Green Lantern game in 2011?

Double Helix to develop - report

Warner Bros. is set to publish a PS3 and Xbox 360 game based on the Green Lantern in 2011, according to a report on VentureBeat.

The report states that Double Helix is handling development and the game may be released to coincide with the launch of a new Green Lantern film in June 2011.

Warner reportedly dismissed this as "rumour and speculation". We've yet to hear back from the publisher ourselves.

Pre-production on the Green Lantern film is due to begin this month, according to IMDB, with filming to begin in November. Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, GoldenEye, etc.) is set to direct.

Is this the hero who uses his 'magic helmet' according to the 1 in 1 vs 100. :)

(Yes I know it's his ring for those who didn't play it the other night.)

    Meh.
The only DC Hero I feel any love for is Batman, and even he sucks when they lump him with the others.
    Marvel all the way, baby.

Unfortunately Ryan Reynolds is set to be Green Lantern.

    3/10 for the game
    8/10 for the movie

The green lantern's ability is to create anything he wants. How exactly will that work in a game? They'll have to restrict it to just a handful of things - attacking laser, defensive fore field, cage/bubble and perhaps a context-sensitive 'tool' (hammer/crowbar/shovel). He'll just be a standard action character in a green costume.

What's the likelihood that he'll get amnesia/damage his ring (ouch) at the start of the game forcing you to relearn a load of powers?

Hmm, always felt Green Lantern works best as a large scale cosmic comic. I doubt either the film or game will leave Earth's atmosphere for any length of time so i'm not holding out much hope for either.

As millerlfc says the constructs would be quite limited too. However if they made a Green Lantern game with Scribblenaughts style control it might well be the best thing ever.

ryan reynolds is the green lantarn, well thats a crappy move, the flash i would understand but GL i think that david Borneaz (angel) would make a pretty good GL if the GL would be Hal Jordan,

Dunno if it's true, but internet scuttlebut suggests the film takes place almost entirely off-Earth. Would make sense to me - he's a space cop, he should be in space.

Green Lantern has the potential to be DC/Warner's Iron Man in that he's a moderately-well-known superhero who can be allowed to have a sense of humour, and it's got a very simple premise (space cop with magic ring). Reynolds is good; not my first choice, but I think he'll do fine.

The game is a no-brainer seeing as they're making a movie; whether it'll be any good, however, is another matter. We can but hope.

Admittedly I haven't seen much of the green lantern comics/cartoons etc. but is the character a little..... shitty. As far as I can tell its someone with a magic ring. That's kind of shitty.
  • Tonne #12 3 years ago

@deckard, you dont know the character at all. GL is one of the best superhero out there, he's a normal human except for the ring that takes enormous power of will to command, i hope they really focus on the character of Hal Jordan because it's the human side that makes him a great superhero

So he's kind of like Frodo Baggins in green spandex?

You just made coffee come out of my nose you git!

    @Deckard1

He's like Han Solo except instead of a blaster, he wears a green ring which can pretty much do anything he can think of. I don't read the main GL comics, but he crops up regularly enough across the rest of the DC line, so I can safely say he's a funky dude and theoretically the film should be great.

As a sci-fi concept, it's no sillier than the Jedi, and like I say Hal can be a bit of a swaggering womanising sarcastic cock, and those are always the best kinds of heroes.

A Green Lantern Corps vs. Sinestro plotline could be nice, but too little "merchandisable". Probably more likely to be a "Green Lantern in Justice League" thing because then they can add other heroes/toys as well. Except Smallville already did Justice League (Green Arrow, Aquaman, Superman, etc.)...

But this will probably just be a bad movie tie-in.
