BioShock 2 set seven years later?

Teaser site: Big Daddy kidnaps kid.

A new teaser site for BioShock 2 hints that the game is set seven years after the events of the original and involves a Big Daddy snatching girls from coastal towns.

The site, There's Something in the Sea, features a tattered world map with an "Aloha" X marked on Ireland, and three scraps of paper associated with the location - Liscannor, Co. Clare.

First there's a photograph of the Big Daddy doll that the girl in the original teaser trailer was holding.

Then there's a newspaper clipping, "Local Girl Vanishes In Mysterious Attack", talking about the kidnapping of a seven-year-old girl, who was snatched from her bedroom by an unknown attacker who moved at "incredible speed", apparently unburdened by the weight of the helpless child.

"Due to the moonless night, [the girl's father] was unable to offer a description of the assailant," the report says. "He notes that the attacker was thin, above average height and wore some kind of 'red light'." Possibly a miner's helmet, it adds.

Finally, there's also a page torn off of a notepad with some scribbled notes from the person who found the Big Daddy doll, which points out that it resembles Clune's description of the attacker.

Most tellingly of all, the newspaper clipping is dated 20th February, 1967. The original BioShock was known to take place in 1960.

What can it all mean?

BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams is due out for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 later this year.

    Intriguing. Very intriguing indeed.
  • wadgem #2 3 years ago

    Incredible speed, thin and a miner's helmet? That's gotta be a splicer, not a Big Daddy.

    Big Daddies are a lot of things, but *thin* isn't one of them.
  • Pirotic #3 3 years ago

    It has 10 days worth of updates, and on the 10th day, check it again in the evening for a surprise!

    As for them being thin and fast, Did you ever see a big daddy without it's outfit on? Did you ever wonder what happened to all the boys?

    That's what I was thinking Wadgem.
    Could it be splicers from Rapture coming up to replace the lost sisters? They must be running pretty short of ADAM down there with no-one to collect it.

    I'm really intrigued now!
  • ZuluHero #5 3 years ago

    Ohh - sounds a bit different. More mystery and intrigue than the first… but maybe that’s just because information about it is really thin on the ground atm.
  • munki83 #6 3 years ago

    Did the boys get to go to disneyland
  • Wastelander #7 3 years ago

    Stop teasing Piro, you bast ;)

    We know the Big Daddies were steam-sealed inside the suits, but we never found out what happened to the boys at all.
    There could be a bunch of splicers with the Big Daddy programming that never got to the suit stage. But who's sending them? And will we get to see Rapture again?

    the site is testament to the atmosphere and polish that surrounds the bioshock world

    /zips fly.

    Given this is a sequel, could we be seeing the next generation of BDs?

    "As for them being thin and fast, Did you ever see a big daddy without it's outfit on?"

    Very good point.

    I love this sort of teaser material. Not just some short movie that just shows a big logo flying about in slow motion, but bit of suggestive story development that creates proper questions in the minds of the viewers.

    Overall, despite a few flaws, I really loved Bioshock. Really interested in where they take the sequel.

    Just from this news article, I had a vision of a game set in a small villiage in Ireland. It was green and the sky was blue and there was much adventure and mystery. It was brilliant.

    Piro = bastard.

    Nnnrghhh.

    "What can it all mean?"

    Er pretty much exactly what you said in the article actually........
  • Farfarer #13 3 years ago

    Doesn't look like "Aloha" to me. It's a date - "2/20/67".
  • VicViper #14 3 years ago

    Maybe Andrew Ryan had a site B built once Rapture looked like it was going to fail but didn't get out of there himself getting to wrapped up in the civil war that occured. Site be got the Plasmid tech but then kept quite once Rapture went to the splicers.

    Rapture was located in the mid atlantic wasn't it?
  • Pinewood_Groves #15 3 years ago

    Hehehe!
    Anticipation building...
    Sounds different...
    :) :) :)

    It's clearly "2/20/67" on the map though, don't know where the hell "Aloha" came from!
  • kangarootoo #16 3 years ago

    "Doesn't look like "Aloha" to me. It's a date - "2/20/67". "

    Oh yeah, now I look again its obvious. Stoopid eyes :)
  • Widge #17 3 years ago

    Is it the same team in charge? I hope they don't end up bollocking it up, generic'ing it with loads of parody and cameos.
  • MORZTAN #18 3 years ago

    Haha!! I love it when people let their imagination run wild, but "Aloha" takes the prize :D:D

    All the locations the investigation picks up, by the looks of it.

    really want too like bioshock...but just can't get into it...one more bash methinks!
  • JahB #23 3 years ago

    i love this viral stuff. and needless to say, Bioshock 2 - yes please, better sooner than later.

  • makeamazing #27 3 years ago

    Had this on PC, got some way through, and saw it going cheap on PS3, so got it and loving it even more. Great game, and cant wait for the next.
  • metalangel #28 3 years ago

    So, battling Big Daddies in Ireland circa 1967? That's just TOO weird. Also, GAWD DAMN SPLOICERS!
  • RexRunti #29 3 years ago

    If I know m virals, I suspect further strange events involving big daddies, splicers, little sisters to show up in other locations on the atlantic cost with different dates of course. So don't read too much into the Ireland side of things.
  • metalangel #30 3 years ago

    I figured as much. Am rather disappointed that this isn't a prequel. A detective story set in pre-civil war Rapture where you investigate smugglers, Fontaine and such would have been amazing. Less emphasis on the rubbish combat, more on interaction with other characters and buying and using plasmids as problem solving tools.
  • Subquest #31 3 years ago

    loved the first bioshock, but don't really want more of the same. this site gives the impression of something a bit different, hopefully with a layer of investigation.

