Red Dead DLC announced

Four packs due over the coming months.

Rockstar has announced plans for a series of downloadable content packs for open world Western Red Dead Redemption.

Four packs of add-on DLC will be released for the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live "over the next few months", three of which will be priced $9.99 on PSN and 800 Microsoft Points (£6.85) on Xbox Live.

"We want to continue to provide Red Dead Redemption’s fans with a steady supply of innovative new content," said Sam Houser, founder of Rockstar Games.

"Our goal is to continue to pack as much entertaining gameplay and as many surprises as we can into the massive world of Red Dead Redemption over the coming months."

The first, called the Legends and Killers Pack, will be released "at the beginning of August", and will include nine new multiplayer map locations, more than doubling the amount of territories in the multiplayer competitive modes. It'll also bring eight new multiplayer characters, letting you play as characters from Redemption's predecessor, Red Dead Revolver.

It'll also introduce a new projectile weapon, the Tomahawk, with corresponding challenges for single-player and multiplayer gameplay.

And, of course, there will be new achievements and trophies.

The second DLC is called the Liars and Cheats Pack. It'll bring an Attack and Defend multiplayer competitive mode and challenges, new multiplayer horce races, complete with mounted combat, will let you play as the heroes and villains of Red Dead Redemption as well as eight new multiplayer characters. It'll also include multiplayer versions of Liars Dice and Poker from the single-player game. The new weapon is the Explosive Rifle. Release date is TBC.

Also TBC is the Free Roam Pack, which includes additional Free Roam challenges, new action areas and defensive placements, posse scoring and leaderboards, and new anti-griefing measures in Free Roam. The pricing on that one is yet to be announced.

And finally there's the Undead Nightmare Pack, in which "ghost towns and cemeteries come alive in a West gone horribly wrong". That'll bring a new single-player adventure, challenges and quests, eight new multiplayer zombie characters, additional animals in the world, new dynamic events and more. It'll be out in the autumn.

Yeah, it all made sense until the zombies bit!

Wonder what the anti-griefing measures will be, anyone know?

Didn't Rockstar not attend E3 in favour of holding its own press conference type thing? Any word on when that'll happen?
  • Derblington #5 2 years ago

This is really, really good news.

I'd prefer two packs. One with multiplayer content and the other with single player.

Also zombies... the go-to guys lol

Starting to feel the pinch on my udders these days.
  • Psiloc #9 2 years ago

So the only add-on for us old types who prefer a nice single player game is some bullshit with zombies?

    Cool.
  • Raznilof #10 2 years ago

skip..skip..skip..wait a minute... zombi's? Wild West...Near Dark...well perhaps not near dark but that sounds great!
  • DreadedWalrus #11 2 years ago

The problem I have with DLC is that it deprecates in value so much slower than the games themselves. Here we've got four DLC packs, three of which are 800 MSP (£6.85), so the fourth is either going to be 1200 or free most likely, but if we say that's at 800 for the sake of argument, that's 4x£6.85=£27.40. By the time all these four DLC packs are out, the DLC will likely cost more than the rest of the game put together, and as stated DLC takes ages to come down in price.

I picked up Prince of Persia (the new-style one) on 360 in November-ish for a couple of quid preowned from Gamestation. Meanwhile, the DLC for the game, which came out way back in March 2009, still costs 800 points. Knights of the Nine still costs 800 points on XBLMarketplace, despite coming out in 2006. Shivering Isles is still 2400 points (£20) despite being able to pick up the full game and all the DLC at retail for much less than that.

@DreadedWalrus Dry your eyes and fork out £6 / $10
  • geeza2020 #13 2 years ago

They should have called the last one Red Dead Rising.
  • kinky_mong #14 2 years ago

No, no, no, NO! Multiplayer add ons that you have to pay for only split the community into haves and have-nots making it very difficult to find a game, which will lbe a nightmare on RDR unless they sort out the existing matchmaking problems.

Why have they not stuck to the excellent example of GTAIV's DLC in making large worthwhile expansions?

