Eternal Darkness sequels?

That was the plan, says Dyack.

Silicon Knights' Denis Dyack says the company "absolutely" has sequels planned for GameCube title Eternal Darkness.

In a blog update about the process of "creating universes", Dyack begins provocatively: "I am most often asked if we have sequels in mind for Eternal Darkness. The answer is absolutely yes."

That's because Eternal Darkness was "just one story we had in mind for the Eternal Darkness universe". Apparently "there are even more manipulations, great ancients, and numerous other stories to tell".

Sadly we don't know when we're going to hear them, though, because Dyack immediately segues into what he actually wants to talk about - the relevance of this approach to the Too Human Xbox 360 trilogy.

"We believe that an important part of making a trilogy successful is that each of its parts is self contained. Because we want each game to be a complete experience on its own, the major plot lines will be resolved at the end of each game."

So don't hold your breath, ED fans - and certainly don't expect more GameCube instalments, obviously - but there's still hope. Unless of course this is one of those times when Eternal Darkness tricks you into thinking something's happening when it's not, in which case we're off to inventorise our memory card before something bad happens.

My family used to have a boat named Dyack.......................................................
  • space_ace #3 6 years ago

well it's eternal, isn't it. sequels non stop!
  • gizmo #4 6 years ago

I thought the first one was dull. Only played it for about 2-3 hours though, as with all my other cube games :(
  • manic_mouse #5 6 years ago

Great game that was a little different than the norm. It was really underrated and I'll deffinitely be purchasing the sequel if and when it comes out.

Not overly impressed with Too Human thus far though, seems a little too God of War like and nowhere near as cool.
  • manic_mouse #6 6 years ago

"I thought the first one was dull."

Just because it didnt' have huge explosions, real time weapon change, giant crabs with weak underbellies for massive damage and bullet time doesn't make it "dull". The story was highly interesting.

Loved the first one and it remains a favourite around these parts......

    ....apart from the screaming babies in the rear speakers. Ugh. {shudder}
  • groovychainsaw #8 6 years ago

Was probably the best game i played on the 'cube (mainly because i got resident evil 4 on the PS2, but still)....
  • Schiraman #9 6 years ago

Eternal Darkness was probably my favorite GC game, although it was much too easy which spoiled it a little. I'd definitely be interested in a sequel, especially if it had a choice of difficulty levels... :)
  • smelly #10 6 years ago

    @manic_mouse:

dont take the bait mate. That was obviously an attempt to tell everyone that he thinks the gamecube suxors or something.

He's probably never even played it.

Ignore trolls like that, and like a bad smell (or a stalker) they'll eventually go away
  • manic_mouse #11 6 years ago

"although it was much too easy which spoiled it a little."

Unless you get to the final boss and don't have the magical weapon required to kill him. Which makes him impossible to beat... :(
  • smelly #12 6 years ago

I got to the final boss, almost beat him, but died. So had to try again, then realised that i had to sit through the stupidly long unskippable cutscene again, died tried again. Sat throught the stupidly long unskipable cutscene again, died.

. Gave up, never played again

WHY ON EARTH PUT AN UNSKIPPABLE CUTSCENE BEFORE AN END BOSS, BUT AFTER THE SAVE POINT?

    gits.

I really didn't understand people's adoration of this game. I found it very easy because I seem to remember you could top up your sanity meter pretty much whenever you liked. Hence, I think I missed out on any craziness the game might throw at me. Which... is a pretty huge flaw in my book.

Put this together with incredibly boring combat - Ooo another skeleton, I'll chop off his head, aswell - and it became a very tiresome experience.

***DISCLAIMER - I am not attempting to troll, any resemblences to that are coincidentendal and should be viewed in such a way. I hold no responsibility for any fanboys I may enrage.

    Wii-mote spell casting?
  • dcangel #15 6 years ago

Not wanting to troll, but I also found ED rather dull. I don't doubt that the story is good, though I probably didn't get far enough for it to really get going, but I found the core gameplay somewhat tedious and unrewarding.

Bizarrely, I also found it rather difficult, which seems to go against the norm. I'm not very good at these newfangled three-dee games. :D

    loved, loved, loved this game.

A next gen sequel would be spiffing indeed.
  • smelly #17 6 years ago

Hey saying you dont like a game, isnt trolling.

Saying something like "I didnt like the game, its like all other gamecube games - rubbish", that's trolling.

    big difference.

If I said "I think halo is overrated" (and I do), that's fine. If I said "I think halo is rubbish, just like ALL xbox games, the xbox is rubbish".. then that's trolling.

    See?

