XBL Arcade titles every week? News

Xbox 360 News by Tom Bramwell

26 July, 2006

Microsoft wants to deliver a new game to Xbox Live Arcade every week - and believes it's possible, too.

"I can say we've certainly put enough games into the pipeline and it's certainly our target," Xbox Live Arcade worldwide games portfolio manager Ross Erickson told gaming blog Joystiq this week.

"I'm glad [Xbox Live Arcade] Wednesdays have kicked off. Barring unforeseen development issues from the developers themselves - our issue was to fill the pipeline with a lot of titles on the upfront because of the inevitable schedule delays we'll have - we'll still have enough queued up in our certification process we'll always be able to have something coming out once a week."

Microsoft has previously said it aims to have 160 games available for Xbox 360 by Christmas, and a significant number of those are likely to appear on Xbox Live Arcade - as many as 30 by the end of autumn.

"We certainly have enough games in the pipeline - more than enough, in fact - to achieve that goal on a weekly basis," Erickson told Joystiq.

One thing Microsoft won't be doing - at least not immediately - is allowing developers to make games that occupy more than 50MB of hard disk or memory-card space. "That's pillar number one," according to Erickson.

The idea is to allow Xbox 360 owners who do not own hard disks to store downloaded Live Arcade games on memory units, which allow for 64MB of data.

However, with PlayStation 3 in particular likely to allow for much larger downloadable games, Microsoft runs the risk of losing out on bigger releases despite the impressive momentum Live Arcade has already built up.

Erickson admits that the company is already considering the possibilities of larger memory units, but there's no word on hard-disk-only Live Arcade games or other digitally distributed titles - although it's important to note that the latter, which Microsoft is certainly considering, would fall outside his remit.

"Certainly those memory units are not available yet. And when they become available we'll re-evaluate," he says of Live Arcade's position.

"We're constantly evaluating this not on just the size of the memory unit available, but in terms of what the quality bar is that we're asking for from developers."

"At this time and for the foreseeable future we're sticking to our position that 50MBs is what defines an Arcade title so that portability between system and system can work and so that those users who do not have a hard drive, don't think there's many of them, but for those that don't have a storage solution for getting their games onto their system."

The Xbox Live Arcade Wednesdays schedule consists of Frogger, Cloning Clyde and Galaga (the latter released worldwide today), along with Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting (August 2) and Pac-Man (August 9).

Other games on the horizon include Texas Hold 'Em Poker, Sonic the Hedgehog from SEGA, Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers from The Behemoth and various others from the likes of Midway, Namco, Capcom and Microsoft's independent publishing and development partners.

Live Arcade games typically go on sale for 400 or 800 Microsoft points (GBP 3.40 / 6.80), although some - notably Bankshot Billiards - cost 1200 points (GBP 10.20). Free demo versions are available for all of them.

At least it is encouraging dicipline on the part of developers. Alien Hominid is set to now use a vector-based storage system which will convert the images to sprites on the fly, in order to meet 50Mb. Other games are using proceedural generation in order to meet the limits. Research into these technologies in XBLA should trickle down to full games in production, which is a good thing.

Sonic! Alien Hominid!

The HDD-less box was a brainfart to begin with. I'm certain it will be quietly forgotten by next year. Although it did have the excellent side effect that the HDD is a separate, user exchangeable component. Easy to switch to a larger one later on and you don't have to worry about your save games if the console goes for a repair/switch.

One game per week does threaten the so far good quality of the releases. One thing I'm hoping they're paying attention to is the demo experience; some titles are just annoying, notably Bankshot Billiards, which comes with a ridiculous time limit.

Mine's full anyway!

MS know thay will have 160 games out by Christmas - that number is way to random to be random. They have probably known for 6 months how many games they can expect to see on the platform by this Christmas.

I can see the 50MB limit falling soon, but I personally thing developing in this kind or environment forces you to focus on gameplay rather than graphics when deciding where to devote man hours. Most all XBLA games I'm played have all had good controls and accesibility, and I think this has a root somewhere in the fact that the developers didn't feel the need to make the flashy graphics and such - due to the media size limit.

