Europe to get Sniper Ghost Warrior

Polish marksman sim for 360 and PC.

Polish outfit City Interactive has announced that it will release its debut FPS, Sniper Ghost Warrior, for 360 and PC in Europe in June.

The game "offers an incredible insight into the danger-filled world of the military marksman," it says here. It's set on a fictional South American island, with the player cast as an elite commando tasked with ending a military coup by assassinating the General at its head. You'll be making your way through jungle to a botched assault at an old refinery, and then on to oil rigs, a mine and ruins.

Realism in the shooting, if not the plot, is the key to Sniper Ghost Warrior. The ballistic system accounts for distance, fall-off in the bullet trajectory, wind direction and so on, and you must manage the sniper's breathing while shooting. You have squad members to use as spotters, feeding back the positions of your targets.

There'll be 16-player multiplayer, too, and a "bullet cam" offering close-ups when you take your mark down.

    Now all those useless snipers in Bad Company 2 can play out their Tom Berenger fantasies without annoying anyone else.
  • 00.00.01 #2 2 years ago

    Meh...a game for the niche-market of 'tactical-waiting'...Maybe a good idea for al the lazy campers out there. So they can discover for themselves that snipers are having a hard time when there's no easy picking off the cool run&gun gamers.
    Go campers, get this game!
    You'll love it.

    Sniping in MP games is gay, but i quite fancy a leisurely game with proper sniping. Hope this is good.

    This'll be funny on the 360, people desparately trying to aim precisely with that stupid little stick.

    Long live the mouse!

    @PearOfAnguish
    It's all too easy to look at snipers from the perspective of them being the camping gits on the other team killing you from afar and ignore the perspective of those on your team who are actually helping you win battles. Who do you think is spotting all those enemies you pick off so easily because they show up on your map? Who is taking down the tank you were pinned down by and who do you think is taking out the opposition snipers?

    Yeah you can camp as a sniper, you'd be a pretty shit one and die a hell of a lot though. A good sniper is as skillful as a good run and gunner and just as useful to the team.
  • kiroquai #18 2 years ago

    I don't think he was necessarily saying all snipers are useless on BC2 (in fact, if you end up on a team with people who don't know how to use them properly you really, really notice it when you keep getting your arse kicked on the front line), more that some people just select recon, sit in a random place and shoot people at random rather than keep M-Com stations covered, spot enemies and the like.
  • metalangel #19 2 years ago

    @DrDamn: The UAV, an engineer with a Carl Gustav, me.
  • DrDamn #20 2 years ago

    @kiroquai
    That's nothing to do with snipers as a class - that's a crap player. You get crap engineers, crap assault, crap support. A game like this is more likely to attract the good snipers imo.

    @metalangel
    Of course it is, all the time. Even when the UAV is destroyed it's still spotting stuff for you. It also spots stuff for you when you are defending too doesn't it?
  • Amgzone #21 2 years ago

    Sounds ...interesting.
  • Apostle #22 2 years ago

    Maybe Actibastards could pick this up, adding the CoD name would surely enable it to sell bucket-loads?

    Useless snipers, I said. Useless snipers do not do any of these things.
  • darleysam #24 2 years ago

    Silly name, I fear a possible "hour of victory" or "Conflict: denied ops" kind of title, but for now I like the premise and will pay this attention when more news crops up.
  • chrisola #25 2 years ago

    the Modern Warfare sniper ghillie suit level was brilliant, if this can capture the feel of that level and make a game out if, it could be good.

  • metalangel #26 2 years ago

    @DrDamn: When another game is lost because I got to a crucial capture point but was killed, I'm really glad you were hiding in a bush two miles away racking up spotter points by telling me four guys and a tank were coming instead of down there with me trying to accomplish the actual objective.
  • DrDamn #27 2 years ago

    @metalangel
    Yep - your right, it would have been so much better if everyone died from the attack not knowing it was coming. Being up on the hill, pointing them out on the radar and taking out the tank before it got to you would have been stupid I see that now. We could then mount another assault from all the way back at our base rather than a forward position that a good sniper on your squad would have taken - *so* much better.