    Red Undead Redemption

  • kinky_mong #16 2 years ago

And I sincerely hope they don't charge for that Free Roam pack considering those additions sound more like a patch to fix problems.
  • Koozer #17 2 years ago

So you have to buy the "anti-griefing methods?" Great...

Multiplayer DLC and zombie mode *snore*
    Singler player missions *whoop*
  • DreadedWalrus #19 2 years ago

@kebab1701 You don't think it's a problem when you buy an old game and it almost always costs more to buy the DLC than it does to buy the game itself?

Singler player missions? i dont see that mentioned?
  • kangarootoo #21 2 years ago

Zombies? Hmmm. Will probably be fun.

I literally finished the single player story last night, so this is perhaps good news (though I don't tend to go for MP maps and the like).

And there are multiplayer horse races? But horse racing is just a matter of finding the best frequency at which to tap/pause the A button and then point your horse in the right direction. Its not like cornering is particularly difficult in RDR.
  • CaptainQuint #22 2 years ago

  • kebab1701 #23 2 years ago

@DreadedWalrus No, because I know if I buy the DLC the majority of the money will go to the developers of the games rather than to shops.
  • wilesy #24 2 years ago

'' It'll bring an Attack and Defend multiplayer competitive mode and challenges, new multiplayer horce races, complete with mounted combat, will let you play as the heroes and villains of Red Dead Redemption as well as eight new multiplayer characters.''

What the bejebus is a horce? Did it mean to say Horace? Maybe an update to Horace goes skiing?
  • kangarootoo #25 2 years ago

    @DreadedWalrus

Its only a problem if you make it one. You don't have to buy the DLC.

You could just whatever game you like cheap, and then you know, play it.
  • RelaxedMikki #26 2 years ago

DLC for Horace Goes Skiiing? About ruddy time... I was promised if you cross back over the road you get to drive the ambulance...

Multiplayer with Poker should be nice. I was hoping for that from the start...

Damn, this game is fine...All the games that I was going to catch up on or buy over the summer are all in the 'gonna have to wait a while 'pile; this game is taking all of my gaming time and now it looks like it will eat up even more. Tremendous!
  • afghan_jones #28 2 years ago

All sounds great, except for two things.

    1. That stuff isnt worth an additional 20 plus quid on top of the cost of the game by any means

    2. Im sick to death of DLC as a shitty mean to elongate games. Ive played the game, loved it and that should be the end of things. Drips of content over a number of months does nothing for me.
  • Acrid #29 2 years ago

if they're as quality as the GTA4 DLC then please do R*
  • ParanoidZombie #30 2 years ago

This is a sad day for the zombie community.

"2. Im sick to death of DLC as a shitty mean to elongate games. Ive played the game, loved it and that should be the end of things. Drips of content over a number of months does nothing for me."

    So don't buy it?
  • Soton4084 #32 2 years ago

I'm a bit disappointed as I was hoping for more single player content. All we get is one DLC pack!
  • metalangel #33 2 years ago

Playing last night, decided I want: driveable car and armoured car in all modes, poker in multiplayer, trains in multiplayer (with the train robbery submission), more co op tasks in unused corners of the map, ability to swim, lasso in multiplayer.
  • Lebowski #34 2 years ago

  • Sunyavadin #35 2 years ago

Looks like free roam and zombies packs will be the only ones on ym list.
  • Dagdriver #36 2 years ago

Too bad, love the game, but can't play online due to Rockstar's multiplayer modes incompatible with PS3 NAT3 connections. (No, changing to NAT2 not an option, and NAT3 is not a problem in my other games)
  • spiritsnake #37 2 years ago

Dawn of the Red Dead seeking Redemption!
  • spiritsnake #38 2 years ago

hey mikki how do you do those tags anyway?
  • spiritsnake #39 2 years ago

    @dagdriver
i have NAT type 2 but im still having probs finding people online in this game.and when i finally do after a very long time, its just in the hardcore free roam,i never find people in any of the other game modes, and the people in hardcore free roam just dont wana play any other match type. if u want a buddy to help get those co-op trophies add me on psn.all the guys on my friend list have stopped playing this game and moved back to modern warfare 2!

