GHWT-to-GH5 song transfer priced

35 songs can be copied over.

Only 35 out of 85 songs in Guitar Hero World Tour can be imported into the upcoming Guitar Hero 5, according to a report.

In a feature on the latest instalment in the music game series, USA Today (thanks Kotaku) mentions the 35-song figure and says it costs 280 Microsoft Points (£2.38 / €3.36) on Xbox 360 and $3.50 on PlayStation 3 to perform the operation.

By way of comparison, it costs 400 MSP (£3.40 / €4.80) to import 55 of Rock Band 1's songs into Rock Band 2.

Activision has previously noted that Guitar Hero 5 DLC won't be backwardly compatible with Guitar Hero World Tour, either, putting the problem down to "advancements and innovations".

The majority of downloadable songs for GHWT will work with GH5, however.

Guitar Hero 5 is due out on 11th September and will be reviewed next week. Check out our Guitar Hero 5 preview to see what the deal is this time.

Great. Now tell us what they are. If they're the right songs I may consider getting GH5.
  • Eraysor #2 2 years ago

That's a bit crap compared to RB, but better than nothing.

This is the first GH title I haven't pre-ordered. Getting a bit sick of them now to be honest...
  • toythatkills #5 2 years ago

Amazing. At least Harmonix appear to give a shit with this stuff, Activision are more "well, as long as we appear to be offering the same services as our competitors, the morons and suckers will lap it up."

Saying that, there aren't even 35 good songs in that shit, are there?
  • aphexstwin #6 2 years ago

tool might make it across, after that im a bit stumped. i got to the point of being able to play around the world on rb2, and until i did i thought the setlist was a bit meh. but the challenge of panic attack and visions on drums really opened up the game, i now think its an awesome list. my 360 died tho. i doesnt matter that its 35 shit songs from ghwt, i'd be more concerned about the tripe thats gunna come 5.

Its a mugs game. Literally. For that reason, i'm out. (I was never in tbh.)

For the money some people waste on this and rb you could afford to bring Les Paul back to life and have him make you a custom guitar. He would probably chuck in some lessons too!

For the money some people waste on this and rb you could

... get more fun gaming hours per pound spent than any other game in recent memory?
  • Bazfrag #9 2 years ago

lol no. £20 and 4000 hours later, Cs:Source says hi. If it was gh they would charge real money for ammo clips.
  • Zomoniac #10 2 years ago

Charging you money to port the songs over?
Am I reading that right? Fuck me, what is happening to gaming...

How many games are there that let you shift ANY of the content from the previous version for free? Or at all, for that matter? If a big FPS game let you move the single-player game and multiplayer maps into the new version for a fiver so you could sell your old game and still get all the content you'd be all over it. But the music game haters just love to bitch about anything. When RB2 came out I paid about £4 to get all the songs from RB1 into it, then sold my RB1 disc on PlayTrade for £30. I still get everything I love from the first game, and the cost to me is -£26. But I've still got all 3 Halo games, all the GTA games, even all my SingStar games, because if I sell them I won't be able to play them. Because of that import feature I made enough to pretty much buy a new game. So how were they ripping me off exactly??
  • jaxon58 #11 2 years ago

I did read that the 35 songs are 'just for now', and more will be added later (from WT). Whether they charge extra for the new ones or detect you've already paid and just let you get the new ones for free, I don't know. It might not be the ripoff that EG is attempting to accuse them of though.

    meh
both GH and RB like you to bend over so they can ram painful instruments up your ass.One day they will both go the way of the dance dance franchise.
  • grussbarbar #13 2 years ago

Hmmmm. 35 songs is a bit... underwhelming... I had hoped they managed to relicense a lot more songs by now. =( Maybe they did relicense more but just need more time to rework the tracks? Anyway, I do hope the rest of the songs will follow soon (especially the ones from Greatest Hits)

Also agree@Zomoniac. It's rare that a game let's you bring over content at all. And in Rock Band's and Guitar Hero's case, the content isn't even owned by the developers. They have to relicense the songs and then rework them for the new game mechanics and it's only reasonable that we pay a small fee for that. (Luckily they apparently secured the licensing for DLC to be brought over right from the beginning).
And what are we talking about? It's 10 cents per song which will actually get you new gameplay. It's not quite like paying 2,5 Euro for some Horse Armor in Oblivion. And if you don't think the 10 cents is worth it, don't pay it. Just keep the old disc and no harm done.

    @Zomoniac and grussbarbar

    +1 each.
  • Jonny5Alive7 #15 2 years ago

Not a great loss, GH:WT track listing is quite poor.
  • Rpt81 #16 2 years ago

Is my memory playing tricks on me, or didn't Activision originally say that GH5 DLC would be backwards compatible with World Tour, and that any game-play "innovations" they added to 5 would also be patched into WT as well?
  • Rpt81 #17 2 years ago

All of the downloadable content for Guitar Hero World Tour will be compatible, and Activision will even upgrade the old game to support the upgrades and enhancements in Guitar Hero 5.

That's what was initially said, I take it back about GH5 DLC working. I wonder if they'll back out of upgrading WT, though. Or charge for that as well.
  • Bazfrag #18 2 years ago

I see my thoughts were popular. I should say that its brilliant they charge you for song tranfer. Like it was also amazing when they charged for server migration in WoW, or to change your gamertag.

Microtransactions are the best thing to happen to gaming. If anything we are not charged enough for these services or content.
  • Sonic_D #19 2 years ago

35 out of 85? Pathetic, even if most of the GH:WT setlist is poor.
  • Bosthian #20 2 years ago

You can transfer any song you want??
  • daz_john_smith #21 2 years ago

Here's the list of songs that are transferable:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_in _Guitar_Hero_World_Tou
It looks like the only GHWT DLC not to be compatible is Hendrix, most likely cos of licensing issues and the GHWT Boss Battle.

Overall it seems like a bit of a half hearted attempt to implement Song Transfer and future DLC not being backwards compatible is now going to lose them a fair chunk of money IMO. I certainty can't purchase any new DLC until I get GH5 now, and I won't be doing that till it significantly drops in price or they implement a proper song transfer feature that cover fully covers, GHWT, Metallica and Greatest Hits.
