Mass Effect DLC released on PC News

PC News by Robert Purchese

30 July, 2008

The PC version of Mass Effect mission pack Bring Down the Sky is now available to download.

This is completely free for those punching keys and wiggling mice, though there do seem to be some teething problems.

Members of the official Mass Effect forum point to graphical glitches with NVIDIA cards as well as various technical hiccups after installing the Bring Down the Sky content.

If you can find a "repair" option in the "configure" settings of the game launcher, the problems should be fixable. However, this "repair" appears to only be available in the US version of the game.

Bring Down the Sky is already available on Xbox 360, but sadly felt like a missed opportunity to us. Head over to our Bring Down the Sky review to find out why.

Mass Effect was released for PC in May and is the better of the two versions available, thanks to more organised inventory, hot-keys, and separable squad commands.

Catch up with our thoughts in the Mass Effect PC review.

Hmmmm. An interesting decision. Not sure how that will sit with people who have bought the 360 version.

You could say the same thing about COD4 kangarootoo, but bare in mind that we PC people had to wait for those expansions far longer than the console crowd, plus the PC has always been a free patch/content system so there is really no reason for the console owners to complain.

It was supposed to be free at the launch of the game.

I finished the game a month or so ago, and it was great but I'm not sure I can be bothered to go through it again. From what I've read about the DLC that probably isn't enough to make me rethink that. Maybe I'll give it another go in a year or so.

@Gurrah

Well Oblivion followed the same model on all platforms when it came to purchasable content. I realise that the longer wait does perhaps mean that something else has to be bundled in to ensure gamers are happier with the wait. I guess its not really much different to a GOTY edition.

Really enjoying Mass Effect; couldn't be arsed about paying for an hour's worth of extra game when this one is so big!

Roll on ME2 - but no ideas when. Hopefully, if the sequel is a bit cleverer, smoother and even bigger, it could (should) be a 10/10 title.

I can tolerate the bugginess of this game but why haven't they modified the controls? Driving that vehicle thingy is a nightmare using keyboard input. ME hardly breaks any new ground so I'll be giving the DLC a miss (if the BORING sidequests are any indication)

Per a post on the ME forums, European users can achieve the texture fix manually by deleting the shader cache 'LocalShaderCache-PC-D3D-SM3.upk' at My Documents\BioWare\Mass Effect\Published\CookedPC.

Awesome! Now my limited edition tin is going to continue to lose value over time! I thought this crap was supposed to go up!

Rather disappointed with the DLC, not really a lot to do, and pretty pointless story wise.

I'm still waiting for a patch to be able to play Mass Effect in the first place. Something to do with the AMD Phenom processor.

Any one know if this has been fixed?

Twats!!! Why charge 360 owners for this if its free for the PC? Free stuff has been posted on the 360 before, but this is pretty bad. I wouldn't mind but the extra mission is crap anyway!!! This is a big F U to 360 owners!

It was always advertised as being free for PC users, and it was supposed to be at release as well - to entice more sales.

I've since moved on to other games now anyway, but I might check it out if I give ME another run through at some point.