  • Emmit_Assassin #41 2 years ago

Hell yeah. I don't buy DLC purely on the basis I've always thought you should get everything in the game you buy in the first place. But there was so much in RDR already, I think this may be worth it. It sounds awesome, for one thing. And they've already given us some decent free DLC. And now this new DLC sounds jam packed with great stuff. Rockstar knows how to treat its customers. Unlike EA and Activision.
  • Emmit_Assassin #42 2 years ago

By the way, EVERYTHING can be made better by adding zombies.
Big Brother is shite. Add zombies...
Eastenders + zombies = entertainment I'd watch daily.
Go on, think of something thats shit and add zombies. It works.
  • Xardan #43 2 years ago

Rockstar have joined the DLC bandwagon.
  • RelaxedMikki #44 2 years ago

    spiritsnake...

    to do italics:

< i > at the beginning (without the spaces)
< \ i > at the end (without the spaces)

if you forget the second tag then it all comes italics. Same deal with < spoiler > , < b > etc
  • Arkwright #45 2 years ago

Let's have vampires as well. More of a challenge than slow, shuffling zombies. Werewolves would be good too.
  • Madder-Max #46 2 years ago

Oh wow. how fucking original. Zombies in a console game. never seen that before. Fuck me. what a revelation.
    Edited by 1 at 08/07/10 @ 23:57
  • metalangel #47 2 years ago

You don't need fucking zombies. You zombie fans have enough games about zombies, let us have our cowboy game.
  • Madder-Max #48 2 years ago

oh wow. i've just had a fucking idea. how about a Zombie 'horde' mode where you have to defeat waves of zombies cos thats an original idea isn't it and....hang on.....zombie horses!! Fucking A. A zombie 'horse mode' wow theres an original idea.
  • Razorus #49 2 years ago

Tomahawk WIN! Online Poker WIN! ZOMBIE WIN!

EDIT: Though tbh, I would prefer fully fledged expansion packs like GTA4s. Maybe some continuing adventures of Jack Marston? Or prequel of John Marston's bandit days?

  • birritan #50 2 years ago

The multiplayer doesnt even work for me since they released the free co-op patch, I just get a connection error display, so I'll be ignoring this shit...
  • Willbow #51 2 years ago

Can't wait. Will be interesting with zombies.. Remember you don't have to download this stuff :p
  • Murton #52 2 years ago

Hmmm, not decided about this one. The best bit about the multiplayer is the free-roam/co-op, the competitive stuff isn't great and new maps and skins aren't really going to improve it that much.

Don't think I'll be paying for new free-roam or co-op challenges either, unless it's a significant amount of content anyway.

Good to see some anti-griefing measures coming in though, hopefully that'll include a fix for the kick system so that a majority is needed to kick an unwanted player and it can't be used to deny people trying to earn trophies.
  • lucky_jim #53 2 years ago

It's not original, sure, but everyone knows zombies make anything better. As do dragons. Now why hasn't anyone put zombie dragons in a game yet?

I'd still rather have GTA4-style "proper" DLC though.
  • Beano #54 2 years ago

I'm so tired of zombies in games where it doesn't fit in.
  • PYF #55 2 years ago

This all sounds fine, but I can't even get the Outlaws DLC to work properly. All I get is a looping string of loading screens when I try and get into some co-op missions, so I hope Rockstar fix this before chucking more stuff at us.

Incidentally, anyone know of a way to get into the DLC games without it borking?
  • kangarootoo #56 2 years ago

The only issues I have with online poker are,

    a) I am truly rubbish at poker
    b) I don't like losing over and over at something that I am truly rubbish at

Other than that, I think online poker is a great idea :)
  • drhickman1983 #57 2 years ago

The story in RDR is ripe for exploration, as mentioned by somebody above either Johns past exploits or Jack's future adventures would have great potential. To see the possibilites simply swept aside and ignored in favour of yet more zombies is rather sad.

Whilst I can accept that for many people the multiplayer is the draw and that those players should be catered for, for somebody like me who is fascinated more by the story of the single player these DLCs really don't offer anything paticularily interesting. Still, at least it will save me money :)
  • Slipstream #58 2 years ago

Guess I'm trading RDR in then. I'll wait for the inevitable GOTY edition.
