3D gaming comes to the PSP

Via MG Acid 2's crazy binoculars.

Last week, you may recall, we ran a story about Metal Gear Acid 2 at this year's Tokyo Game Show, and the big surprise Konami had in store involving something called "Solid Eye".

Well, Famitsu magazine has gone and revealed that Solid Eye is in fact a brand new peripheral for the PSP that comes bundled with MGA2 and will let you view parts of the game in - wait for it - 3D!

And no, it's not a pair of cardboard glasses with red and blue plastic lenses. It looks like a pair of binoculars, apparently, and it's designed to co-ordinate nicely with your shiny new handheld.

The game's director, Shinta Nojiri, told Famitsu there's an all-new storyline where Snake has to infiltrate a military faction. And wouldn't you know it, he only goes and discovers that there's a new Metal Gear. New characters will include a lady called Venus, who has lovely blonde hair and wears red.

You'll be able to battle other players wirelessly, and just like in the single player game, each opponent will control two characters.

We don't quite see what the attraction of being able to watch turn-based card battles in 3D is, to be honest, but we'll reserve judgement till Konami's official unveiling at the Tokyo Games Show this week - so stay tuned.

Metal Gear Acid 2 is out in the US on November 15, with a Japanese release to follow on December 8. No one seems to know or care about us lot.

It's to view Teliko's (now bouncy) breasts in proper 3D.

During the first half of MGA I swore I wouldn't give in and buy the sequel because I wasn't enjoying it at all, but during the second half of it I warmed to the whole card-battling system and now I'm looking forward to this, and the headache-inducing 3D goggles. :)

Who says Nintendo has all the stupidest ideas? :-)
  • Talha #5 7 years ago

Correction: Nintendo has stupid ideas that translate into 365 Mario games per month and manage to sell a few hundred thousand. Sony and Konami have stupid ideas that result in sales of millions.

when ninetendo sugest someting strage its revolutionary, when konami do its instantly branded stupid.

come on get over your self and embrace forward thinking from all.

Solid Eye, what a wonderful name!

A guy from work collects those stereoscopic goggles from the early 1900s, they give excellent 3D results.

    King Fanboy Talha has spoken!
  • smelly #9 7 years ago

Talha : Correction. Nintendo has stupid ideas which translate to constant yearly profits. The other 2 have stupid ideas which translate to constant losses.

Look to see which of the 3 made losses last year, and which made profit (hint : only one made a profit).

When will Konami stop fannying around with card games and get to work on a proper PSP Metal Gear? Just port Twin Snakes to it, I don't care, just git!
  • zErOb_cOOl #11 7 years ago

I think a pair of cardboard glasses with red and blue plastic lenses would be far better....straight from the 80's old school.....or Back to the Future.
  • renzo #12 7 years ago

No no, I want Sam Fisher goggles please. None of this cheap cardboard stuff.

You misunderstand me - I think Nintendo's ideas are stupid too. :-)

What happened to the other eight Tendos? :)
  • Talha #16 7 years ago

If by other two you mean MS and Sony, then here it is: Microsoft has never been known to make a loss in recent history. As for Sony, all their divisions are losing money EXCEPT FOR PLAYSTATION.

But then again, I did not expect Nintendophiles to be much into actual facts and nonsense like real-world figures... Also, since when profit margins start to matter?

By the way, King Fanboy is an honor as far as this company is concerned! Thanks!
  • Sabre #17 7 years ago

They can't port Twin Snakes to it, as Nintendo helped on the game, and they are in the credits.
  • myiagros #18 7 years ago

    i didn't misunderstand
i am just talking genaraly that if ninty do anything it is highly praised but if anyone else does something slightly different its is unacceptable.

solid eye? eh? so snake eye wasn't thought off?

wonder how this is going to work with the displays, i do remember glasses that worked with crt's and high refresh rates, not a method you could use with tft screens tho is it.
  • TimN #21 7 years ago

That high-tech eyepatch on the PS3 scans is probably a solid-eye indeed :p

"Microsoft has never been known to make a loss in recent history"

M$ lost an absolute fortune on XB1. Like a few billion dollars. But then their plan is longer term that one or two console generations. Online IDs are where the money is.

Edit: Of course overall they didn't lose out. But XB was being subsidised by the cash cows like Office.

Hey, didn't Nintendo already use this stupid idea - the VirtualBoy?

kangarootoo : I absolutely agree. But I have three points: 1) Since when profit margins start to matter (2) Does that change the fact that XBox has a far larger installed base than GC (3) For us consumers, if MS is still making a loss on every XBox, is that a bad thing?

"Metal Gear Acid 2 is out in the US on November 15".

    Really, that soon?

Looks like I'll be scrounging for food in a dumpster after this holiday (or should I say gaming) season again!!

Does anyone else think the Solid Eye makes your PSP look like a ViewMaster? Because that was the first thing I thought of when I saw the pictures...
  • prettyboytim #29 7 years ago

Aha! A binoculars-sized peripheral! The perfect thing for a handheld console...
  • Sko #30 7 years ago

"i am just talking genaraly that if ninty do anything it is highly praised but if anyone else does something slightly different its is unacceptable."
What bizarro world are you living in, mate. Ninty get a kicking for pretty much any announcement they make. Stop trying to pull the victim card. It's Ninty's and it's got a bloody pokemon printed on the other side.
  • ProfessorLesser #31 7 years ago

+1 to Sko - I've yet to see anyone call Nintendo's more outlandish ideas revolutionary. The only revolutionary things they've done are things we now take for granted. That's what a revolution is.

Now can we do without the Nintendo bashing, please?

I like the MGA card system, once you get into it, it can be quite challenging.

The way I see this working is kind of like a 3d chess board, so many moves to make in a multi story building for example.

I reckon the new characters will lead us into the MGS4 universe.

I'm glad they are sticking with the cards, it means you can put the game down and pick it up again.
