In one of the most shameless marketing promos in recent memory, Microsoft and Halo 4 developer 343 Industries have teamed up with 7-Eleven and augmented reality advertising firm Ogmento to create the ludicrously named Halo 4: King of the Hill Fueled by Mountain Dew. (Or Halo 4: King of the Hill Fuled by Mountain Dew, as the iTunes page calls it.)
The free app tasks players with scanning Mountain Dew and Doritos products as they "battle to become King of the Hill at your local 7-Eleven Store." Those who top the leaderboards at any particular location will obtain such Halo 4 rewards as double XP matches, an exclusive dashboard theme, a "Bulletproof" Emblem, and a "Locus" Helmet in the US or Ghost Prop Avatar in Canada.
Players can even compete on local and national levels. I'm sure the competition is riveting!
Of course it's not nearly as thrilling as, you know, playing Halo 4, which our Simon Parkin rather liked. He awarded it an 8/10 in his Halo 4 review where he said, "Halo returns with a bang, not a whimper." It also returns with WTF? Mountain Dew and Doritos tie-in, apparently.
