Duke 3D, CivRev on iPhone now News

iPhone News by Robert Purchese

11 August, 2009

iPhone and iPod Touch owners can now download Duke Nukem 3D and Civilization Revolution from the App Store.

Duke Nukem 3D costs £1.79 and brings the potty-mouthed hero of 1991 back to life. The controls appear to be broken, sadly, but 3D Realms bigwig George Broussard is talking to the developer about getting them fixed.

Civilization Revolution costs £2.99 and appears stuff a wide range of features onto the Apple devices.

Non-3G devices might struggle a bit, but there's a free trial to test the game out with.

Duke 3d has problems with the controls, but I think they maybe updating. It looks good though and the price of 1.79 is supposedly an introductory price.

I sent a link to this to someone at my work who I know has a Civ addiction. Moments later he was swearing at me while simultaneously browsing his way to the "Purchase" button. This morning he comes in complaining that he lost four hours last night. Sounds quite potent really. I still don't get it though.

Is it basically a copy of the DS version? That was pretty much feature complete also (maybe even more so)

Civ Rev rules !
I bought it yesterday and have already played it for two hours on the train today.
Looks and plays like the Xbox 360 version and is also as complex.
As far as I am concerned, this is the best iPhone game yet and a terrific value !

Steer well clear of Duke until they've fixed the controls, it's totally unplayable at present. It's hard to understand why they'd release it in that state. The engine looks pretty decent though, not too sluggish and seems to be doing a bit of filtering to smooth out the old pixels.

Why do so many developers rush a first release onto the crApp Store and risk alienating customers when their game gets plenty of 1 star ratings?

It does NOT look like the 360 version, plays almost as well as it. But does not look like it at all, it looks like a much less detailed version of it, which is what it is.

Will probably get CivRev. If it is indeed as complete as the console versions, GBP 3 is terrific value.

On a side note, anyone here played the iPhone version of Monkey Island? If so, is it any good? Tempted to get it.

iPhone Monkey Island is indeed good. But the way it uses the touchscreen like a laptop touchpad to move the cursor indirectly is a little more awkward than one would like it to be. And some of the gorgeousness of the new graphics have been lost when they've been scaled down from the Xbox version, but it's still a damn fine graphic adventure.

I'm off to download civ now.

Duke 3d looks like its based on the opengl port that was done for it, hence why it looks cleaner than it used to in its original form on PC. Definite slow-down though on 3G, should run sweet on 3Gs. Damn my 18 month contract. will wait for the next iphone iteration

FYI - Just looking at the CivRev App page now and it states "48 HOUR SALE (regular price $9.99)"

Anyone know if this is true? if so, $10 seems a bit steep for an iPhone game

BTW, the above describes what I see through the Spanish App page.

Don't let the Lite version of Civ Rev keep you from buying the game. It's sluggish, and laggy, and annoying as hell. The full version runs a gazillion times better on my 2nd gen Touch than the Lite version, for some reason.

Bought it last night, played as Roman on iPhone and didnt go to bed until 2 30 am and got up at 6 30 am swearing at iPhone and Civ Rev!

Bliss of great gaming moments!

Of course already Civ on DS but doesnt beat the fact you can play pretty good Civ on your mobile, its not as featured as consoles and much weaker than PC iteration. BUT great to state your strategy gaming addiction on the move or on the loo!

You're right mate. The demo was unresponsive on my 1st gen touch, but the actual game runs well. I have only played for half hour though. Loved it

Controls definitely borked on Duke3D. But the price point is worth it, and I trust they will fix the controls. It won't be difficult, it is just the analogue setting actually works more like a digital one and becomes unusable in frantic moments.

Runs great on a 3GS. At points a little too fast, easily over 60fps at points, and never seems to drop below it.

Just completed the first game of Civ Rev! Best game on the iPhone. Great use of controls - I just wish I could order units to go to a specific city without having to scroll all over the map.
