Dante's Inferno similar to God of War News

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
News by Robert Purchese

11 February, 2009

The first viewings of Dante's Inferno suggest the action adventure will be very similar to God of War.

The button mappings are almost identical, according to the latest issue of PSM3 magazine, and enemies can be smashed into the air and juggled around using simple combos that mix light and heavy attacks.

Magical abilities will also feature, and fallen enemies will spill health and magic orbs that replenish respective status bars.

Quick-Time Events make an appearance too, we're told, and will allow the sort of impressive battle sequences we're used to: in this case a house-sized monster can be scaled and ridden around like something out of the circus.

But what developer EA Redwood Shores (Dead Space) hopes will make Dante's Inferno different is the setting: a contemporary conception of purgatory and hell, which, in this case, will spout twisted monstrosities and unpleasant and eerie scenes-a-plenty.

And with Dead Space as a reference point, our hopes are high.

Platforms and release dates are still to be confirmed. But, what this being a PS3 preview, we can safely speculate on an Xbox 360 counterpart and a PC accompaniment.

We'll be bringing you our lengthy and in-depth thoughts on Dante's Inferno soon.

So bugger all to do with the reference material then?

In a way I'm pleased. A multi format God Of War would be nice... and Dead Space was superb.

A good God of War rip-off should still be a good game. I'll be keeping an eye on this one.

Agh! I hate QTE events!

Does nothing for the gameplay at all, just becomes an task to learn the right buttons at the right time with no skill involved. And yes, you can add GOW to that list and it ruined the POP: Two Thrones with that crap.

However, as its the team behind Dead Space and that game rocked. Plus its set in Hell will is also cool. I shall be keeping watch on this

It does look good. Who cares if it borrows from God Of War? That one also copies a lot of ideas from Devil May Cry and that never stopped anyone from enjoying either...

This might be better than GOW3. I mean Dead Space was/is incredible.

Just make Conan 2 with tweaks to the battle system and I'll be good.

The potential is there for this game to be great, but it'll have to shine as it is a very crowded genre. If it's going to closely copy GoW it'll have to be fucking good as GoWII was superb and no doubt #3 will kick arse when it is released this year (or next, I reckon).

"7 out of 10 written all over it"

Well given how little we know about it, it must be written in very small letters.

I'll second that, Conan was superb. The variation between weapon types was very well pronounced, and you actually had to use different configurations for certain enemy types, rather than all weapons funtioning the same but looking slightly different.

I especially liked the skill progression system.

The last boss made me gurn with anger though, quite a lot.

Do you get paid for typing such shite? I can't think why anyone would type what you did without some recompense.

Aaah - The last bossfight in Conan. Took more than a few tries that one. Not that hard once you get the pattern/rythm but one of the most frustrating boss battles out there no doubth.

Yuck. Quick Time Events. The reason I gave up God of War on the PSP during the first level.

Stupid idiotic things.

Using God of War as inspiration is no bad thing, but coming close to the excellent design in both GoW I & II (and, mostly likely, III) will be very difficult.

In any case, after the huge epic fail of Ninja Gaiden 2, I just hope that a game like this can help fill the hole in PS3/360's library for solid action games. Devil May Cry 4, Heavenly Sword and Ninja Gaiden 2 do the genre no favours at all.

So I'm guessing this actually won't bare any resemblance whatsoever to the actual Dante's Inferno? :(

@Ducklord: I'd say that's a fair summation. But then the satirising of the foibles of the clergy in the Middle Ages might be lost on the Need for Speed demographic. This game could be quite fun, but will have no brain. Boss fight with Satan trapped up to his waist in ice will be QTE hell (no pun intended)...

Dante's Inferno has fuck all to do with Purgatory (that would be Dante's Purgatorio). Also, Purgatory would be pretty shit for a game, since it comes after Hell, and it's not filled with demons.

Of course, I imagine they're completely ignoring that anyway.

So why not just throw in Paradiso and have Dante fighting angels/God?
