Out in 2010, unbelievably.

Update: As one probably should have expected (sorry), FFXIV Online is due out for PS3 and PC, not just PS3 - and will receive a "simultaneous global release with language support in Japanese, English, French and German". It's got FFIX and XI's director, Nobuaki Komoto, FFXII's art director and musician Nobuo Uematsu on it, too.

Original story: Sony America has unveiled Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIV Online at its E3 conference and said it will be PS3-exclusive.

Like Rockstar's Agent, there was no word on the terms of exclusivity, but SCEA boss Jack Tretton said, "PS3 will be the only console you'll be able to play Final Fantasy XIV on when it launches in 2010."

In a brief demo - mostly CG by the looks of it - we had oblique references to forgotten pages of eternity, mighty gods and "her name is Eorzea", plus sword fighting, jellyfish things, ships, dragons, aerial battles in phallic airships with wings, cliffs, and a chocobo.

"So, that one didn't leak, huh?"

ff11 was quite bad, so much that square even allowed to go to 360.
and even then no one bought it.
it remains to be seen if this will be killer app exclusive.

will you have to pay an extra subscription for this aswell ??!

It can't be... MMOs are not mainstream (well except for WoW) and there are plenty on the market. This can make some good money... but it won't be a killer app. It is nice to have an MMO on a console... good for the portfolio.

The graphics style looked like a throwback to another time. It reminded me more of FF4 than FF7, which is a really good thing.

Definitely sounds better than FF13, though a completely other (online) game.

My only issue with the title is with Square's insistence on making it part of the main numbered series just like 11. No doubt there will be queues of misinformed gamers who will be disappointed with their purchase. Reminds me of when I used to work at Gamestation, you'd be amazed at how many people fail to research what they buy, let alone listen to the advice of a shop assistant.

Nobody plays 11, nobody will play 14. Especially when limited by platform. And once the timed exclusivity runs out, everyone will already have left, crippling its chances. NEXT!

What? I know this is a MMO game, but we haven't even got to play Final Fantasy XIII or Final Fantasy XIII Versus and we are supposed to be excited for this.

Lot's of people are saying Square are losing their touch and I think we need to see how good the two aforementioned Final Fantasy games are before we can decide whether this will be good at all. If FFXIII and Versus turn out to be anything like most recent Square-Enix games they won't be anything special.

ffxi was fun, i know ppl cry if they see no blinking question marks above NPCs and such. I will definetly get that awesome peace and hope SE will keep the storylines up.

FF 11 is still going strong to this day. Its extremely addictive gameplay has made it last through the years.

Its one of the longest running MMOs. This console exclusive MMO could attract many more people aswell as the FF11 players.

Could be massive.

Despite what many of you may say FFXI is still going strong. It still has a large player base. Not as large as World of Warcraft but then a lot of think that's as gash as you think FFXI is. If you aren't interested in FFXI or FFXIV then fair enough but quit the trolling.

It's funny that if FFXIV was on 360 it would be the last nail in the PS3's apparent coffin, but because it's a PS3 exclusive, it's boring and no one play the other online FF (despite the fact it's the second busiest MMO after 7 years going).

FFXI is a million times the game WoW could ever be, half of you must be 3shitty fanboys / Warcrap lovers? FFXI STILL has atleast 500k active subscribers and is still very much alive. Warcrap and Warhammer, all these cliche MMO's that everyone's so into can't hold my attention for more than 5 minutes. FFXIV will be great, and exclusively on the PS3 and PC thank god, I never understood why they took XI in microshafts direction anyways.

No offense meant towards WoW in general, but it's full of 12 year olds. I'm hoping that Final Fantasy 14 will actually have more mature players but then again since every mom has a Visa these days it's impossible. FFXIII. Let's hope that the beta will require the applicants to be over 18, so at least some of them will find bugs rather than whine because their FPS drops below 30 geez ...

ffxi just hit 2mil+ subscribers.. not as much as wow obviously. but its also harder than wow, and personally i like it better.

you can use only controller for ffxi on ps2 and 360.. but a keyboard is very helpful. i'm gonna assume ffxiv will be the same.
