World of Mana trailer shown

Hurrah! No more details!

Square Enix showed off a trailer from its forthcoming World of Mana title at its big fancy Square Enix Party this weekend.

The company presented a short 30-second trailer, showing off a luscious forest before focusing on one of the series' archetypes, the Mana tree. While very little is known about the title, Square Enix announced that the project will span across a variety of media as well as games, including film, manga, novels and film.

Promotion material to accompany the trailer boasts the game will feature "unique characters, and environments drawn with a soft and smooth touch," although no format as been specified. However, Square Enix has expressed the desire to create the game across multiple platforms. As long as we get something that rivals Super Nintendo classic, Secret of Mana, we'll be happy.

World of Mana currently has no launch date.

Read the article; it's a new franchise spanning multiple forms of media. While Seiken Densetsu DS has already been announced, and it's safe to assume this will be an entry in the World of Mana brand, there's plenty more to come once Square Enix hammer out the details of how to present it and what direction it'll take. I wouldn't be surprised if every next-gen console saw an instantiation in some form or another, as well as DS and PSP. It doesn't seem like a current-gen thing, however. They began work on this in 2003, so it would have been preliminary work on next-gen concepts and perhaps another PC MMO if they can scale up their development that way. The franchise should probably also be handled exclusively by a single production studio, perhaps overseeing development by companies like Brownie Brown.

Is the World of Mana series the same as the Tales of... games? I didn't think so, but this thing about the Mana Tree is confusing me.

No, it's the Seiken Densestsu (Secret of Mana) series, as mentioned above.

If it's multiplayer, I'll be happy. That's what was so fantastic about the original on SNES :)

the mana games after seiken densetsu 3 have all been only so so. i hope this game turns out well. 3d adventures often have an edgy combat system. i hope they use the same view as in Final fantasy christal chronicles, then trow in some enemies that are actually worth killing and skillfull, and make bigger maps. this game would certainly be one of the best games of all time then.

Official World of Mana homepage with the trailer, which in fact showcases flamingoes flying past the Mana Tree (the "luscious forest" mentioned in the article is merely the canopy of the Mana Tree). You'll note that flamingoes were featured prominently in the box art for Secret of Mana, and that the design of the tree in the logo and trailer are exactly like in that game. So maybe that's a good thing?

Since FFCC was very much like a Mana game, with only a name change to Final Fantasy, it's perfectly likely that that's the sort of shape we can expect from a Mana game. Perhaps even the same team for one of the titles, since Game Designer's Studio was set up for the specific purpose of assisting companies in collaborative development for the Gamecube and other modern Nintendo platforms.

Isn't the cover art of Secret of Mana somewhat similar to a certain scene in Laputa:Castle in the Sky. That's what I always think when I watch Laputa, anyway:-)

[/i]the mana games after seiken densetsu 3 have all been only so so.[/i]

The translated version of 3 is excellent, really enjoyable, but Legend of Mana is the best of the lot. Hugely underrated.

Aren't you contradicting yourself then? There have only been two Mana games since SD3, of which one is Legend of Mana and the other is the Brownie Brown GBA remake Sword of Mana (which wasn't particularly well-received).

I'll just wait for more details to filter through. I don't even remember completing the PS release of this game. I just stopped playing after completing 75% of the game. Must have been distracted by some other game.

The screen shots which I have seen for this new game is the same as of the old. That is the house under the Mana Tree (Starting point). I hope this one will look and play better, then the previous installments.
