Mad Catz claims big demand for FightStick

UK SF IV peripheral pre-orders begin today.

Peripheral manufacturer Mad Catz has said it will struggle to meet UK demand for the official FightStick: Tournament Edition for Street Fighter IV.

In a statement issued yesterday evening, the firm said it would be "working hard to meet day one shipments" but "can not guarantee that every customer wishing to purchase this premium product will be able to...on the first day of release".

Instead, Mad Catz is advising UK gamers to keep their eyes on its online store this afternoon when it will be taking "strictly limited pre-orders". "Orders on the store will be fulfilled strictly on a first come first serve basis and will only be available for purchase and delivery to mainland UK customers," it said.

The FightStick: Tournament Edition, a regular FightStick and a range of SF IV-themed FightPads with arcade-style button arrangements are due out at the game's launch on 20th February for PS3 and Xbox 360.

Interest in the FightStick: Tournament Edition grew after its CES unveiling last week. With a design influenced by SF IV producer Yoshinori Ono, it's built from actual Japanese stick components and has all sorts of wacky mechanisms for ensuring you get what you want during tournament play.

Those who are less serious about virtual punch-ups can opt for the considerably cheaper vanilla FightStick (USD 69-79 versus USD 149 for the Tournament Edition), which lacks the authentic Japanese components but still promises things like dual-speed Turbo buttons with LED indicators and moves-list inserts.

UK pricing is still unconfirmed, according to a Mad Catz spokesperson, but presumably we'll find out when the pre-orders go live on the website this afternoon.

Meanwhile, responding in Edge magazine this month to suggestions that third-party peripherals are usually tacky, Mark Julio, one of the stick enthusiasts contributing to the FightStick design, said that Mad Catz is "now focused on quality and not quantity; we're a very different company today to that of a few years ago".

You'll be able to find out whether we agree when we review the FightSticks and FightPad closer to their release date.

i wish i could afford this... but i feel the sticks would be better placed in the hands of an aspiring hardcore...
  • DFawkes #2 3 years ago

I'll never properly undersand the need for a stick. That's probably because I've alway played them with a d-pad, and also possibly because I'm too rubbish at fighting games to play them in public on an arcade machine.

It is an admittedly lovely piece of kit though.
  • neonxaos #3 3 years ago

My God, why do I live in Denmark? Nothing cool ever comes to Denmark. "Strictly mainland UK customers..." *sigh*! Produce more of these sticks, MadCatz! Hell, if you want the 3000 piece SFIV run to be limited, do a plain vanilla version of the Tournament stick in black or white or something. If you build it, WE WILL BUY! I don't want the basic stick, I already have three decent Hori EX3 sticks - I want the BEST.

    /whining rant

PS - thanks to EG for following up on this!

Also - can anyone tell me what I must do to get my hands on one of these things? I know that I can preorder them at Play-Asia, but the price there is $179, and I have to pay about the same amount in customs. $350 is a little excessive for one stick, cool as it may be. Thank you very much, Danish government! :D Anyone know of a better option?

here's an idea the Mad Catz guys might want to bat around: make some more.
  • Rash' #5 3 years ago

merkdot, or maybe, just maybe, this is all just a ploy to increase demand...
  • dopeonthetable #6 3 years ago

Could anyone who has some expertise when it comes to arcade sticks tell me what the second best stick will be once the FS:TE is released? Would it be the regular the FightStick or something by Hori?

    For 360, please!
  • merkdot #7 3 years ago

Rash': I was trying to suppress my cynicism for just one brief moment, damn you sir.
  • pesser #8 3 years ago

here an idea how about they make MORE FUCKING STICKS
  • strelok #9 3 years ago

    @dopeonthetable:

that will be Hori Real Arcade Pro EX
  • Waffleaber #10 3 years ago

Glad you mentioned that strelok, I was just wondering if Eurogamer would do a head-to-head with the Hori stick or if they'd skip it because it's import only at the moment.
  • neonxaos #11 3 years ago

Strelok is correct, but the Real Arcade Pro EX is also hard to find. The EX2 in its various versions is still a decent stick too, and very cheap.

