Crysis 2 playable entirely in 3D

Including multiplayer.

Crytek's upcoming first-person shooter Crysis 2 will be playable entirely in 3D.

That's according to Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli, who spoke to USA Today ahead of E3 this week.

"The success of 3D movies like Avatar and the introduction of 3D TVs from the hardware manufacturers tells us that this is the next big movement in entertainment, much like HD was years ago," Yerli said.

"For games especially, 3D gives gamers an increased level of immersion, which can enhance an intense experience like Crysis 2."

According to the USA Today piece, the game will be fully 3D on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 and even multiplayer content will be in 3D.

With that said, those of us who haven't bought a 3D TV or monitor will be able to play it all in old-school 2D instead.

Right, I better re-mortgage my home so's I can dump £2000 on a 3D tv and another £50 on some glasses to play a mediocre shooter that looks pretty.
  • glottis0 #3 2 years ago

@LHH - Have you played it? That's not a loaded question, I'm just interested. For me, the biggest surprise about Crysis was not the graphics but the fact that it played fantastically...I've not met many people that thought it was mediocre or bad to be honest, except for those that assumed it was all aesthetics over gameplay and never picked it up.

What did everyone else think? Am I alone in loving it?
  • IneptPercy #4 2 years ago

As many others I can't help but look at think its got too much life left before I 'upgrade'.

Will wait as the first wave of most things if never the cheapest or best anyway.
  • bad09 #5 2 years ago

    Dear 3D,

Please hurry up and go away again, and please stop trying to be the next awesome thing every few decades most of us just do not care.

    Kind regards,

Meh,another core game ruined by 3D gimmick.
  • LHH #7 2 years ago

I'd happily wait until it's affordable but like HDTVs and PS3 it might be a few years.

Edit - if they really want to push the tech they might as well just support the porn industry. That'll drive sales.

so processing that could be better spent making more expansive environments, better graphics, better draw distance etc is wasted on rendering twice as many frames.

"so processing that could be better spent making more expansive environments, better graphics, better draw distance etc is wasted on rendering twice as many frames."

This. 3D comes at a price, and it's too steep.
  • Widge #10 2 years ago

I love 3D, bring it on. I reckon the application of this could be really good, properly immersive. Fuck all the haters playing games on their 4:3 mono black and white TVs.
  • MerricK #11 2 years ago

Dont care for 3D. I care for FULL HD games!!
  • IronCladChicken #12 2 years ago

Maybe 3D will be as big as Blu-Ray?
  • Lachsgeruch #13 2 years ago

So... this is a first person shooter in a three-dimensional virtual space.. That's 1x 3D, with these fancy new TVs/Goggles (btw they do nothing!), that's 2x 3D - is this 6D than? Or is it 3D²?

For all I care, I can buy some plants and place them around my TV, get some blade of grass and glue them to my glasses. Because, that's all "3D Tech" does. We already perceive 3D environments, even on a 2D surface. All hail to the neocortex!

    A 3D porn game using Natal/Kinect
  • dubdivision #15 2 years ago

My 22" 3D monitor cost £200 and came with two free pairs of "3d specs" and is also compatible with the "Read D" 3d specs from the cinema.

The extra 3D perception will find some great new features in games to come.

Another one dies on the altar of 3D.

glottis0: "What did everyone else think? Am I alone in loving it?"

I thought it was an OK shooter. Nothing special. Aside from being very pretty, of course.
Played through it once, then uninstalled and never looked back.

I read this news and was like "What, I don't remember there being any 2D parts in Crysis before?"

Then i realised what this was on about ... i forgot all about the gimmick 3D there, and tried to wrack my brain for the 2D side-scrolling part of Crysis.
  • CHAZBIGPOTATO #19 2 years ago

You know I was about to pour some water down the back of my Sony trinitron which the wife is adamant we will not replace until it breaks.
But on the balance of things its probably wise to hold out until 3d tvs are affordable and not bother wasting money on an HD ready one.

Am I the only one sick and fed up of this push for 3D?

When console and PC hardware, including all HDTVs and displays, are capable of handling 3D with no graphical/framerate compromises then make a push for it but not before then. I can't help thinking that this has come too soon, just when people have only just bought their first non-3D HDTVs and won't be in any rush to buy another any time soon, certainly not at the prices they currently sell for. Then you need 3D glasses for everyone who wants to watch/play and they ain't cheap either.

I can see 3D games and movies at home being a very niche market for years to come personally.
  • Ryze #21 2 years ago

Standard '3D TV' thread cut/paste comment:

Most people aren't taking into account that the next consoles will need to have monster GPUs to render 1080p/60 3D. If Sony / Microsoft aim for this, then there'll be little chance of them taking a 'Wii-like' technology sidestep to save costs.

3D works best when V-sync'd, so this BODES VERY WELL for 2D framerates and elimination / minimising of tearing in the next gen, for those who DON'T upgrade their TV sets.

It'll be near impossible to create a game that simply doesn't work for those without 3D displays, so calm the nonsensical hate, children.

We'll all benefit from the push to 3D.
  • Feanor #22 2 years ago

If the next HD consoles are still 2-3 years off, I think GPUs that can do 1080p/60 3D will be affordable.
  • Buran #23 2 years ago

Crysis and Warhead can currently be played at 3D: both look worse in 3D since the problems with the particles effects, not to mention that the framerrate is cut to 1/2 in 3D.

I like more the game in 2D.
  • muscleblade #24 2 years ago

If this game is truly great i migt buy a 3D telly for it. It needs be really good though. I already have two 1080P TVs and one of them is a LED TV.
  • makariel #25 2 years ago

3D in multiplayer could be tricky, since it gives the players in 3D an advantage over 2D. Depth perception ftw!
  • jambo74 #26 2 years ago

I live in 3D - so a TV is nothing...
  • dave-on #27 2 years ago

Much like HD was years ago? More like 2-3 years ago. These companies must be smokin something good if they think we are all dying to upgrade again every time they think up a new gimmick. Here's something for game devs to think about. MAKE GOOD GAMES AND WE WILL BUY THEM. We don't need 3D for that, thanks.
  • Buran #28 2 years ago

@makariel: is just the opposite. Think about how players disable the graphical details in games as Quake or UT to enhance the chances to recognize faster their targets; 3D only makes the enemy harder to find in the the battlefield environment. Also, cuts your framerrate in 1/2.
  • Svalbaard #29 2 years ago

    Yaaaaaaawn.

3D? That's the next toy to be hyped is it? No doubt to be used to distract consumers from the lack of gameplay and originality in this tedious ongoing plethora of first person shooters such as Crysis.
  • cmcg1995 #30 2 years ago

bloody brilliant... needed a new tv.. and comet had 3d one with 3 bundled sets of glasses and the blu ray player capable of 3d for just about a grand... figured i may as well get that instead of having to replace it when 3d takes off properly. And now I find out my xbox supports 3d... brill :D
