First FFXIV gameplay footage shown News

MMO PC News by Robert Purchese

19 August, 2009

Square Enix appears to be holding live demonstrations of Final Fantasy XIV Online at gamescom this week, as the first leaked in-game footage reveals.

Game Videos hosts the off-camera video (spotted by VG247), which shows a pretty girl/boy running round a field brandishing a bow.

He/she is joined by an armoured fighter who later stabs the dodos that the pair have been following. Combat is classic MMORPG, with definite rounds in which moves are made. It's very pretty, and complemented by equally accomplished animation.

Look out for our Final Fantasy XIV Online preview from gamescom later this week.

I'm actually sorta looking forward to this MMORPG. if they would only just announce no monthly fees then I would be all over it!

It looked really really nice until those dodos clipped straight through the player character during combat.

Then I just had to laugh.

Hopefully it'll be sorted by release - it'd be a shame to ruin all that gorgeous art with such awful belief-shattering glitches.

edit: seven down-thumbs? I wouldn't usually care, but this time: are you fucking blind?

I'd hate to think you were blind.

looks rather nice considering it's in an early stage of development still, shame the subscription cost is probably going to prevent me even giving it a try.

"to be fair there is a disclaimer saying its alpha build."

And that's fine. It was just a little jarring is all, especially against all that gorgeous other stuff.

Rumour has it the development is already pretty far along, with the release being held back due to the long delays of FF13.

They should drop the numerals and just call it Final Fantasy Online. Its less alienating to the majority. Sounds better too imo.

I really enjoyed FFXI up to a point but it just took too long to get anywere. If reports of this being a bit more solo-play friendly are true then I'm definitely interested.

Looks impressive :) I don't think I'll ever play an MMO though, because I really don't think I'd want to forgo playing any other games or watching any other TV series in order to focus on the MMO to get the most out of it :'(

@CitizenGeek: You'd rather watch TV than play a potentially great MMORPG where you can socialize with other people and possibly meet new friends? That's the main beef I have with Joe Bloggs and his attitude about gaming, they watch tons of television, and no-one so much as raises an eyebrow at that, but gamers get slagged off all the time, yet to our credit we are actually interacting with other people. And making choices and applying ourselves to SOMETHING at least. TV is the main pacifier of the masses.

Anyhow. Was a big FFXI fan in the day, and player, now I'm really pumped about FFXIV. Looking sweet.

The only problem i have had since playing MMO's is that single player RPG type games like Fallout and somewhat GTA are just so totaly boring to me... i just dont like games where i have to run about by myself killing the same looking monsters without anyone else to chat to or anyone else doing the same kinda thing

Plus it has saved me a hell of a lot of money :P i think i used to go through a new game every week before World of Warcraft ;)

years ago when i heard Square were doin an mmo i was really excited. i love the FF games.
but was really disappointed when i finally got my hands on FF11.
while im sure its got its fans, it just felt horrible to me.
horrible controls, horrible gameplay, leaving you dead in the water unless you had multiple friends playing too.
I can accept that for some its awesome. But here's hoping they can squeeze in a bit more of a broader appeal for those of us not hardcore enough to stick with the last game.

I don't think people are disagreeing with you, rather just expressing the opinion that you're perhaps given to pedantry and hyperbole =)

Looked very nice, but also incredibly slow battle-wise. I hope Square adjust the pacing of the game.

True, Warcraft does it too, but it's hardly known for it's hyper-realistic graphics. In a game that looks this good, it just seemed completely out of place for the Dodo attack to go right through him.