The 360 stick tier list should go like this:

SF4 TE stick (full Sanwa, etc)
HRAP EX (Sanwa stick, Hori buttons, standard size - 30mm)
SF4 regular edition stick (stock parts, standard size buttons, easier to mod & change stuff)
Hori Ex2 (Hori stick & buttons, button size is a bit smaller, harder to mod & change broken stuff)

I have a mortgage to pay! will they mind if I don't pay one month?
  • michaelius #15 3 years ago

I don't care about fight stick. I want that lovely joystick they have on site :D
  • Mayhem64 #16 3 years ago

Got the TE stick on pre-order, let's hope I get one! But it's the only way to go for SF, the pad and joystick on a 360 pad are not quite good enough for the control required for this sort of fighting game.
  • neonxaos #17 3 years ago

Mayhem - where do you have it on preorder?
  • dopeonthetable #18 3 years ago

strelok- that's excellent, thanks very much. I'll look these up and see what's best for me.

  • n_nlemon #20 3 years ago

the EX2 is standard button size..
    sanwas pop right in..

it's a pain in the ass to desolder the stock buttons off the board though..

I have two and they're a good stick for the money..

until someone comments on the internals of the SF4 regular edition, it's impossible to say how hard it is to mod..
it's internal configuration is likely to be similar to the EX2 judging by the size of it..

  • binky #24 3 years ago

What's wrong with the stock buttons on the EX2 btw? Why do people want to mod them?
  • Reihn #25 3 years ago

I like the quote at the end - seems like a good move, to go from mass producing cheap controllers to doing high end peripherals. What with the music/rhythm game explosion there's definitely a market for this sort of thing.

My question is, if you've planning to shift the company's focus like that, and significantly improve the quality of your products, shouldn't you rebrand???

When I hear 'Mad Catz', I always think of my friends shoddy translucent green and blue PS2 controllers. They had shorter cords than the official one, so whoever was 'player 2' had to sit on the very edge couch, or sit on the floor.. : ) At any rate, I'd imagine that starting fresh with a snazzy new name for your premium product line would be easier than reversing all the perception currently associated with the Mad Catz name..

    My 2 cents.. ; )
  • strelok #26 3 years ago

Didn't you have trouble putting the sanwas in without filing the small tabs on the holes on the panel?

  • w1ntermute #32 3 years ago

They haven't even released the pre-orders yet. Keep an eye on the page. Shopto have closed their pre-orders, but I'd personally wait for a chance at a mad catz pre-order, as you know they're more likely to have them to ship.

  • strelok #55 3 years ago

    @JackyB:

I presume you are asking about a PS3 stick:

HRAP3 is an excellent stick (I have one myself), easily serviceable if need be. Also readily available (you will need to import it though, or get it from a store, that have it imported), no need to wait till next month.

You can also get the regular edition SF4 stick. That one is using stock madcatz parts, but is also mod & service friendly, according to MarkMan@SDTekken who is involved in the design.

At the low end is the Hori Fighting stick 3 (which is available at amazon.co.uk, I think). Not as good as the others, but still an ok purchase (and quite cheap) if you have never used a stick before to get a flavor about what it is like.
  • XdarXideX #56 3 years ago

Woot! I only wanted the £70 stick... just can't justify the £150 myself. Got my receipt and confirmation. WIN! Thanks Eurogamer! I would not have know about this otherwise!
  • Prismatic #57 3 years ago

Oh man they've made a mess of my order :(

Went for the 150 stick, was in such a rush that i didnt even notice it was the cymbals that went in, contacted them quickly when I saw the confirmation email. They have given me a ring back saying they have refunded it and to try again, did it while she was still on the phone and the order kept failing so now shes gone off to figure it out and will ring me back.

If they dont get a stick to me I am gonna be really annoyed D:
  • w1ntermute #58 3 years ago

The cymbal was going in at £25.

Many F5's later they fixed the price.

    Ordered TE. Confirmation received.
  • JackyB #59 3 years ago

Received confirmation on TE, so hope thats enough to get me one, but never know!. Many thanks to Strelok, Wintermute, kcimkram, and prismatic for the great info

  • Prismatic #60 3 years ago

Well they got back to me saying that as I was one of the first to order they are going to keep the 25 as a deposit and when the sticks come in arrange payment for the rest.