    Your complaints have nothing to do with snipers and everything to do with crap players. A winning team needs balance and someone good in a sniper role is part of that - whether you like the role or not. There is a problem if too many people are snipers, but that is true of any role.
  • PearOfAnguish #28 2 years ago

    Use motion mines, then. You can actually get close to the objective and still help identify enemies. Recons who get up close with the G3 or something and lob motion mines are usually far more useful to their team than the guy taking pot shots half a map away.
  • Goffee #29 2 years ago

    How do you have 16 snipers in a single game - that's just silly, unless OBL is the target, in which case fair dos.
  • DrDamn #30 2 years ago

    @PearsOfAnguish
    Yeah, that's just another way the class can be useful though, not necessarily what should be doing all the time.

    Consider this another way ... if a player is useless as a Sniper then why do you think they would be any better as another class? On Rush attack just as much harm to the team can be done by a poor assault player constantly rushing in by themselves and using up all the respawns by dying all the time.
  • darleysam #31 2 years ago

    So the anti-sniper argument (for a completely different game that's not being discussed in the news article) is that "they kill me and it's not fair".

    Okay, I'm sure I'll take that into consideration as I line up my next shot.
  • PearOfAnguish #32 2 years ago

    I'd rather they were trying instead of doing nothing, many of them don't even bother to spot.

    Maybe you should get in there and give it a go yourself instead of hiding in a bush eh? ;)

  • kangarootoo #33 2 years ago

    "Sniper Ghost Warrior Pirate Ninja Zombie Robot Babe" surely?
  • kangarootoo #34 2 years ago

    @metalangel

    If someone gives you advance warning that a tank and 4 guys are coming your way, and you still get killed (perhaps stubbornly trying to hold a capture point against clearly overwhelming odds), you are doing something wrong.

    What we seem to be establishing here (though people are fighting hard to avoid agreeing on it) is that rubbish players are rubbish.

    A sniper that sits in one spot all day looking for easy infrequent kills is rubbish. A medic that rushes in to battle and gets killed just when everyone else could do with some support is rubbish. A bombadier that panics and blows up his team mates is rubbish. I could go on.

    The sniper class is ace fun to play and if played right can tip the balance of a map. If its badly played, it won't do the latter at the very least. I'm pretty sure we all agree on that... so stop acting like we don't! :)
  • kangarootoo #35 2 years ago

    @PearOfAnguish

    What is a motion mine? That sounds pretty title specific. I don't recall any motion mines in BF1943 (a game where a decent PROPERLY USED sniper could easily tip the balance for a squad).
  • BobsUncle #36 2 years ago

    @PearOfAnguish, I agree with DrDamn, a shit player is a shit player, no matter the class.

    The number of times I look at assault players and ask for ammo and they just ignore me then run off and get killed is astounding, the one job they have is to drop ammo and half of them don't even do that. Or a medic who won't try reviving, he just likes the big machine gun..

    At least the sniper hidden out the way isn't wasting spawn tickets!
  • PearOfAnguish #37 2 years ago

    The motion mine is thrown like a grenade and displays all enemies in the area around the mine.

    I never said all snipers are pointless, only the useless ones.
  • kangarootoo #38 2 years ago

    @PearOfAnguish

    "I never said all snipers are pointless, only the useless ones."

    I know. In the made up words of Rick James "I got carried away, I was having too much fun".
  • DrDamn #39 2 years ago

    @PearsOfAnguish
    "Maybe you should get in there and give it a go yourself instead of hiding in a bush eh? ;) "

    First class I maxed out was Assault. I'm currently working on Engineer and Recon. I'm getting on a bit in years so my reactions aren't what they were, as run'and'gun I am near useless. My skills are better suited to longer range exchanges.

