First Epic Mickey details spilled News

Wii News by Robert Purchese

6 October, 2009

A source close to Disney has let slip the first details of Warren Spector's new Wii game, Epic Mickey, to Eurogamer.

The choice of platform, incidentally, boils down to Mickey's tools - paintbrushes, erasers, thinner, pencils and other artist tools - being mapped to Wii remote gestures.

But let's rewind a bit.

Epic Mickey is a tale about the 'forgotten' Disney stars: the rides, the characters, the lesser-known cartoons. When nobody any longer cares, they are cast into a dark void; a forgotten world of broken machines and bitter personalities - a bit like Sid's bedroom in Toy Story, but without the friendly furnishings.

This forgotten world is run by Oswald the Rabbit. He was Disney's first creation, made long before Mickey Mouse, and his jealousy of the newcomer has fermented for years. Now, finally, Oswald is ready for revenge.

He unleashes The Phantom Blot to wipe out Mickey and his cartoon world. The Blot pollutes the Disney universe with sticky black ink that makes colours run and fade (as seen on the Game Informer cover), so it's up to Mickey to restore peace and order. And this is where his tools come in.

Mickey has to draw and scribble his way through levels, mending broken bridges by applying the right colour paint or peering through walls after applying thinner. He can even clear rubble from his path by erasing parts of the world.

Our source told us Epic Mickey is a game about thinking and artwork - laterally considering your environment in order to overcome puzzles.

On top of that is a healthy dose of exploration, plus Mickey will be getting "his first makeover in years". "That's why no one's seen his face yet," our source explained, "But he's far more retro than you've seen him for years."

I still need to see screens, but the fact alone that Disney is willing to have someone portray their less popular characters as evil sounds amazing. And the Mickey face teasing is a marketing stunt, but a great one. I'm actually really curious about it.

Haha I like the storyline idea. I figured, obviously from the artwork, that Mickey would have to liven things up with his paintbrush. This could be a really good game if handled right!

Sounds very good. hopefully it's mainly pointer based as opposed to waggle based (don't mind a bit of waggling but the pointer is what can really make a Wii game stand out).

@CallousB: It does sounds like the pointer is the main use; I was worried that it might require waggle commands without WMP+ which can be hit and miss.

Sounds pretty...epic

It's weird that Mickey has been used a lot more in videogames in the last decade or two than in actual cartoons

(still has Gameboy Mickey mouse music in head)

Also with the new visualisation of Mickey we'll also get the new voice of Mickey now voiced by Bret Iwan in replacement to Wayne Allwine who passed away this year.

I doubt there would be enough earlier adopters of the PS3 wand and 360 natal to make it worth porting onto those HD systems. However I expect that if motion control does take off on those machines then there will be port/sequel. Of course we might have the next Wii by then too.

I wonder if it all sounds a little bit 'Luigi's Mansion'.

Still, I like the sound of the storyline, even if turns out to be a pale rip-off of My Little Pony The Movie.

NOTHING CAN STOP THE SMOOZE!!!

Sounds awesome, except:

"This is more retro than Mickey's looked in years."

Isn't that what "retro" actually means?

This is not quite as "epic" as I expected.

I was expecting cities to be in a post-nuclear state, with many characters mutated into horrible deformed beings, an evil government trying to gain control of the survivors, and conspiracies abound. Like a mix between Fallout and Deus Ex, except with Disney characters.

... alright, so maybe i was expecting too much.

Hidden, you already can. Oswald's on the Game Informer spread, staring down Mickey. Look by the gate.

We can only hope that the game does the awesome concept art justice. Too bad the lack of anti-aliasing might spoil the visuals a bit, but that's the Wii for ya. Still, I have faith in Warren Spector and his folks.

Very interesting, absoluely love the concept, it'll all very fitting and sounds just as the title says, epic.
Really hope this is a winner. (Was secretly honored to fight alongside Mickey in Kingdom Hearts II)

Okami meets Disney indeed. It makes sense to make it for the Wii, but that's also a pity because the game could be much better on the Xbox 360/PS3 and PC.