I'm sceptical about it as there are so few being made available but I guess I'll have to wait and see =/
  • JackyB #61 3 years ago

    good luck prismatic
  • THE1LIKESAF #62 3 years ago

Managed to pre order the ps3 tourny stick and the ps3 ryu pad. :) Wonder why they don't have the Akuma pad. Need that as well! It says pre orders are suspended again. Does that mean it's all over now?
    Edited by 1 at 14/01/09 @ 17:30
  • Santino #63 3 years ago

it is quite strange that EVERYTHING is suspended from ordering, including the pads. oh well, managed to get a TE stick for the ps3 and standard for the 360 ordered...gonna hurt the wallet a bit but i'll sell my modded ex2 to try and get at least some of it back haha.
  • THE1LIKESAF #64 3 years ago

Hmmm although everything says suspendid, if you click on some stuff, you still have the buy noww button available.
  • wellsie #65 3 years ago

So is that it all sold out? balls, bloody meeting at work!
  • Remy #66 3 years ago

Yeah I just got in from work and I am SERIOUSLY ****ED OFF ABOUT THIS.

*Rages in annoyance at their sheer stupidity and desire not to take my money* I'd happily order 2 or more just to get ONE on the first day. I've wanted this stick for over a year now. :(
  • THE1LIKESAF #67 3 years ago

Sorry Remy dude. :( A few of my mates were trying to order one at the same time I was and they all failed. Who ever got one, count yourself lucky!
  • neonxaos #68 3 years ago

I tried everything, no dice. Even tried to get a friend in the UK to order for me and then I attempted to make a German site ship to Denmark. But no success.

This is very frustrating. I expected to at least be able to sign up for the next run of the sticks or something, but it looks like I'm completely out of stock. i wanted that stick bad, and that's only getting worse now that I can't get the thing at all.

Very tempted to seek out a Real Arcade pro EX instead of this complete and utter joke.
  • THE1LIKESAF #69 3 years ago

I got 6 phone calls from mates who are right now still trying to find the tourny sticks. One even offered 300 quid for mine if he cant find one, I said, dont be silly........I want 500! Nah kidding, I'd never sell it! :)
  • neonxaos #70 3 years ago

As they produce more they will be allocated to the online stores who were promised stock. Maintaining relationships and all that. Don't worry folks. You will get one, just maybe not on day of release.
  • Remy #74 3 years ago

Yeah thats the trouble too though.. I've booked the darn release day off work for this. :(

Now although getting SF4 would be cool, what I REALLY want is the stick to play HD Remix on. Far more exciting than SF4 itself!
  • neonxaos #75 3 years ago

I'm with ya, Remy. I had to work way into the evening today because I spent so much time trying to get that damn stick.

My EX2 will have to do, but I was really looking forward to the whole fabled Sanwa experience. I hope kcimkram is correct, though. If there is demand, it would be madness not to produce more - they have the whole production queue lined for for it now anyway, don't they.

I'll try to stop bitching now - it's just another stick, and I already have several EX2 sticks. I hope I can pick one up one fine day, though.

My French is terrible so I can't offer any guidance in the ordering process though I assume it is the same as all other Amazon sites, if you already have an Amazon account you can use that as they work globally.
  • conners #77 3 years ago

Just ordered the SFIV Stick without any problems. Not sure what all the fuss is about - Must be a late night thing.

Don't even need it as I already have a quality Arcade stick- just a bit boozed up and fancied the purchase. Oh well. Credit crunch and all that.

Will let you know what its like if I can even be arsed to open the packaging.

Either way, its better value for money than Kaka.

All the best - RA Abramovitch.
  • neonxaos #78 3 years ago

Prismatic, you are a genius! I just got my preorder in. Only thing is, they seem to think that 150 dollars equals 150 Euros, but at least it's cheaper than importing it. Thanks a whole lot, mate!

Everyone who wants a TE stick should go for this option. If you don't understand French, just have the UK site running beside it when ordering. The process is identical, and as Prismatic says, you can use your existing Amazon UK account login. I'm sure that Amazon UK will eventually have these things up for preorder, but I'm not taking any chances :) Remy, I hope you get your preorder in too!

Thanks to everyone in this thread - I have to say that you guys have done a lot to help with this.

conners - where did you get your preorder in? The more options for everyone who still wants a stick, the better :)
  • kcimkram #79 3 years ago

Mmmm...I don't want to worry anyone but I would be a bit sceptical of Amazon France.I could but wrong , maybe it will turn out ok for you guys that have ordered from them.

You will probably find the reason for short allocation is Chinese New Year(not just the high demand).I have worked with Chinese companies in the past and a lot of factories close for 2 weeks during the festivities. This can have a real impact on production for some companies.

