NFS World closed beta begins

Game to launch this summer.

EA has announced that the closed PC beta for Need for Speed World has begun and that people can sign up to claim one of the limited number of available slots at world.needforspeed.com.

NFS World allows players to race against one another in a persistent online world, and spend the fruits of their racing labours on performance upgrades and new vehicles. There's also a range of power-ups to master.

The game is free to play on PC and will be supported by micro-transactions for additional paid content.

Check out our Need for Speed World hands-on preview, published today, or our screenshot gallery for more.

Free to play NFS? Hadn't heard about this.

Not my cup of tea, but very interesting nonetheless.

Who is willing to bet against that this will end up like BF: Heroes? Good start, and a stupid decision later, makes the subscriber stupendously more powerful.

Hadn't heard about this game at all, it definitely sounds interesting.

I think micro-transactions could be a great way to support an online game like this, but they have to be very careful. The content needs to be good enough to make players want it, but not so unbalanced that the only way to win races is to buy more and more content.

Or if it is unbalanced allow some sort of tightwad server, where people who don't feel the need to pay extra to win at games can play without interruption.

Or count it like the le mans tracks on Grid, count people who do micro transactions and people who don't separately, so you can still come first in your class even if you come fourth, that way allowing people who choose not to sink money into the game a chance to avoid grinding rep just because someone is raping them in a Bugatti.

To be honest I'm not looking forward to it that much if they do to it what they did to bf heroes. They will almost certainly put the equivalent of bf heores uber weapons in at some point and ruin the game so they can make a few extra bucks so people with no skill can buy their way to success.

I am amazed that this runs on my low powered Laptop, but it fly's which was a nice surprise, as most PC games run jerky on my Hardware, even NFS Underground, runs ok, but i have to lower the resolution to its lowest to cope, but it ran nowhere as well as this does.
I love the Cop chases, annoying when you hit a road block at the wrong place, and it stops you suddenly.
