Street Fighter IV coming to iPhone

Complete with Bluetooth multiplayer.

Capcom has announced plans to bring Street Fighter IV to the iPhone.

The company has spent months working on a control system, according to IGN. You'll use a virtual pad and buttons, choosing from a range of control configurations with various button positions, transparency and set-up. A Dojo Mode will help you get acquainted before entering the tournament proper.

The iPhone game will use the same assets as the current console versions so the recently introduced art style will feature, along with scaled down character models. Complete move sets will be present and correct, including Ultras and their full animations.

Only two fighters are confirmed so far - Ken and Ryu. However, a "large roster" is promised and said to feature both old and new faces.

On top of all that, there's a multiplayer mode so two players can battle it out via Bluetooth.

Capcom has yet to announce a price, but Street Fighter IV is scheduled to hit the US App Store in March.

(Caveat: I like my iPhone, I like Capcom and I like Street Fighter.)

Virtual controls for a fighter? That's going to be a tough sell.

Am I going to trigger special moves by voice activation, or will this game just have crappy controls?
  • Dillinger #4 2 years ago

i struggle to think of a game with controls that are MORE unsuited to iphone than Street Fighter... :-/
  • actionfitz #5 2 years ago

    erm... no.
i love my streetfighter but my iphone is a horrible platfom for that type of game.
The battery on my 3GS can barely handle an hour of Peggle or Dungeon Hunter :/
Any kind of 3D game I own on it has controls designed by Satan himself. Can just imagine trying to pull off an ultra combo with my meaty mitts covering half the screen. ;/
  • Ryboy #6 2 years ago

LOL, if they can pull it off it could be the greatest iPhone game. But I just cannot see how they are going to work the controls...

Maybe a little pad that you plug into the charger/iTunes socket...
  • Caimbeul #7 2 years ago

ROFL, Sorry it wont work...Capcom are just trying to milk it now.
  • erp #8 2 years ago

Agreed about the above comments about the controls. (Euuuugh.)

Also: I smell extreme bullshit in the "uses same assets" statement too. Yeah right.

i can't even stand any on screen dpads like in GTA/Dungeon Hunter so not much chance of liking this ;z

Is it April the 1st already??
  • Gearskin #11 2 years ago

People... if it didn't work, do you think they'd waste time and money?
  • kinky_mong #12 2 years ago

"People... if it didn't work, do you think they'd waste time and money?"

They released Dark Void and Bionic Commando. So yes.

Since when was functionality a criteria for iPhone applications? I thought the only two things that need to apply are a) being available on the app store b) being cheap. When I look at the crap people are buying I really don't think much else matters.

As all the others said I don't see how this will work. I never played on an iPhone and I can't say how well the touch controls hold up but even if they are working quite well for other games (of which I have no doubt) it's still a bit hard to think of how exactly a game like SF IV will work.
  • Velios #14 2 years ago

Word just in...You will need 6 iPhones to play it.
  • chrisola #15 2 years ago

Let me get this straight: the 'virtual buttons' are overlaid on the screen, with the fighting happening mostly in the center (so you can see most of the action). Then you hold the iphone just like a control pad, except instead of pressing actual buttons and moving a dpad, your thumbs move over the screen.

I've never gamed with an Iphone, but my guess is it'd be fairly unresponsive, and you would lose shoulder buttons.

In theory, i guess it works!

The screenshots look stunning for an iphone game but im also worried about the controls.
  • Saki #17 2 years ago

Oh, C'mon Capcom, you couldn't make it for the Wii, but you made it to iPhone!Geez! =(
  • The_Inquisitor #18 2 years ago

I've never been able to get my Bluetooth on my basic 3G. I heard there was an issue on these models so I can't see the multi player being a possibility for me.
  • Luckyjim #19 2 years ago

I can't think of a worse game for virtual buttons. It's going to be unplayable.

    @Gearskin

God bless your eternal optimism but yes, they would make it, even if it controlled like a dog. Money's money to these people.

Saying that, I find most traditional games on the iphone that are shoe-horned with virtual buttons unplayable. If a game requires complex maneuvers and quick reactions nothing beats the tactile feedback of a good old-fashioned d-pad and set of buttons. I really enjoy my iphone, but I only play games on it that suits its layout.

    This will be interesting!

It would never happen, but a Bluetooth controller would help this game to succeed. Apple should consider offering this...
  • clearblue #21 2 years ago

Brilliant! I guess we can expect a port of a flight simulator next with all the buttons layed out on-screen...

Shoruuuu... Fuck I dropped my phone!
  • sega #23 2 years ago

Oh there's no way Street Fighter 4 can be done on the Wii, right Capcom? After the success of Tatsunoko Vs Capcom, the most successful games console of the moment is still not good enough? Whateverrrrrrr.
  • Alkeno #24 2 years ago

Capcom, sometimes so great, sometimes so greedy. This is shameful...
  • poopmonster #25 2 years ago

Controls in Blades of Fury work quite well, though the game is about as deep as a teacup.

Mind you, it only has two action buttons... four may be a stretch

Edit: and yeah, "same graphics" is marketing bull

    @sega.@saki

It's a marketing decision not to release it on the wii, not a technical one. TvC doesn't need a direct rival from the same company on the same platform. It's exactly why TvC hasnt been released on ps3/360 - and we know they're technically capable as well as having an already established HUGE player base receptive to a fighting game from Capcom.

I've seen people play SNES emus with SF2 on the iphone.... it doesn't work.

@The_Inquisitor: I've never been able to get my Bluetooth on my basic 3G. I heard there was an issue on these models so I can't see the multi player being a possibility for me.

I had a basic 3G for a year (before upgrading to the 3G S) and never had any bluetooth problems. Sounds like your phone is broken.
