Frontlines demo on Live
City: demo. Mayor: you.
THQ and Kaos Studios' upcoming first-person shooter Frontlines: Fuel of War has popped up on Xbox Live today in demo form.
It will invade and occupy 1.69GB of your hard disk space before showing you a vision of a world ravaged by a global energy crisis, environmental decay, economic depression, and a lack of Wagon Wheels.
There's no immediate word on what the demo shows off specifically, but for more of an idea of what to expect from Frontlines overall, you might want to investigate Kristan's recent report from the frontlines of Frontlines.
His harrowing experience (at one point he had to walk from his hotel to a shop to buy a digital camera) includes information on the single-player campaign and the multiplayer, and a reminder that Kaos Studios formed out of the remnants of Trauma Studios - a former DICE satellite best known for excellent Battlefield 1942 mod Desert Combat.
So Frontlines could well be very good. You'll have a better idea once you've played the demo, eh?
Full version's due out on PC and 360 on 15th February with a PS3 version scheduled for April.

And the remote control bomb on wheels and mini-helicopter are wicked.

Gonna download this later - had to unplug the cable to let them fit my new bathroom stuff, I'd already delayed the convoy of stuff for Burnout: Paradise

If it's control scheme is within 75% of that of Battlefield 2: Modern Combat - usability- and intuitiveness-wise - then this is a must-buy for me and most of my 360-owning friends.
The addition of planes and drones, along with all the two-seat tactics for the armoured vehicles will more than make up for niggly controls.
Absolutely broken controls, on the other hand....

Also theres no issues for me either and can honestly say that I WAS looking out for them after reading this thread. Not one bit of tearing, NO texture pop-in (or build-in), virtually no jaggies and LOD is incredible!
Oh and whats wrong with the static art cutscenes? I liked them, suits the mood.
I'm sorry but I cant help but laugh at all these people who spend thousands on a 1080p thinking that its noticeably superior to a 1080i when in all honesty there either is no difference or where there is differences they are bad ones for people with 1080p's

I think your guy could move faster and smoother like cod4.
Did notice afew of the enemys appear right out of thin air, which does take away from the experience.
Think the mobile gatchets are good and if it is 64-player like it says in the videos, then this is already sold to me.

Downloading now, so will try out very soon.
On a totally unrelated side-note, the new DivX support is working very nicely for me on the 360 - streaming all of my Invader Zim episodes flawlessly! I'm so happy I could explode - "That happens sometimes".

I completely agree with you. The graphics are quite frankly shocking. How on earth isn't anyone else seeing that? The textures are low res and the detail isn't, well, there. The game is also pantaloons. The AI is abysmal and the whole thing is just very 'meh.'

Controls: These are fine. Different to other games in some ways and the up/down of the RC copter is a bit odd, but nothing too problematic.
Character/vehicle movement: This is what I suspect people mean when they bitch about the controls. It can feel as though the player is sliding around in an ice rink at times, with a bit of initial resistance when first moving forwards and a slight delay on just stopping. Think of your character as an air hockey puck. This they need to sort out. All other movement - reticule aiming, vehicle turning/velocity - is absolutely fine.
Reminds me of Battlefield 2 on PC, which is ok, but I think that for consoles, people would happily eschew greater realism for more fun - hence why I and all of my friends love Battlefield 2: Modern Combat; it's just more *fun* to play.
Graphics: A little bit of chugging happened when all the guys jump out of the transport at the beginning, but that was about it - unless I was in certain areas and there was wind blowing lots of particles about through the sunbeams (but this did not happen in all such areas, so I imagine it could be solved with optimisation).
Couldn't see any texture pop-in, or any tearing (and my screen tears like paper underwear whenever I play Dead Rising or Lost Planet) and the textures looked....functional.
They weren't horrendous by any means - just not up there with Gears and Bioshock. Oddly, seeing as it says it's Unreal Engine III technology. Face detail on characters was amazing, but you tend not to be looking at their faces in the actual game, so maybe they just need to concentrate on beefing up the general graphics. However, bearing in mind that this is most likely a multiplayer game with a tacked-on single player campaign (a la Battlefield 2: Modern Combat), I suspect the graphics are kept low to aid smoothness and reduce lag for the 32 player matches.
Gameplay: The normal weapons are just normal weapons, although the game betrayed it's Battlefield roots with the sniper rifle, by only being one hit kill from headshots. I don't know why, but the BF2:MC version - where it's death if you get shot anywhere - is far less realistic, granted, but infinitely more fun. Plus, I'd like to say that if you get hit in the chest by a huge sniper round, you won't be around much longer anyway, on account of lacking any internal chest organs. But that's just my personal preference.
The RC drones area fantastic addition - blowing up the tank with the C4 car was hilarious. Normally, a tank is the bane of the little infantry guy, so to take it out with something from Argos definitely flipped some vengeance switches. Using the copter to scout out buildings and enter through high up windows you couldn't even see through completely changed the scope of tactics for the game. Brilliant.
AI-wise - nothing to shout about. Again, it seems like the single player stuff is only there because it has to be, as it just screams "Multiplayer converted to fit storyline" - the enemy just sit in their hidey-holes, shooting at you until you kill them. They keep respawning until you take over the control point, at which point they start spawning at the next one - basically, the game treats them as dumb multiplayer bots.
Overall: If this is what the final game is going to be like, with just a little bit of tweaking, I'd probably give this game a miss, as I have other titles that fulfil my squad-based team multiplayer needs. However, if this is just a taster of what kind of ideas Kaos have and the player movement gets tidied up a bit and all sorts of balancing happens, this will be a must-buy.
It all depends on how indicative of the final product this demo was. I will also want to play a multiplayer at some point, because this game sure as hell shouldn't be judged purely on its tacked-on single player missions.

It was merely ok, I thought the graphics were extremely bland, actually bordering on being rather crap (Playing on a 50" HDTV, maybe I should sit more than 2 feet back from it) The controls seemed decent enough, although the collision detection seemed off occasionally, and some of the explosions were quite mighty and pretty.
And am I the only one who thought this was an RTS title? I sat there waiting for it to load and I was like ''What the fuckeroo?''
I can't see me buying it, unless it somehow manages to get 85%+ on Gamerankings.
