Broken Sword for iPhone released

Pick up the Director's Cut for £3.99.

Revolution Software has released Broken Sword: The Director's Cut for iPhone and iPod touch.

Just like in the old days, the game sees Nico Collard and George Stobbard getting up to all sorts of adventures involving the Knights Templar. There are new cut-scenes and animations by comic book artist Dave Gibbons, plus a context-sensitive help system to aid thickies. On top of all that you get extra content which is said to increase the playtime of the original by around 20 per cent.

"I am very proud that the game, and indeed the whole series, has maintained such a loyal following," said Revolution boss Charles Cecil.

"Since the launch of iPhone we have been bombarded with requests from fans to produce an app and the innovative Multi-Touch user interface is perfect for an adventure game - it really works very well."

Broken Sword: The Director's Cut is priced at £3.99.

Good. Hope EG run a review.

Great to see this rise of old click style adventures. More of them.

I agree that it's good to see old click style adventure games on this new platform.

    What next though? LucasArts?

I'm presuming this the same as the DS version, that came out 10 months and is currently £8! Listen up, Sony this is how you digital download pricing.

    Yay for full speech!

It's pretty much like the DS version, except it's got the same interface that the iPhone version of Beneath a Steel Sky has. As that interface is absolutely genius, that's a really good thing!

Anyone got it? Marks out of 10?
  • banjo21 #7 2 years ago

Great game on Wii so no reason to suspect it wont be on iphone.
More suited to iphone usage i think ie. haircut queue and other such ten minute blanks in life.

Revolution have been quite open about how well the iPhone is working for them as a platform. BaSS sold really well and I expect this will do even better, as unlike BaSS the Broken Sword games aren't freeware. It'll probably drop to £2.99 in a couple of weeks (because BaSS did) but I don't mind paying the extra quid if it keeps Revolution pumping out these quality adventure games on a platform that suits them so well, it's hard to believe they weren't designed for it from the ground up. They've as-near-as-dammit confirmed that the iPhone will get a new, original Steel Sky sequel if their iPhone games sell well: I feel like they're bribing me to buy their games, but I don't mind if we get BaSS 2!

It's basically the DS game (which still costs at least twice as much as this version), but imo the graphics look neater. If you like point-and-click adventures you really should have both this and BaSS on your phone. Inherit the Earth and the two Simon the Sorcerer games are also very good, but a bit more fiddly than Revolution's silky interface.

Shame the Flight of the Amazon Queen port was so poor compared to BaSS and BS, but it was the first attempt.

Bought the remake for Ds day 1, presume this will be much the same, top stuff, espc for that price.

    AMAZING GAME!

Lets just hope it loads faster than the Playstation CD-ROM version!

Oh, and does the app have full voice acting?

any reviews online? I loved these games but frankly, after buying Monkey Island and barely touching it I'm not convinced that this sort of game is something I can play on my phone for a few minutes here and there. It jsut doesn;t seem right for me at the moment. /goes back to Sword and Poker
  • clearblue #12 2 years ago

BaSS was perfect for 10 minute play sessions here and there. Monkey Island was rubbish in comparison- clumsy controls sealed its fate for me. I've got high hopes for this though...

    @ DB2k

I tried Monkey Island and didn't get on with it, but BaSS is much better. It's got a better structure for the platform and the control system is infinitely better than the badly implemented MI one.

Give BaSS a go - or read some reviews of it at least - and that'll give you a better idea how this will be.

    It's great. Geditgeditgedit :o)

if i hadnt already completed this on psone and pc numerous times.. i'd be getting this.

Find it funny that the original had to run from cd's, and this runs on a phone!
  • smelly #18 2 years ago

For those asking if it's good. Yes it is, for a non-lucasarts adventure its very good and one of the few games of its ilk i could complete without a walkthrough.

The puzzles ARE hard, but also logical - so you get them eventually.. Not your usual sierra affair where it's just random stuff no-one would get, unless they're just randomly trying everything with everything.

Is there any way to back up your save game progress. I'm just thinking if anything happens to my phone when I'm half way through the game would an iTunes sync restore the same game as well as the game? Or, if I want to take it off my phone and come back to it later will the file on my PC contain my save position? (I guess this is relevant to all iPhone games).
  • Jelly_Head #21 2 years ago

@smelly - this version is different to the original PSOne/PC game with additional story and puzzles.

@Oceadge - yes, of course. I think this is a mandatory requirement for iPhone games anyway, but Broken Sword has 7 save slots and you can name them whatever you like.

I would like to see the following LucasArts games released for the iPhone,

Sam & Max Hit The Road

Day of the Tentacle (the time travelling puzzles in this were ingenious)

Full Throttle

The Dig (not brilliant, but nice music and story)

... but with a much better control mechanism than the one in Monkey Island... one like the control system in Broken Sword would be nice.
