PS3 and PSP both get new firmware

6.2, half a dozen the other. No, wait.

Sony has updated PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable with new firmware.

PS3 gets the bump to version 3.1, introducing a little bit of Facebook integration, changes to photo viewing and friends list tweaks. We wrote some more about that the other day, and now the European PlayStation blog has pictures and stuff.

PSP, meanwhile, is up to version 6.2, again detailed by the Euro blog, and the principal additions are options to transfer video and photo playlists to the portable either from PC (using Media Go 1.3) or PS3.

The latest PSP firmware also introduces the Digital Comics reader, but the store to go with it doesn't launch until December, so there's not much you can do with it. When it does go live, it will do so first in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, with other regions to follow.

    Another joke of a firmware update, full of shit noone wants and devoid of the stuff most asked for ! Cross gaming chat my arse !

    Another new feature:

    A slightly less attractive cross symbol (the new extras category) for the comic book reader (and TV streaming in some countries) in the middle of the XMB.

    Despite the service not being scheduled for launch in Portugal yet, I downloaded the english version of the reader.

    I see theres still no way to adjust the font size...?

    Lost the iPlayer icon? Then use the browser to go to the iPlayer. It was only ever a web-link anyway! I'd been streaming using the iPlayer on the PS3 for months so I was a little irritated to have to scroll past it every time I wanted to watch my own videos.

    Eugh Facebook... why the hell would I want that on my PS3?
  • Scimac #8 2 years ago

    Lol, I finally upgraded to 3.01 just yesterday.
  • SeesThroughAll #9 2 years ago

    My word, that cross next to system really looks ugly.

    I hope they change that icon soon...

    I think I'll leave updating my PSP until there's an update that matters. Would still rather see them giving more attention to the PSN store.
  • Skurmedel #11 2 years ago

    Photo-view looks rather nice, shame it can't display RAW-formats :)

    "Eugh Facebook... why the hell would I want that on my PS3?"

    I never even wanted it on my PC.

    The 'psncomics' twitterer(twatter? =)) mentions something about some free comics being available before the store goes live. Vouchers, or something? Not sure how its gonna operate with no actual live store but worth keeping an eye on I suppose.

    When is Sony going to release a firmware which actually upscales SD content on Blu-rays? The upscaler option specifically mentions BD as well as DVD. It must be part of their plan. So when will they actually do it?

    I'm waiting for divX support on the psp.
    Oh and full screen gaming when the psp is connected to a tv.

    Divx support will be awesome for PSP, but I dont see it happening.

    I'm disappointed that Sony haven't fixed the font size and allowed PS3 owners to choose between the old size (which I preferred) and the new one (which I dislike because it's too big and, thus, looks uglier). I know it's only a user-interface but the PS3's XMB has become more pleasingly customisable over time (more so than the Xbox 360, in fact), including adding animated themes, but forcing a larger font size on everyone instead of it being an option seems like a step backwards to me. Oh well. As long it works.

    I downloaded this before I left this morning. Couldn't see the facebook thingy or any options to enable it.

    On Darren's mention of themes, I'd like a preview mode for themes. Don't want to spend money on a theme to find it's a bit crap.

    Hope this doesn't fuck shit up like it has before, remember 3.00 with it's Uncharted "benefits", and the wonderful 2.40 with it's magical ability to "brick" PS3's? Those were the days, eh?
  • M_of_the_sys #20 2 years ago

    @cianchristopher

    Are you gonna say that about every firmware updates from now until the end of time?

    "I hope firmware update 50.1 doesn't eff things up! Remember when 3.00 broke Uncharted? Wah wah wah wah!"
  • SeesThroughAll #21 2 years ago

    Oh, don't mind him, he probably got an E74...
  • FladgeMangle #22 2 years ago

    I've also lost my TV and iPlayer icons.

    Restarted the PS3 and they didn't come back. There's no sign of facebook on the XMB either.

    WTF just happened? Did I somehow *magically* roll back to 2.8?

    I am running 3.01 and says have latest.. Am in UK am i missing something :(
  • Darren #24 2 years ago

    I don't know much about it as I'd never even heard of it until recently but does anyone actually use Facebook?

    Judging by the comments and positive feedback for those comments, I'm guessing it isn't terrifically popular. So why are Sony adding it to the PS3... is it because Microsoft added it the Xbox 360?
  • Bigglesworth #25 2 years ago

    @Darren

    Seriously? You never heard of it?

    Roughly 300 million active users (details). No one cool uses it though, obviously.
  • M_of_the_sys #26 2 years ago

    @Darren

    Facebook has millions of active users hence why both platforms are integrating this into their systems.
    Most complaints are because there are other features that gamers (or people on this site at least) would like instead of facebook integration and colour changing of XMB stuff.
    We are but a small percentage of PS3 and 360 owners though and I'm sure these features will still appeal to a lot of people.

    Is this one mandatory or optional like 3.01? To be honest i'm a bit scared of upgrading after the wave of people reporting that their BD drives got fried or something after 3.0 or 3.01! I have 3.0 and everything has been running smoothly so far though! I'm not so excited about the changes in this one cause i don't have any media files on the PS3 (that's what PCs and Ipods are for last time i checked) nor do i want to spam everyone on my Facebook friend list everytime i get a trophy! Sony should have one version of the firmware as the basic one and let you access the PSN and multiplayer as long as you have it, and make all these versions that add non essential or just cosmetic changes optional!
  • no_way! #29 2 years ago

    For those who're missing the tv icon/iplayer link: try setting "Display What's New" to "on" in system settings if you have it off. then restart.
  • prettyboytim #30 2 years ago

    Looking forward to the comics reader!
