Number 5 appears on Kojima teaser site News

PC PlayStation 2 Xbox PSOne PSP DS Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii
News by Ellie Gibson

18 May, 2009

Another clue to Kojima Productions' next project has appeared on the company's teaser site.

As reported last week, the site features an empty field, a cloudy sky and a countdown clock. Now an extra element has appeared - a flickering grey number 5. Or is it a letter S?

Perhaps we'll find out more when that countdown clock ticks over. But a full reveal could be planned for E3, so roll on June.

It's probably a red herring. I think Konami are trying to mislead us by feeding us teasers like the metatag, and the 5 in the background of that countdown page. Eventually, it's probably not MGS5.

Too obvious. I'm betting that's a letter. So... revised MGS4 with an S subtitle , perhaps?

Or maybe a new Snatcher.

/looks at above statement

Pardon me, my wet dreams are showing. No way in hell that'll happen. The landscape has nothing to do with anything I remember from Kojima, but for all we know it's just there for novelty's sake.

fjharps has got it. MGS4:Substance is looking the most likely.

Perhaps it will come with the long awaited trophy patch too.

I took apart the flash files, nothing interesting unfortunately, they've not uploaded the swf that it'll display when the timer runs out. Not sure what the initials 'EAE' means tho which crop up quite a bit, and they seem to have the ability to have 5 different count downs, so no idea if it's a staggered info release.

whatever it is, it's likely that "weather" will be a featured mechanic, given the different loading bar icons and the changing weather in the teaser site. If there's one thing kojima does very well it's give a sense of the weather. MGS2 tanker section still makes me feel cold and wet, and the whole atmos in the jungle for 3 was superb.

I'm guessing (wild stabs in the dark) the "5" is a second countdown. In 3 days a "4" will appear, the weather in the scene will change and the clock will display 90 hours again. This will repeat with the background changing every 90 hours right up until E3 (which is around 20 days away - 5x90 hours-ish). Then whatever it is will be revealed.

/Prays for new IP.

it would really be funny if it ended up being MGS 5. what, with kojima sistematically announcing "this will be the last SOLID title in the series" and "I won't be working on any metal gear anymore" each time.

Any idiot looking at the source code for the page would see in black & white:

"Hideo Kojima, MGS,METAL GEAR, NEXT, game, konami, kojima game, KJP, Kojima Production "

It's MGS5, end off.

It's a shame that Hideo just can't let go of MGS. I love the series (though I still haven't been able to fit number 4 in my play schedule) but at some point it's enough. He's shown in the past that he can come up with creative and quality games outside the MGS series (e.g. Boktai, ZoE), I wish he would try to do so again.

But I guess the millstone of the HD consoles' development cost doesn't allow him to pursue fresh ideas.

New version of Boktai. You have to go outside and get struck by lightning IN REAL LIFE to charge your weaponry.

Sounds like a fun game :)

How on earth does that prove anything? It's a set of meta tags so when folks enter "next Kojima game" or "next mgs" in an appropriate search engine, hopefully that site will come back! If I'd released a series of multimillion selling games and had built a studio around them I'd also try and generate hits. Just as the nobi nobi boy, site most likely has meta tags that reference katamari damacy.

If that was the case then this is an incorrect use of meta tags and threfore the fault of Konami for using them on the wrong pages. However the context on which they are put would suggest otherwise.

To expand, the added 'Thunder & Lightning' is a subtle suggestion that the game will be about
Raiden. Raiden is a god of thunder and lightning in Japanese mythology.

I'm only showing what I found after 10 seconds of investigation.

Let's wait and see what actually happens.

PS: As for nobi nobi boy - perhaps you can check and let us all know. Just have a look at your ironed on shirt, pants or socks tags, should say it all - :-)

If it is MGS5 and the setting is at all like the background image, I'm ecstatic. Snake Eater's outdoor setting was a huge part of what made it easily the best in the series, so another outdoor game would be great. I'm not counting on it though. Not long to wait, anyway.

If it's a sequel to something and not a new original project, I'd assume it's an S for Snatcher rather than a 5 for Metal Gear Solid 5. Surely he's not going to announce a new Metal Gear so soon after the release of the last one as well as just months from him saying he's finished with the Metal Gear series. It'd just mean he plain out-right lied (or he was oblivious to its production, in which case he can hardly call it his project).

they used the font on purpose because it's the same font that's been used by all konami promotional material for metal gear solid since mgs2. it's a 5, it's going to be mgs5, and i like the idea that the lightning = raiden foreshadowing.

cough cough! (so I'm slightly wrong on my timings and the fact the 5/S didn't turn into a 4, but instead an e, 3 and 5/S).

Also jambo74. How is it the incorrect use of meta tags? Konami/KJP clearly want to generate interest with this site and get folks talking about it. If you've ever played/looked at any of the marketing for any MGS games you'd surely have picked up on the fact that Kojima likes to trick players. Could be MGS5, could be MGS4:S, could be something completely different. Suggesting you know for sure, and calling anyone who questions this an 'idiot' is quite antagonising.