We'll see how SF2 turns out theough - the 360's D-pad is damn awful.

This is a pretty exciting announcement, if they stick to it.

I pretty much exclusively buy Arcade games for my 360 now, given the drought of decent boxed games it fills the gap nicely, keeping the 360 my platform of choice. The low cost doesn't hurt either.

I would like the opportunity to buy more original content though, Arcade conversions can only keep my interest so long.

And as Yorkiebar says, bring on those old Ultimate Play The Game games. I would sell at least a finger to be able to play Jet Pac, Atic Atac, Alien 8, Cookie, Psst and the like again on a TV without the ten minute load times :D

Throwing away the concept of small, fun games for a low price. I know another platform that tried the same and didn't do to well with that concept.

Mind you, if they do give us the old Ultimate games, it'd be nice to get unlimited life options too. Those games were rock hard! How did we ever cope without POKE 58423?

Just how do you POKE a 360?

I second that Xerx3s. Thing is, with the Wii and the DS, Nintendo are basically giving devs a limit in terms what they can do graphically so they concentrate on making some crazy gameplay stuff instead. I see the same approach here, what with games being small you can't just make the prettiest and biggest XBLA game to cash in, you'll actually have to come up with something worthwhile.

Neccessity is the mother of invention, or some such.

For those people who believe this then how come you don't say the same about Nintendo's Wii. It's going to have a load of downloadable content with no HDD to store it. At least with the Xbox360 you have a choice.

The choice is the problem. The biggest objection is the fragmentation of the platform. Developers have to cater for both versions of the 360. It is frustrating for developers of 360 Live Arcade titles to be limited due the rather fanciful notion that core system owners are using Live Arcade by juggling their saved games with 64mb memory units.

In the case of the Wii, there's only one version of the console, and IIRC it comes with a certain amount of inbuilt solid state storage (correct me if I am wrong).

Just as for some games you needed certain peripheral/add-on, I predict that for some future xbox titles you will have a label on the front that proclaims "hard-drive only" or similar.
There'll be a system-selling game that requires it - just you wait!

Devil May Cry 4 is coming to the Xbox 360 and NOT the Playstation 3!!!

In the May 18, 2006 issue of Famitsu magazine, the Devil May Cry producer Hiroshi Kobayashi revealed that plans had changed drastically for Devil May Cry 4! He said that Devil May Cry 4 will now be released for the Xbox 360 and the Wii, but NOT the Playstation 3!

Let's just get one thing straight to all of the people who search for Internet information: When you see an article that says, "Update: Kobayashi has confirmed that Devil May Cry 4 is being released exclusively for the Playstation 3," it was from January 20, 2006! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that May 18th, 2006 is a later point in time! This means that as of right now we have received absolute confirmation that Devil May Cry 4 will be released for the Xbox 360 and the Wii, but not the PS3!

Devil May Cry 4 was nowhere to be seen for the Playstation 3 at the 2006 E3, and its lack of development is the reason why. Kobayashi has said that the Xbox 360 version of the game will be just as good if not better than the PS3 trailer shown at the 2005 E3. In the interview, Kobayashi explains that he is not sure about the power of the Playstation 3, but he makes it clear that Devil May Cry 4 on the Xbox 360 will fully maintain all of the expected quality for the game!

THIS IS AWESOME!!! And it needs to be covered publicly MORE!!!

Here are recent May 18, 2006 hyperlinks to prove this:

I doubt any serious x360/XBLA gamer is still using an HDD-less system; the price of getting two memory cards (one for your saves and one for Arcade titles) plus the annoyance of downloading the Arcade game to your memory card over and over again each time you want to play -which could well apply to Wii as well- is just not worth it.

I will, however, agree with those wishing the HDD-less system never existed, just to avoid fragmentation (as Kiigan stated).
