Original Banjo heading to XBLA News

Xbox 360 News by Tom Bramwell

14 July, 2008

Microsoft plans to bring the original Banjo-Kazooie to Xbox Live Arcade.

Originally released on N64, Banjo was one of the properties Microsoft picked up when it bought Rare, and the XBLA version will be released this year to support new Xbox 360 title Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. No word on a price yet.

Nuts & Bolts will also activate additional features in the XBLA re-release thanks to an element called "Stop 'N' Swop" through which "players' accomplishments in the new game will be rewarded with extra content and features in the Xbox Live Arcade game".

Stop 'N' Swop was originally intended to allow for cross-over with N64 follow-up Banjo-Tooie but was never fully realised.

The N64 Banjo was an expansive platform game in which Banjo explored Mario 64-style worlds morphing into different creatures to complete levels and collecting jigsaw pieces, which worked in a similar way to Mario 64's stars.

Look out for a big old hands-on with Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts later this week as we report live from the industry's annual festival of cramp and sunburn, the E3 Media & Business Summit.

it would be awesome if it was given the conker xbox treatment, but a slightly shinier original is fine too

They don't make em like this anymore. I take it the XBLA version will have slightly improved graphics & HD? I'll play this through with mii 7yr old daughter, time for her to play a proper platform game. Maybe one day they'll release Banjo-Tooie on XBLA, i never got chance to play it on the N64, there seemed to be a shortage when it was released towards the end of the N64s life, i found a second hand copy a year or two after release but they wanted about £70 for it! DK Country would be great too.

Erm, it was given the XBox treatment and it is backwards compatible.

He meant it would be nice if Banjo was brought up to the graphical level that the Conker Xbox remake was. I wouldn't expect that but it sounds like it'll be nice and tarted up and high res'd all the same.

Banjo-Tooie had widescreen support on the N64, a rarity for games of that time but Rare were always one step ahead of the crowd, even including surround sound support in their games too. Hopefully the 360 remake of Banjo-Kazooie will also include widescreen support - it should be easy to do considering the game is 3D with 2D overlays for the HUD and pause menu.

Hmmm... it would appear you are getting confused!

Let me rank those *correctly* for you...

1) Pefect Dark
2) Goldeneye
3) Banjo-Kazooie
4) Jet Force Gemini
5) Blast Corps 64
6) Conker
99) Killer Instinct

;)

brilliant news, if they get Banjo-Tooie on there as well that would be great.

Now just Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and Jet Force Gemini and that'll be perfect!

@Junglist95

if you're talking about XBLA, DK Country ain't gonna happen. Even though rare made it, it's a nintendo IP (unlike B + K which is solely rare). Bit like bungie and halo, microsoft can do what they want with it now...

+1 for Banjo Tooie though, great game, was expensive to get at the time though :S

Sod Banjo-Kazooie. It was nothing but a poor pretender to Mario 64's crown.

Now if Rare announced a proper follow up to Blast Corps, and announced that it was being developed by a different company who haven't cocked up all their franchises (not to mention other companies franchises, I haven't forgotten that abortion of a Starfox game Rare made) then I'd be interested.

I wonder if it's emulated or new code and if Nintendo have any rights over the technical aspects.

The Stop N' Swap was a real slap in the face to fans. They wouldn't even announce that it wasn't enabled even after Banjo Tooie came out. There were fan's searching for the feature 'hidden' in the game for months. Still, Banjo Kazooie is one of my favourite games of all time. I dunno why. I just loved it. I'll be getting this when it's released.

TR421:

The Banjo Kazooie intellectual properties were part of the Microsoft - Nintendo deal. I'm pretty sure that it will be a new (but very simple) engine that uses the old game resources and maybe runs in a higher native high resolution.

@ gingerlink, i had a moment of stupidity there, forgot DK was a Nintendo property (probably cause Rare have done so many DK games)
