The Movies goes online

Put your films on the net.

Lionhead Studios has announced plans to launch a new website where players of forthcoming PC title The Movies can upload and share films.

Each movie you upload will get its own page where other gamers can post their ratings and comments. The higher you score, the more your reputation will grow, and the more virtual online credits you'll earn - which you can then use to buy new upgrades and extra content.

There will also be plenty of competitions to enter and awards ceremonies to attend, and something called the Prop Shop which you can visit to get access to additional downloads.

As you'll know if you read our recent preview of the game, The Movies puts you in the diamond-soled shoes of a top Hollywood movie mogul. As well as making your own films, you're in charge of designing your own studio, managing resources, dealing with cast and crew and, of course, making sure you pull in the cash at the box office.

The Movies Online isn't up and running yet, but when it is you'll find it on the game's official website.

The Movies is out on PC this autumn, with PS2, Xbox and Gamecube versions to follow.

Whoah, so they're still working on it then?

I remember seeing a designer role (whatever that is at Lionhead) on this advertised well over two years ago. I really thought it was going the way of BC, but it seems like they might actually finish it.

Sadly I cannot see the option of making porn movies being in this.

Like in the 'classic' Lula: The Sexy Empire?

    Man, that was crappy.

Nice idea but think it will fizzle out quite quickly. Most movies that are uploaded are likely to be complete crap and after reviewing a few of them who would want to carry on reviewing any more ??

If thousands of movies are uploaded what are the chances someone will stumble across yours and also take the time to review it (and it being positive a review to up your reputation).

It does work with custom created Flash movies and the like, so why not?

Also, having seent he preview of this on an e3 vid at Gamespot, it really does look rather nifty and customisable.

I'm a big fan of the concept but what I've seen of previews, the scripted (no pun intended) nature of the animations you peg together for the films seems a bit limited. I'm wondering that after you've seen the, what, three or four ways a fight can be handled, if you'll be bored.

*shrug* Maybe someone with a bit of an obsession will get something impressive out of it but for the rest of the movies, I can imagine they'd get old quick. Fingers crossed the actual 'game' aspect is fun enough.

I can't wait to use this tool to direct my upcoming movie, HOTD2.
