Ubi's new Revolution title

Get ready for Red Steel.

Ubisoft is currently working on a Revolution game titled Red Steel, according to the latest issue of US magazine Game Informer.

The game is in development at Ubisoft Paris, and is being worked on by team members whose previous credits include Prince of Persia, Far Cry Instincts and Ghost Recon.

Red Steel appears to be a first-person shooter that utitilises the Revolution's remote controller. You'll use it to aim your gun, and also to control your secondary weapon - a katana.

According to our old friend Internet Reports, you play an American gentleman who's engaged to a lady called Miyu. After she is kidnapped, you discover that her Dad, Sato, is a Yakuza boss who owns a mysterious ceremonial katana - and rival mobsters are after it. They offer to return Miyu in exchange for the sword, but Sato's having none of it - he gives the katana to you instead and tells you to find his daughter.

Apparently you'll be able to use it to pull off single-move stealth kills, and to fight in epic duels with Miyu's kidnappers. You can also use your gun to, for example, blast weapons out of enemies' hands, and occasionally spare their lives in exchange for new weapons or shortcuts.

That's all there is to know at present - more will be revealed in the next few weeks.

    well, there's also this: http://gonintendo.com/?p=1958
and quite a few screenshots too.

A katana eh..its Daikatana again isnt it.

Admittedly there's a bit of a debate over whether they'll really be that good when the game is released. A Ubisoft representative backs up the claim that they're not concept art and such, but Felafelkid says that they're 'tentative' screenshots, and may change.

Eurogamer also forgot to mention that it's a launch title, if my memory serves me well.

only console i'm gonna get, so it better be good, and much better than the previous two nintendo consoles. wonder what the control will be like: if you'd realy be able to move the camera with the remote, or if you have to that with the controlstick/pad and with your remote only point on the exact location of the screen where you want to shoot. the latter wouldn't be much of a revolution after all.
  • gerg #11 6 years ago

    Why don't people read?

From the first article I linked to:

-Unlike other FPS games, which tie the camera and aiming together, Red Steel’s camera follows your aim with a slight delay. If, for example, you point to the edge of the screen, the camera will turn to re-center on your view after a second. With the sensitivity of the controller, a standard FPS control would move too much, potentially making the player feel ill
-Most console FPS games limit their enemies to horizontal planes to prevent player frustration, but targets on a verticle plane are just as easy to hit with the Revolution controller
-You can aim at a target as quickly as you can move your hand
-While you can quickly shoot enemies anywhere on screen, Red Steel never feels in a light-gun game - this is a true FPS, one that feels like it has drawn from the best of both the PC and console shooter worlds
-According to lead game designer Oriola, it takes roughly three seconds to turn completely around around in most console shooters, while it takes about one-quarter second in a PC game. In Red Stel, it takes one second
-GI: we found Red Steel most enjoyable to play while standing up

... well that's what Game Informer thinks.

Honestly, the game seems to be very different from the previously available console FPSs.

IMHO the rev controller has potential to be BETTER than the old keyboard and mouse scenario for shooters because:

    a) it sounds more accuarate/intuitive than a mouse
    b) the movement on the left stick is analogue compared to keyboards digital.

But we'll wait and see. Could be the perfect machine for fps's (dual analog has always sucked for it).

Admittedly there's a bit of a debate over whether they'll really be that good when the game is released

What like the ps3 "in game" screenshots ;-)

dont believe any in game shots you see until e3 (on either platform).

    @fiery_jackass : LOL.

Although I did find the "The 'Download Older Games' service will make the Revolution worth owning... " Bit amusing.

    1. Wasnt that the reason most people gave for chipping their xbox's?
    2. Why exactly is live arcade so popular again?

I also find it funny in that he desperately goes on about fanboys and how they slag off other consoles... But yet his entire article is predominantely "nintendo are the suxors, ps3 and 360 roxors", wihtout knowing f-all about the system.

So In summary: VERY humerous ironic website that. A fanboy slagging off people for being fanboys

I really don't think that this was the point of the article at all, but hey! I'm a PWoT fanboy
  • smelly #15 6 years ago

    >I really don't think that this was the point of the article at all

Well he starts off fine, saying fanboyism of all systems is wrong. Which i agree with (unless you're saying you're a fan of the games made by each company, which i persoanlly think is fine, and no different to saying "i like ubisoft games", for example).

But that's how he starts off, then goes on a full blown "nintendo sucks" rant, going on (for example) of how playing retro games on it is a crap idea (but yet doesnt pick up on the fact the 360 does just that, or that most people chipped their xboxes/psps soley to play nitendo/sega games).

Etc etc. He lost all "respect" (what's the word where you lose respect for someone as they invalidate their argument?) from me then..

It's funny how any kind of news that may be the harbinger of disrupting the status quo (ie Playstation dominance) is greeted with barely concealed contempt and dismay. As well as bringing out suckers you've never heard of before on this board.

Sounds like to me, Nintendo's "revmote" has caused quite a stir. On both the pro and anti-Nintendo camps.

