Red Dead Social Club features detailed

Exclusive missions, challenges and more.

Rockstar has revealed details of how its Social Club online system will work with Red Dead Redemption, promising exclusive unlockable content.

Social Club users will be tasked with particular bonus challenges - one such mission, unlocked early in the game, has you trying to kill three enemies in one Dead Eye burst, and lasso and drag a gang member around while on horseback, after which you unlock special bullets that could set your enemies on fire.

There will also be cumulative challenges for Social Club users, with avatar rewards on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.

Plus you can expect an in-game Social Club newsfeed via a local newspaper, online leaderboards, a checklist for people trying to achieve 100 per cent completion, and special multiplayer events.

The Social Club elements will go live once the game is released - it's due out for PS3 and Xbox 360 on 21st May - and you can read more about them on the Rockstar website.

    I hope those Pyro bullets are more a cheat mode type of addition than a normal upgrade that is completely out of place in a Western.

    Bullets that set people on fire? In my western? Eh... way to lower my enthusiasm from buying to wait and see status, Rockstar...

    I am not convinced by the concept of "social clubs" in games, it sounds horribly Facebookish to me. I guess I can sort of see the value for clans but then only in a game such as MAG, where there is an ongoing "story" to the game (the Shadow War in MAG's case). For a game with regular flavour multiplayer where matches do not have any long term impact, it seems rather pointless.

    Still want the game though.

    @jefranklin18

    I think social club is just the name they thought sounded friendly. To my eyes the service isn't a whole lot different to Ubisoft's ... errr.... I've forgotten the name of it. The thing in AC2 that lets you get special Ubi achievements and buy extra daggers.

    Hmmm, I guess at least social club is memorable :)

    @BBIAJ: You unlock three things by meeting the requirements of the driving test (basically stat based stuff - drive x number of miles, use the abilities x number of times)... The first unlock is hydraulics you can fit to pretty much any car (for added pimpness), I can't remember what the second one is, the third is the Audi R8 which you can't get any other way. Sorta a car to show off how elite you are. Fun stuff, and it's free.

    @jefranklin: It's not like that if you don't want it to be. The Midnight Club one lets you get the bonus unlocks by doing the 'driving test' stuff above. But it also lets you download any photos you've uploaded from the game, sign up for tournaments, and view/rate other people's customized car designs.

    It's silly shit but it's also entirely optional.

    I'm still curious what's "social" about it... I mean, when I first played GTA I'd check my stats on it, but it's not like it had forums or chat, or indeed any interaction with other human beings...
