Fifth Professor Layton game announced News

DS News by Oli Welsh

26 November, 2009

Level-5 has announced the fifth game in its wildly successful series of Professor Layton puzzle adventures. Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask will slot into Japanese DS consoles in autumn next year.

The announcement was made at a launch event for fourth game Professor Layton and the Devil's Flute, according to Andriasang. Europe and North America have yet to receive the third instlament, The Last Time Travel, but initial sequelPandora's Box came out earlier this year.

Miracle Mask is set in a magical town called Casino City which was created by the wish-granting Mask of the title. Level-5 showed artwork depicting a night-time circus parade with a giant inflatable clown. According to Famitsu, there will be significant changes to the game's systems.

If there was any doubt about Layton's popularity in Japan - a spin-off animated movie is due in December - Level-5 also hinted at a second movie and announced a promotion with McDonald's which would see exclusive puzzles available for download in the fast-food chain.

The series has sold almost eight million copies worldwide.

After almost smashing the frigging DS against the cat in frustration at the early puzzles of Curious Village, i am now enthralled with the game and can't wait to get on to Pandora's Box and the rest.

Getting extremely annoyed by the Fight Club BD advert splashing over the screen right enough....

What also needs mentioning is that Layton is the most popular in Europe, Curious Village sold as much here as in the US and Japan combined (Pandora's Box didn't have a lot of time to build up sales yet).

I hope this means more of an adventure game (examing the crime scene for example and handling objects, just like in the golden age of adventures), less contextless mini puzzles. That would be heaven.

Don't worry, they'll just rehash old ones and sell em as new. By the time this hits EU everyone won't even notice they are using puzzles form 1 again.

Ok seriously now. Stop announcing Layton games when we are only on the second one. Unless the puzzles become more interesting I'm actually not even sure how it's gotten to number 5 at all!

@Razz unfortunately we are very far behind Japan in the layton series, they are 3 games and an imminenet feature film ahead of us

If you speak japanese you could always jump ahead

Never watched CSI, hehe. And crime scene was only an example. Come on, you know what I mean, more Monkey Island and more Broken Sword etc. What I mean is: more freedom for solving the mysteries (not puzzles) by yourself instead of just clicking through the text when it comes to the story.

@Epilogue lol yeah tbh perhaps something revolving around solving a more lateral thinking puzzle to unlock more puzzles in the traditional style would actually be a good diversion from the current format.

for example a treasure chest stuck on a ledge, solve the problem of "how" to get it down and then solve a more traditional puzzle to open the chest.

@Caimbeul yes thats correct, we are nearly 3 games behind the japanese, due to it all needing to be translated

The fifth game is the final one, right? Or is there potential for more?

Also, I love how EG constantly make a point of how far behind Europe and the US are in the series, every time there's a bit of news about Professor Layton! It is annoying, but it's a reasonably text heavy game and the translations are very good. Although some of the puzzles suffer in the clarity department, they certainly don't bodge the translation.

The good thing is that we have three more Laytons to look forward to. The voice acting is (barring the one exception we all well know and loathe) nothing short of superb, I love it :).
