Age of Conan available to download

You'd better have lots of Internets.

Funcom has announced that its fantasy MMO Age of Conan is now available as a direct download from the developer's website.

The game costs just under GBP 40, EUR 50 and USD 50. It comes with 32 days' free play time - that's two more than the boxed copy, "due to the time estimated for downloads".

You'll certainly need patience and a fast Internet connection with a plentiful download allowance - the game client is 15 gigabytes in size.

The game is delivered through a download manager that supports pause and resume, so you won't need to worry about getting it all at once.

Funcom owns all the rights to Age of Conan, takes all the subscription fees, and operates the game on its own. Moving to digital downloads means it's now possible to buy and play Age of Conan without sending a single penny the way of troubled publisher Eidos. Poor old Eidos. Have a heart!

Also after downloading you'll already spend an hour or so downloading patches just in case you didn't realise. You can set up the account while doing this to shave 5 minutes of the total time har har :p.

About f'ing time, this should have been available from launch.

But £40GB for a digital client? That's obscene. You can buy the boxed version in stores for well under £30 already, and that comes with a book and some discs and everything!

size and price make this very restrictive - i thought the whole point of digital distribution was to cut costs for the the consumer

And after downloading patches, you'll download patches for the patches, followed by patches for the patches for the patches...

This thing gets updated every week, and every week it's one step forward, two steps back with regard to bugs. Rumour has it the dev team who did an amazing last minute job of getting the game in shape for release have all been transferred onto the X360 version and an expansion, leaving an incapable bunch in charge of updating AoC live.

Or I could drive to town and walk in Woolworths, buy the game, and get back home in half an hour. Maybe 15mins if I really pushed it, but then I take the chance of having to waste time losing the cops on my tail...

£40? Jesus. Not to mention it's actually £3 a month more expensive than WoW too... Funcom reeeally must be under financial pressure.

@ tiste - and thats the precise reason that it will fail in this case - you gotta look after your customers else you are in deep doodoo

I'd rather give Eidos money out of charity, than put another penny of my hard-earned the way of Funcom.

    :)

Amusing that your article appears right next to the ShopTo embedded advert selling the game for £24.99. The choice is obvious really, Funcom must be mad to charge that much.

"The game costs just under GBP 40, EUR 50 and USD 50."

Can I buy it in American, please?

Or I could drive to town and walk in Woolworths, buy the game, and get back home in half an hour.

Then wait for an age anyway because you then need to dowload the patches that are included with the download version...

The reason Funcom does this is that the code you get on the two DVDs in the retail box is waaaay out of date.
