Jeri Ryan explains Mortal Kombat video

RZA reckons new film will "bring back bong".

Jeri Ryan, one of the stars of a Mortal Kombat movie clip doing the rounds on the internet, has revealed more about its origins.

"It's not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film," she wrote on Twitter.

"I did it as a favour to a friend. No idea yet what WB's reaction to it was. And I'm not sure how you can contact WB to push them to make it. But you guys are resourceful!"

Wu-Tang Clan member RZA has also been twittering about the video. He reckons it's by Kevin Tanchoeren, director of, um, the 2009 Fame movie and Britney Spears Live from Miami.

"This should bring back Mortal Kombat BONG!!" wrote the RZA. And goodness knows we'd all like to see that.

Warner Bros. has yet to comment on the video clip. Why not take a look for yourself?

The Mortal Kombat video in question.

Kick ass video, but you just know they'd fuck up the finished article with someone throwing a fireball... would love to see it made though.

If they do make this they need to keep hold of the fight choreographer they had for this short. He did all the fights for the straight to DVD Undisputed 3 and the fight sequences in that film are effin fantastic, some of the best I've seen. Ohh and yes, keep Michael Jai White.

So it's nothing to do with the new game? Thank God. Slick as it is, I want the new MK to go back to the series roots. Like Capcom did with Street Fighter IV.

    "Get over here!"

Made me grin. Oi luvs a bit of Mortal Kombat.
  • MrJoeSnow #8 2 years ago

What a load of pish. Why do they think they need to explain the characters in this way. Reptile was cool enough as a lizard man and Baracka as a monster. You can't rationalize those kind of characters in a real world setting. They are not bloody X-files.
Get your head out of your bong RZA!
  • taurus82 #9 2 years ago

Yes, keep the gritty and brutal combat, and apply it to the MK mythology (Outworld/Portals/Elder Gods etc etc).
You know, the movie the original should've been.

    Dynamite... Dynamite...
  • LR100 #11 2 years ago

How did RZA find out who it was? I also find it hard to believe the director behind it was the guy who did Fame etc! He must have some good writers helping him out...
  • Eldritch #12 2 years ago

Jeri Ryan has seen better times indeed.
  • pzykozis #13 2 years ago

... What..?! So... this is Raiden.. he's like born with a birth defect that allows him to launch lightning from his hands...

Way to ruin a great series.

Hopefully this'll disappear somewhere dark and never surface again.
  • Boomerang #14 2 years ago

Goosebumps. This should be made. As a proof of concept, it's very professionally done.

    "Get over here!!"

Michael Jai White and Matt Mullins... people who can actually fight. Didn't think I would ever see that and anything to do with Mortal Kombat come together.

Make Kano russian and have Scott Adkins play him
  • KujiGhost #17 2 years ago

I have finally come to a decision that this looks terrible.
  • The-Bodybuilder #18 2 years ago

Yes indeedy, scott adkins as kano.
Although, I'm not sure how enthusiastic he would be of acting out boyka 2.0.

BTW, if anyone enjoyed this, get your hands on undisputed 2 and PLEASE BUY undisputed 3 (so there can be a 4th one), the best action movie so far this year from the west.

This is a potentially awesome reboot...

Mortal Kombat was dead people. Deader than the deadest dead thing after a fatality. How on earth can people stand up and say now "Hmm, I like MK of old..." MK of old was SHIT! We didn't buy the games, we never watched the films, we didn't tune into the TV show or cartoons and we failed to buy the comics. A reboot had to start from the ground up, and I for one like this idea. I don't think all the mystical stuff will have gone, because then you're kind of left with a handful of combatants (I state again - Stryker, DO NOT WANT!) - plus this was set in a futuristic city where violent crime and murder has reached epidemic proportions.

But really, we didn't buy MK of old in any way, shape or form. Commercially, the only way MK can survive now is a complete reboot - and I for one think this is a ballsy and great idea. Not everyone will like it, of course not - if you managed to miss the last decade of crapness this series has inflicted on us in pretty much every medium possible, then you are to be envied and are entitled to believe the series still has relevance. The rest of us, this whole series had become a benchmark of crapness that even crap games now can't match.

So a reboot isn't just a nice idea, it's essential for the franchise to survive. This movie pitch has a great little idea, with some pretty nerdy choices of actor, a simple plot but complicated characters, and Jeri Ryan. I am 100% for this to be made into a full film, and I hope that MK9 similarly realises that the franchise needs to go back to the start now and undo everything it's done over the years... any franchise that can end up putting out a title like Armageddon should really, genuinely be ashamed of itself and ask itself this question...

"Where did it all go wrong?"

"I want the new MK to go back to the series roots. Like Capcom did with Street Fighter IV. "

I didn't realise SF had left it roots. Surely in order to do that, it would have had to actually go somewhere?

I agree with Kami's points. The MK franchise isn't really worth anything these days. It has turned into the James Bond / Batman films of a generation ago and needs a proper seeing to.

Never got into Mortal Kombat. By the time I played it on the handheld Sega it was probably "before my time". But I'm never gonna turn on a blockbuster, or Jeri Ryan :D :p

I would actually pay money to go see this and I doubt I would be alone.

Sling in a teenage wizard, a heartless vampire who has a jailbait girlfriend and a set of talking toys and lo and behold next years summer sensation.
  • azazel_fallenangel #32 2 years ago

Didn't Chris Cassamassa(Scorpion from the first film) say he was asked to do a new film? I remember a news story a while back, may of even been on here. Was that him in the video?

EDIT: ah, found it: http://ww w.eurogamer.net/articles/third-...

Hard to judge not knowing the real intent of this, seems extremely high budget for merely selling an idea for production, more like a teaser to drop on the internet and guage the reaction, like the largest free test audience.

Looked okay though despite the fact that a lot of it was pure Matrix rip-off territory, like the fight scene which was almost exactly the dojo fight at points, and the hyperactive soundtrack getting excited about every little sentence.