I don't think it's likely that Nintendo can go from 2nd/3rd place to market leader in one generation . Though I wouldn't rule it out entirely. It almost seems like in the distant past of yore, but remember both the N64 and GCN launched a full 18 MONTHS AFTER PS and PS2 respectively. That simply wont be the case with Rev. And Unlike on Hiroshi Yamauchi's watch, Nintendo under Satoru Iwata seems ready and confident.

My own view on the Revmote is that it sounds fantastic - in theory even better than a keyboard/mouse combo. Can you imagine going back to just pushing sticks after you've played games using gestures and movements?

Why not? The psone came from nowhere and wiped the arse of sega/nintendo (previous console gods)

"that most people chipped their xboxes/psps soley to play nitendo/sega games"

I think you'll find that most people chipped their consoles to play pirated games.
  • fiery_jackass #21 6 years ago

    >how playing retro games on it is a crap idea
hmm, I might be reading it wrong, but this is a bad example to pick
it's never said that playing retro games is a crap idea, it's said that you can't "possibly point to this as a saving grace for the system", which seems fair enough for me.

it is supposed to be a humorous article, and perhaps deliberately antagonistic (like the 50 reasons why LoTR sucks one that caused a bit of a rumpus)..but there are some truths in it. Personally I think Nintendo is doing the right thing with Revolution by distancing itself from the PS3/360 pissing competition.

    Red Steel? Gah!

I was hoping for Blue Steel, the Zoolander tie-in.

    Also on the other article.

Notice how he wonders how a periphial device would enhance a driving game.
    ...
Well golly me, I'll need some time to think about that, which I'll do while I'll play my racing game with a steering wheel (and possibly pedals as well).

My understanding of the Japanese market is that the only way Nintendo can regain their former market dominance (as in the S/NES days) is if they can get Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest to be developed primarily for their Revolution platform. And there's also other factors outside of Japan like GTA.

And also the fact that Sony actually grew the market with their audio/video features (first CD-ROM and then DVD-ROM and playback) far beyond what Nintendo could have achieved with their games only approach. Though I do concede that the last factor (DVD playback) has now been effectively neautrlised.

I do hope they let you choose a left-handed option of the main character, otherwise it's gonna look odd.

Wait 'til Lucasarts realises how good a SW game would be on it :)
  • The-Bodybuilder #26 6 years ago

    >"most people chipped their xboxes/psps soley to play nitendo/sega games)."

    Riiiiight.

Only a tiny, minute fraction of xbox owners chipped thier console, and out of those, the majority were to play pirated games.

And I'd love to see a 4-player split screen with this game, everyone armed with a nintenchuk n all.

  • Ace_McCloud #28 6 years ago

Brilliant; colour me brown, for I have just pooped my pants with excitement...

The immersion talk has got me really excited, can't be long now (what five years? ten tops?) before the old headset peripheral is announced and we can all play mario kart looking over our shoulders to spot incoming red shells etc. How anyone can doubt the potential of the revolution controller is beyond me.
  • smelly #29 6 years ago

    @The Bodybuilder

Whoops sorry, typo on my behalf shouldve read : "most people claimed the legitimate reason they chipped their xboxes/psps was to play nitendo/sega games)."

(that i've read on forums and the like)
  • smelly #30 6 years ago

    >How anyone can doubt the potential of the revolution controller is beyond me

Me neither, not even touched it yet, but already i can see how it can EASILY outdo the old keyboard/mouse combo for fps games.
  • #31 6 years ago

How anyone can doubt the potential of the revolution controller is beyond me

Because the games industry is populated by a vocifeorus minority of hardcore ubergeeks more interested in stat-heavy/time investment-heavy RPGs/GTAs than in new (more improved) ways to experience games?
  • smelly #32 6 years ago

Mind you, if those shots are real (but tbh, i believe them as much as i believed the killzone 2 demo), then at least it looks like the graphic capabilities are doing a fine job.

  • smoison #33 6 years ago

This looks sweet. It shoudld be an awesome launch title..

    Can't wait.

And if peopel are expecting Xbox1 level graphics for the REV, I pitty da fool.
  • #34 6 years ago

I care about as much for Rev's graphical abilities as I do about Metroid Prime Hunters for the DS.

Which is to say, they'll be great!

I like the way in which, unlike Sony (with their various PS3 tech-demos) and MS (with their "high-def era";), Nintendo are trying to manage everyones expectations. Downplay graphics, then try to exceed everyones expectations.

    Woah, there's another Toonster!?

Anyway, that aside, I'm really interested in this. Imagine arse-kicking sword-fighting action. Yay for us!
  • Sko #37 6 years ago

So the Dad hands you the sword and tells you to find his daughter? Can you end the game quickly by giving the mobsters the damn thing and getting your bird back?
  • BartonFink #38 6 years ago

Ah this sounds very good indeed hopefully they get the implementation of the controls right. Still not entirely convinced it will work but hopefully E3 will address my scepticism about the controller. On the 'screenshots' as discussed at length in the forum these look like target renders but Blerk put it better. If they can get them close to those though it will look very good indeed.