    Snipers tend to get a bad rap because the nature of the play means you don't see what they are doing to help. So they are easy targets for those getting there asses kicked on the front line. Heaven forbid they contemplate that the reason they are getting their ass kicked is because the other team are better than them ;)
  • PearOfAnguish #40 2 years ago

    You can see what they are doing to help because the markers from their spotting should be showing up constantly. Problem is all too often there are 5 or 6 snipers sat on a hill and a mysterious lack of enemy markers, meaning they're not doing any spotting.
  • DrDamn #41 2 years ago

    @PearsOfAnguish
    Surely there are all the markers from people on the front line too? Spotting is not just for snipers. What about all the people you yourself have helped spot for the snipers? ;)
  • OllyJ #42 2 years ago

    ooh Refinery, Oil Rig, Mine AND ruins!
  • PearOfAnguish #43 2 years ago

    "What about all the people you yourself have helped spot for the snipers?"

    They're lying on the ground riddled with bullets.
  • metalangel #44 2 years ago

    @kangarootoo: you're right, I'm doing the wrong thing by not just quitting that game and joining a different one where the rest of my team aren't all snipers and I'm the only guy trying to actually capture points and win.

    @DrDamn: At least a crappy player on the front line will distract the enemy from bombing an MC or capturing a control point sooner. And hey, they might get tired of get killed and start shooting back! Whereas a crappy sniper will happily sit for the entire game in his shrubbery and accomplish nothing apart from getting a few points closer to a bronze star for his current rifle.

    @PearofAnguish: It's kinda hard to hit BACK when you're trying to shoot another n00b's head off! You got more points for that than for just spotting them! :p

    ANYWAY the point I think we've all been trying to make is that the problem isn't individual snipers so much as entire teams of them. It's not fun for either side - the sniper-ridden team finds themselves without support when they try to accomplish objectives while the other side is constantly being shot. By all means a few snipers are very valuable, and a well placed artillery strike here, a well-timed spot there can make a lot of difference. But when everyone decides they're going to be that hero who'll do those things, there's nobody left to actually win the round and so you have Rush maps where the attackers are just stalled because of ten guys on the team, three are actually going after the MCs and the rest are staying back and sniping.

    So, to lighten the mood, enjoy this (safe for work) comic:

    It's UT2004, but it all pretty much applies to BFBC2... and certainly does not in anyway reflect the way snipers behave. ;)

    Think I'll wait for Elite Large Breasted Lesbian Sniper Ghost Warrior Pirate Zombie Ninja 2.
  • barchetta #46 2 years ago

    Did Sniper Elite ever work properly on the 360 (via b.c.?). I remember a few users reporting lockups etc but having spotted it in my local market my interest has been piqued once more.
  • Chupakun #47 2 years ago

    Sounds just like Sniper Elite. That was a very decent game, although the intro movie was a bit cheesy.
  • Gammerz #48 2 years ago

    I'll keep my sights on this one!
  • valli #49 2 years ago

    xX_5N1P3R420GH057_Xx with his M95, mortar strike, 12x zoom and spotting scope can fuck off to this game right now. :)
  • YourMessageHere #50 2 years ago

    I loved the sniping in Sniper Elite. The immersion breaking instant-switch weapons, and interminable bits which required you to lug an MG42 (that you apparently fired one-handed), 500 rounds of ammo, five medkits and 10 grenades around ruined it though. A game that's about sniping, which lets you snipe, and about stealth, whcih actually lets you be stealthy, unlike Sniper Elite, would be highly welcome.

    Oh, and cancel MP that's not 2-player co-op, 2-player sniper duelling or 2-vs-2 sniper and spotter teamplay. 16 player MP belongs in this about as much as it does in Chess.

    And the name is appalling.

    If this has 2 man co-op, loads of sneaking and missions that revolve around remaining hidden and then getting one perfect kill, I'm sold.

    Yes, i like slow, tense games. especially with a friend.

    Also, YourMessageHere, spotter + sniper team vs another would rock.

    OR make it like counter-ops in PD! Hunt the sniper team....kill the mercs!

    (Yes, I want Splinter Cell gameplay back ;( )