I loved Eternal Darkness, specially that bit in the cathedral with all the corpses lying around and... errm... oh ok
  • themajor #19 6 years ago

Rather jolly I thought. An excellent game with an intriguingly well-developed storyline and rollicking runecasting system. A sequel would be splendid thank-you!
  • pretence #20 6 years ago

@ Tomo... Sounds like on your first run through the game you picked the green Statue which can be used directly to increase your Sanity... Blue was for Magic, Red for Stamina... Which one you picked has a direct impact on how you can play the game...

I loved it... Oozed atmosphere and interesting story line
  • AcidSnake #21 6 years ago

Magic weapon to defeat the end boss?
    There wasn't a requirement...
Sure, you could get the enchanted gladius...making it easier, but it was always possible...

Anyway, great game filled with little touches to make it stand out...
Like the hissing voice when you cast a 'mantorok' spell...

I absolutely welcome a sequel, but for what platform?...
Aren't silicon knights under the microsoft banner?
  • manic_mouse #22 6 years ago

    "There wasn't a requirement...
Sure, you could get the enchanted gladius...making it easier, but it was always possible... "

Man I tried so many times to kill that guy. SO MANY! It really wasn't happening for me. It's not that I wasn't good at the game either, because I found it fairly easy going up until that point.
  • AcidSnake #23 6 years ago

Simply enchant your gladius (or find the aforementioned 'enchanted gladius')
Run away and raise your shield...the floating orbs, not the forcefield kind...
And hack away at the bugger...
Then hack at the floating symbol...repeat until dead...

I usually cast the spell which continues to top up your health as well...

    urrrmmm...don't remember...summon, room, chatturgha...and pargon pargon etc...
    Pool magick I believe...
  • Kami #24 6 years ago

I thin Eternal Darkness was a very refreshing take on horror, very heavy on the story...

    Would absolutely LOVE a sequel.
  • AcidSnake #25 6 years ago

IMO the game didn't sell so good because it was up against the well known and graphically waaaaay superior Resident Evil...

ED had some cardboard backgrounds that were inexcusable...
The balcony overlooking the city of en'gha anyone?...

But a very enjoyable game nonetheless...
  • smelly #26 6 years ago

(memory may be wrong here) .. Wasnt it originally an n64 game, then got converted and souped up for the cube?

if so, that explains the not great, but still okay gfx.
  • manic_mouse #27 6 years ago

    @Acid

Thanks for the tips, I may dig it up at some point this week and have another crack at him.

The graphics in ED were never that great, but the game started out on the N64 and was then ported over to the GC which may go some way to explaining it. I'm sure the sequel will be Unreal Engine 3 powered and should look much better.

I don't know why the game didn't sell well because personally I think it got so many things right. It was scary, had an interesting storyline, was innovative and even the combat wasn't too shabby.

EDIT: You beat me to it, Smelly! :p

    @manic_mouse
Yeah no prob...the magick pool spell in particular helps a lot...Pious might not give you enough time to make it a 7-fold circle...but a 5-fold circle should be enough for a large part of the battle...

I bought the game a long time after it was released...Bargain bin...But it absolutely gripped me...
Indeed some of the graphics are still N64-ish but it remains a wonderful experience...
Besides that, you should really finish the game with the three alignments...just for completion...
Also it's a nice case of 'recognise the voice actor'...
Say hello to David Hayter for instance...(Solid Snake)
    Also Liquids voice is around...
And the guy who played the shrink in the terminator movies...
  • penhalion #29 6 years ago

What happens if you complete all three alighnments?

I got the purple magic (the one that cancels all others and makes you invisible). Played through twice but, apart from the odd creature alighment change and those head hackers changing what else happens?
  • TheBard #30 6 years ago

    SPOILER

@penhalion: When you complete the game for each color, you get a different ending. Mantorok has influenced the events in three different dimensions, where each of the three Greater Beings were defeated. Being multidimensional in nature, Mantorok has now bound each of the other and annihilates them awakens from death and rules surpreme.
  • captain-future #31 6 years ago

PLEASE!!!! this was one of the finest gamecube titles (and one of the best titles of the current generation!)
  • AcidSnake #32 6 years ago

    TheBard has said it...

In essence it gives you an additional final movie...
    Nothing that special...
But nice to see that Mantorok is the ultimate bad*ss...

Besides that every time you finish it in order you'll unlock something...
    Level select
    Infinite health, magic, sanity...
  • Tomo #33 6 years ago

Oh... so one little decision I thought I made turned out to make the game completely different? That's a bit of a flaw isn't it? Could potentially dampen 1/3 of your games audience with that!

/grumbles and wishes he had experienced the "proper" experience
  • AcidSnake #34 6 years ago

What decision are you talking about?
No, nothing changes throughout...it'll be the same game 3 times in a row...only difference lies in the enemies who are slightly different and the black guardian which is completely different...

But by finishing it three times on the same save file you can unlock a final video...

I wish I could have read that article, but there was a sodding great advert obscuring the text, which re-appeared every time I tried to close it.