I think CNY is Jan 26th to Feb 8th this year
    Edited by 1 at 15/01/09 @ 10:21
  • neonxaos #80 3 years ago

Hmm, kcimkram, imo Amazon France seems just as reliable as UK. They even ship via the same company, Amazon Europe. Nothing in the order confirmation is different from what I usually get from UK, except for the language. Do you have any specific reason for your scepticism?
  • kcimkram #81 3 years ago

No real reason.Amazon are a good company.

The thing that would concern me is that they still have it available to order now.I doubt they would have got much of an allocation. They should have sold out by now.

Also Amazon UK haven't turned it on yet as they are probably waiting for their allocation confirmation.I'm pretty sure Amazon UK would be prioritised over Amazon France.

I could be wrong. It just seems a bit unusal.
  • neonxaos #82 3 years ago

    Valid points!

I see that they have closed the preorders now, though - you can only sign up to get a notice when the product is available now. But they have not cancelled my preorder, so there may still be hope.

Let's see how it goes. Perhaps EG will follow up on the story in connection with their reviews of the sticks.
  • Remy #83 3 years ago

Ah cheers Prismatic for the .fr links, but sadly too late for me again. :( Curses if only I could sit on this thread. Still I appreciate all the good info here fellas & the goodwill. :) (also impressed we all ignored the obvous troll!) I'm currently ringing around places trying to get a preorder somewhere.. playtime seem to be the best bet right now. Full RRP though (150), but its still cheaper than paying postage from the USA. If Amazon.co.uk suddenly put the sticks up, I can order one from them too. I was tempted to get 2 anyway :p So ordering two just to try and make sure I get one isn't any huge pain for me... I was going to end up spending about the same to import a single Arcade-in-a-box or Gopodular anyway.

Can I spam my blog here? :p

That's a really cool blog, Remy. Bookmarked.

I play a fair bit of Remix on Live, and I'm always looking for serious players to beat the hell out of me. I've been playing SF since way back, but I'm from Denmark, and the lack of competition here means that I've never become a high-level player, so online is a godsend for me. My gamertag is neonxaos if you fancy a few matches - I would really like to play someone who actually wants to talk about matchup-specific strats, difficult combos and the like, and who has the patience to watch me fail at them :)

I will also be picking up SFIV and KOF when they're released - hopefully my new stick will help, if I actually get it. very nice writeup on sticks for the X360 on the blog, btw.
  • kcimkram #85 3 years ago

I'm pretty sure some more pre-orders will be turned on next week.

If I get any more firm(ish) info then I'll post on here.It turned out pretty reliable last time(phew!).

I've already got mine pre-ordered but I'm happy to help out especially if it stops any of you paying extortionate prices from Ebay :)
  • Remy #86 3 years ago

    @neonxaos

Thanks! Glad someone liked it. I'm Remy77077 on XBL (and pretty much everywhere except here, as I actually managed to get 'just' Remy somehow :p) and I'll send you an add request cos as long as we can get a decent ping time I am sure we'd be great opponents, sounds like you have exactly the same experience and mindset as me. I've also suffered from the "no competition" problem for years.. hehe, anyway, I blogged all about that to save me re-typing it over again :p (you'll also find posts about SF4 and KOF12 if you are interested!).
I love getting matchup specific stuff down in HDR too. But I'm still learning a lot about that myself. I've think I've got great SF basics & yomi, but my matchup knowledge and execution sometimes leave a lot to be desired.

Thanks matey! :) If I end up with two it'll be cool though. If playtime can guarantee me one on the day I'll happily pay them 150 up front. If another one comes to me through amazon all the better :D

Remy - that's great - I have a good connection, but I've been experiencing some NAT issues and disconnects lately. Let's hope it works for us.

kcimkram - Amazon UK have told me that they're looking into it (I know they're serious because their admin actually chose to contact me in a general discussion about the sticks, instead of just giving me a standard "go away"-reply :))

Hey guys I just need to know, if you got a pre order from gameshark's site when they had um up for like 10 mins, and they have taken full payment, does that mean we'll defo get one on day 1???
  • neonxaos #89 3 years ago

THE1LIKESAF - you should be good for the stick + 1 day's shipping. I never receive anything on shipping date, but as you must be in the UK, you just might be in luck.

They are way cheaper at gameseek! I have asked Amazon to reconsider their pricing...

£10 cheaper isn't that much... I hate paying the same number of £ that the yanks pay $ :(

After doing a ton of research into the alternatives, I just pre ordered a standard stick from Amazon, but can anyone tell me how much shipping is from Gameseek? (I'm too lazy to register just to find that out.) And are they quicker than Amazon?
