Mad Catz claims big demand for FightStick News

Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 News by Tom Bramwell

14 January, 2009

Peripheral manufacturer Mad Catz has said it will struggle to meet UK demand for the official FightStick: Tournament Edition for Street Fighter IV.

In a statement issued yesterday evening, the firm said it would be "working hard to meet day one shipments" but "can not guarantee that every customer wishing to purchase this premium product will be able to...on the first day of release".

Instead, Mad Catz is advising UK gamers to keep their eyes on its online store this afternoon when it will be taking "strictly limited pre-orders". "Orders on the store will be fulfilled strictly on a first come first serve basis and will only be available for purchase and delivery to mainland UK customers," it said.

The FightStick: Tournament Edition, a regular FightStick and a range of SF IV-themed FightPads with arcade-style button arrangements are due out at the game's launch on 20th February for PS3 and Xbox 360.

Interest in the FightStick: Tournament Edition grew after its CES unveiling last week. With a design influenced by SF IV producer Yoshinori Ono, it's built from actual Japanese stick components and has all sorts of wacky mechanisms for ensuring you get what you want during tournament play.

Those who are less serious about virtual punch-ups can opt for the considerably cheaper vanilla FightStick (USD 69-79 versus USD 149 for the Tournament Edition), which lacks the authentic Japanese components but still promises things like dual-speed Turbo buttons with LED indicators and moves-list inserts.

UK pricing is still unconfirmed, according to a Mad Catz spokesperson, but presumably we'll find out when the pre-orders go live on the website this afternoon.

Meanwhile, responding in Edge magazine this month to suggestions that third-party peripherals are usually tacky, Mark Julio, one of the stick enthusiasts contributing to the FightStick design, said that Mad Catz is "now focused on quality and not quantity; we're a very different company today to that of a few years ago".

You'll be able to find out whether we agree when we review the FightSticks and FightPad closer to their release date.

I'll never properly undersand the need for a stick. That's probably because I've alway played them with a d-pad, and also possibly because I'm too rubbish at fighting games to play them in public on an arcade machine.

It is an admittedly lovely piece of kit though.

My God, why do I live in Denmark? Nothing cool ever comes to Denmark. "Strictly mainland UK customers..." *sigh*! Produce more of these sticks, MadCatz! Hell, if you want the 3000 piece SFIV run to be limited, do a plain vanilla version of the Tournament stick in black or white or something. If you build it, WE WILL BUY! I don't want the basic stick, I already have three decent Hori EX3 sticks - I want the BEST.

/whining rant

PS - thanks to EG for following up on this!

Also - can anyone tell me what I must do to get my hands on one of these things? I know that I can preorder them at Play-Asia, but the price there is $179, and I have to pay about the same amount in customs. $350 is a little excessive for one stick, cool as it may be. Thank you very much, Danish government! :D Anyone know of a better option?

Could anyone who has some expertise when it comes to arcade sticks tell me what the second best stick will be once the FS:TE is released? Would it be the regular the FightStick or something by Hori?

For 360, please!

Glad you mentioned that strelok, I was just wondering if Eurogamer would do a head-to-head with the Hori stick or if they'd skip it because it's import only at the moment.

Strelok is correct, but the Real Arcade Pro EX is also hard to find. The EX2 in its various versions is still a decent stick too, and very cheap.

Detailed look at the TE, with comments on how it differs from the HRAP.

Edit: What the fuck is up with the link formatting? Is it different in the comments section?

The 360 stick tier list should go like this:

SF4 TE stick (full Sanwa, etc)
HRAP EX (Sanwa stick, Hori buttons, standard size - 30mm)
SF4 regular edition stick (stock parts, standard size buttons, easier to mod & change stuff)
Hori Ex2 (Hori stick & buttons, button size is a bit smaller, harder to mod & change broken stuff)

Got the TE stick on pre-order, let's hope I get one! But it's the only way to go for SF, the pad and joystick on a 360 pad are not quite good enough for the control required for this sort of fighting game.

sanwas pop right in..

it's a pain in the ass to desolder the stock buttons off the board though..

I have two and they're a good stick for the money..

until someone comments on the internals of the SF4 regular edition, it's impossible to say how hard it is to mod..
it's internal configuration is likely to be similar to the EX2 judging by the size of it..

I like the quote at the end - seems like a good move, to go from mass producing cheap controllers to doing high end peripherals. What with the music/rhythm game explosion there's definitely a market for this sort of thing.

My question is, if you've planning to shift the company's focus like that, and significantly improve the quality of your products, shouldn't you rebrand???

When I hear 'Mad Catz', I always think of my friends shoddy translucent green and blue PS2 controllers. They had shorter cords than the official one, so whoever was 'player 2' had to sit on the very edge couch, or sit on the floor.. : ) At any rate, I'd imagine that starting fresh with a snazzy new name for your premium product line would be easier than reversing all the perception currently associated with the Mad Catz name..

My 2 cents.. ; )

They haven't even released the pre-orders yet. Keep an eye on the page. Shopto have closed their pre-orders, but I'd personally wait for a chance at a mad catz pre-order, as you know they're more likely to have them to ship.
