of all, we hope it's everything you had hoped it would be... we worked very hard to make that happen."
We certainly thought it was a bit good when we hacked our way through some preview code not too long ago. Look out for a review in the near future.

Shame my PC will likely buckle in and die

I hope it's good, I could use a good RTS again.

# 3.0 GHz Intel or equivalent AMD processor or better
# 1GB RAM or better
# 8GB available hard drive space
# 256 MB Video RAM, with DirectX 9 Vertex Shader/Pixel Shader 2.0 support (Nvidia 6800 or better)
Anything less and you are asking for trouble (like 2 FPS). A dual core processor helps a lot (as does a second monitor - there's a lot going on)

cracking little game, wish they spent an extra 2-3 months polishing the corners tho.

It's really good, feels and plays like Total Annihilation although as bad points I have to say the interface is not the best and you don't feel as much as in Total Annihilation (battles are not as immersive). This could be because the fantastic zoom though. AI is not the best but miles better than most RTS games I have played to date.
It runs great on my machine so can't complain about that.
Got to say about the interface that people in the mod com is already working on that so I would expect improved ones as soon as the game is out.

The core Total Annihilation gameplay is superb though. If you are a TA fan you'll feel at home straight away... but that's the problem, I found myself just queuing up the same set of orders I would have done in TA, building my forces in exactly the same way and winning in exactly the same way.
If you've never played TA then this is one great game, if you have, you might find it just gets a big "MEH"