    /bulge develops

    a nice little teaser site, I consider myself nicely teased...
  • Subquest #32 3 years ago

    disappointed that this isn't a prequel

    I would imagine they sat down after Bioshock with a bunch of ideas including a few which were prequels, and that somebody turned up with a better one. Try to be optimistic!
  • kangarootoo #33 3 years ago

    "Nice big spoiler headline"

    Really?

    Is it also a spoiler to say that Superman Returns has Superman in it?

    /waits for opening sequence of game to have "7 years later" appear as the first text on screen.

    This is kind of like when people complained that it was a spoiler to discuss the whole "its a computer simulation" aspect of Assassin's Creed, and then when I got around to playing it I discovered that aspect was completely and utterly obvious from about 12 seconds after booting the up the disc.
  • zuljin #34 3 years ago

    @kangarootoo
    ""Nice big spoiler headline"

    Really?"

    Yes and no, some of the Saw series relied on the assumption that time just continued on. When you find out that in some instances, events were pre recorded and in others events coincided when you assumed it was in the aftermath, it makes for a nice twist.
  • kangarootoo #35 3 years ago

    @zuljin

    Well, I'm familiar with SAW, but I think the chances of Bioshock 2 following anything like the same sort of format are pretty thin. Of all the info we could have been given, the "7 years later" suggestion seems the least likely to spoil anything.

    Also, and most importantly, the 7 years later suggestion was put forward because EG knew when the first game was set (because it told the player), and could read the date that the developers of Bioshock 2 wrote on the map, and presumeably took one away from the other.

    So are we saying this is only a spoiler for people who can't do basic subtraction? I'm not sure that really qualifies as a spoiler does it? Like if someone watched Sixth Sense or Memento and didn't understand the ending, its not a spoiler to explain the ending to them, because they themselves have SEEN it but simply didn't understand what was going on.

    If anything EG are providing a service for the less eagle eyed gamers among us ;)

    I agree - its unlikely to go down Saw path. I think the other guy was complaining because the seven years was revealed in the title though (and hence was on front page), rather than he visited the teaser site and EG spoilt it for him.
  • domoslaf #37 3 years ago

    What if the mysterious figure isn't a Big Daddy, but the main character from the first game, who - after escaping Rapture - for some reason decides to go around the world kidnapping little girls? It kinda struck me as possible, especially after looking at the map with all of the locations marked. May be a little fetched though.

  • kangarootoo #38 3 years ago

    @zuljin

    Well, it could be argued that it is a pretty feeble spoiler. Its almost like complaining that a news site reported the news instead of leaving readers to discover the details themselves.

    What else can EG do, have an article called "We recommend you go here and have a look at what is there" followed by an article containing a URL?
  • Sesonic #39 3 years ago

    Never played the origional, is it worth playing or does it get repetitive? Wasn't overly impressed with the demo and felt like condemned was more fun in a similar style of game.
  • andywilkie35 #40 3 years ago

    @Sesonic

    I'd recommend it. One of the most memorable storylines of any game IMO
  • zuljin #41 3 years ago

    @kanga
    True true, you don't really come to a news site then complain they give you news!

    On the other hand, having had my head in a bucket and lived in a cave for 6 months preceding release of Bioshock one, the game came as such a surprise to me! It is a good thing on occasion :)
  • kangarootoo #42 3 years ago

    @Sesonic

    Definitely worth a look. Its not perfect, but some bits of it are just awesome.
  • penhalion #43 3 years ago

    Just from looking at the map it's pretty obvious that Rapture wasn't destroyed at all (the center X that all the activity seems to surround IS Rapture).

    Seems to me that without anyone to govern the place, the big daddies or whoever controls them now, are replacing the little sisters by stealing more young girls. Given this is the only way to produce ADAM I guess we get to go back to Rapture and finish the job the character from BioShock 1 started. This time I guess we need to sink the frikkin' place down the old trench and ensure the sea claims it properly this time.
  • shotgun44 #44 3 years ago

    Finally got round to playing this last month. Finished it in two days! It was sweeeeeet! Was pretty annoyed I didn't get the historian achievement though! I swear I looked everywhere! This is going to be amazing...
  • ilmaestro #45 3 years ago

    lolling hard at how well the power of suggestion worked on me: I just glanced at the map quickly as I "knew" what the word said next to the X, and was convinced that it did indeed say "aloha". XD
  • Chalee #46 3 years ago

    I'm disappointing that this Bioshock thread hasn't become a den of bioshock 'you can't die' hate. Eurogamer readership, you disappoint me!
  • Turambar #47 3 years ago

    "Given this is a sequel, could we be seeing the next generation of BDs? "

    Perhaps just a big daddy sans armour?
  • metalangel #48 3 years ago

    @shotgun44: there are a few diaries that you must get the first time as you can't get back to those areas again later. Also, did anyone else notice the Big Daddy welding one of those between-building tubes during your initial descent to Rapture? Looks like they know enough to try and keep the place watertight...
  • kangarootoo #49 3 years ago

    @shotgun44

    I reckon I know where the tape was that you missed. I missed it too.

    Its perhaps in the levels with the mad artist (I forget his name). If you fight him as soon as you get the opportunity (when you have completed his masterpiece) you end up killing him before get opens the door to his own chambers. I believe that if you leave him be he will open the door to hos rooms, and that is where you will find the last tape. I might be wrong on the details (it was a long time ago, and it was hearsay) so you might want to check an FAQ to be sure.
  • kangarootoo #50 3 years ago

    @shotgun44

    P.s. take a photo graph of his body when you dop eventually kill him, for another achievement.
