Resident Evil 6 six-player co-op confirmed?

Xbox.com listing outs multiplayer info.

Resident Evil 6 will support six-player online co-op play, according to now-removed information on the game's official Xbox.com marketplace listing.

Microsoft's Resident Evil 6 page also suggested Capcom's horror shooter will support up to eight players playing online in the game's as-yet unrevealed multiplayer mode.

Local co-op play will also be available for two people.

The game's Xbox.com listing has now been altered to remove all mention of multiplayer and co-op modes, after Kotaku spotted the information over the weekend.

Resident Evil 5 supported two-player co-op play throughout the game's main campaign mode, which featured Chris Redfield and his partner Sheva.

Last week's Resident Evil 6 reveal trailer featured three main protagonists, each with their own partner too.

Co-op waters down the survival horror aspect.
  • The_HEAD_85 #5 4 months ago

@Master09 It's only one third Survival Horror (Leon) now.. followed by some Gears of War (Chris) and Streets of Rage (Alex Wesker)
  • paulf #6 4 months ago

it also says it will be released 3 days ago

I was hoping the "last of it's kind" line Capcom fed people after 5 meant a change for the better.

    *sigh*

6 player co op could make any special objectives/achievements really difficult if they require all 6 players to conform and collaborate. Left 4 dead rings a bell.

I really can't look at the RE6 logo the same now. :)

The page is showing the multiplayer details for me still (identical to the screenshot form the article)

6 player coop is too much for RE surely :|
  • Kami #14 4 months ago

Can we maybe also remember that Mercenaries Mode is probably going to make a return and that has been supporting multiplayer for a while now?

As for "Co-op waters down the survival horror aspect", pfft. Oh wait, I remember a few multiplayer horrors from my misspent youth! Zombies Ate My Neighbours! That is a survival horror. It's also an action-packed shooterfest. And it was fantastically funny to boot, and a lot of fun. Local co-op survival horror. In the 16 bit era. It's good sometimes to be an old fart and remember this stuff.

Can we please for the love of the HORROR GENRE let go of this small, contacted idea of "survival horror"? A horror game compels you to survive anyway, so survival is part of the actual horror genre anyway. Drop the survival part, and appreciate the horror genre is once more expanding and trying new things.

They may not always work, but if you don't like it, do what the majority did for Resident Evil CV:X, RE Remake and RE: Zero - don't buy it. That is what forced the series to change - critical backlash and consumer apathy, combined with poor sales. And that will always force a series to change.

We haven't seen someone sit down and show us a simple, plain demonstration of RE6 in action. Running around proclaiming doom is something we as gamers on a forum do exceptionally well (Sony is DOOOOOOOMED! 3DS is DOOOOOOOOOMED! Vita is DOOOOOOOOOOOOMED! Blizzard is DOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED!) but for the moment, it's a bit early to proclaim the death of a series based on one ritalin-riddled ADD trailer.

Relax. Breathe. Repeat after me. Resident Evil 6 could be good. Resident Evil 6 could be good. Resident Evil 6 could be good...

    Will this be for PC?

I love co-op games, like Killing Floor or Alien Swarm.
  • JahB #19 4 months ago

cause 2 player coop didn't ruin 5 enough, let's add some more. capcom is so out of touch with RE that it hurts
  • Ternon #20 4 months ago

    @JahB

What ruined RE5 was that stupid cunt Sheva that followed you everywhere thus completely ruining the immersion and anxiety of a horror game.

This is a separate mode from the campaign.

    Great comment Kami !
I love Zombies Ate My Neighbours too, that's a great example of fun horror based co-op, but it wasn't really scary was it ? Neither was Left 4 Dead for that matter, tense & panic inducing yes, scary no. So can co-op survival horror (I'm still going to call it survival horror sorry, Kami I just like the sound of it !) be scary ? I'm not sure actually ...
  • geeza2020 #24 4 months ago

This most definitely is NOT the Resident Evil I grew up with. And that makes me a sad panda.
  • Abdu@EG #25 4 months ago

One thing I'm sure of it:

Crapcom will release the damn game with locked contents or per-release DLCs. I'm no sheep, I'll wait for the RE6 Gold Edition.
  • brider #26 4 months ago

Hell why dont crapcom just name it Call of evil and get it over with :(
  • Porko_Rossi #27 4 months ago

@Ternon You can tell Sheva to, "Wait".
  • stryker1121 #28 4 months ago

Separate mode from campaign means it can be safely ignored. More importantly, I can't unsee the idea of the "6" logo looking like a giraffe getting head from a dolphin. Damn you Internet!

@wanderingkid; That's fine though, aside the negs, point is valid. Survival Horror is a concept that was coined in 1989, except if we're being brutally honest about it, the whole point of these games is to, you know, survive to the end. For me, "Survival Horror" covers a tiny, narrow spectrum of the horror genre these days and we use it to refer to the early Resident Evil games and Silent Hill 1, 2 and 3 (and arguably The Room).

I don't know about scary - it depends on the delivery. Zombies Ate My Neighbours was a co-op survival horror shooter, but as I said, it used comedy in abundance. That said, in 1994 I was still a teenager playing it co-op with my friends and we were suitably on edge about it. As funny as it was - the maze levels being chased around by those chainsaw-wielding freaks whilst trying to work out the fastest, safest, quickest route to the survivors delivered thrills and adrenaline that I remember very fondly. It was exciting. Thrilling. Scary? Yeah, I suppose some parts of it were scary - that first moment your American Tourist survivors turned into werewolves certainly made me jump! Being older and wiser, I suppose it would be different - but at the time it was certainly, despite the surface concept, not a "for kids" game. We've had arguably more exposure to more violent, ghastly images in the past 18 years that these days the horror in Z.A.M.N. might even seem archaically quaint.

But having been there at the time, I can say without hesitation that it was a horror game. I loved it. Still do.

But you are right, Horror isn't always these days about "scares". It's about excitement, tension, action, the mystique and intrigue, the gore - a lot about the gore, seeing as Hostel and Saw and its ilk parade around as horror (they're just snuff porn in my eyes but what do I know?) - the concept and the knowledge there is far more going on than simply a few zombies walking around. Which is why I find the idea RE6 can't be a horror game to be quite funny. It most certainly will be. It just won't be that tiny little "survival horror" niche that people won't let go of.

And again, considering the limited information, many are making awfully big assumptions over it. It looks to be the most complex Resi game to date - three main characters, in three different areas, tackling what looks to be three different yet simultaneous outbreaks. There will be thrills, spills, betrayals, big ugly mutants and tense moments. Hopefully there'll be some comedy in there too, although I suspect that is one thing the series may never return to sadly, its oft camply sinister sense of wit and verve seems to have been removed. That, for me, I lament deeply.

As for multiplayer - Mercenaries Mode already did that in Resi 5. So people need to relax. 6-way multiplayer screams Mercenaries Mode to me. Also means there'll be eight characters most likely to go around, woo. Kinky-dressed Claire and/or Ashley perchance?!

And again, it's so early days, don't write it off just yet. It might be good. It most probably will be good. Will it be amazing? Jury is out, but even Resi 5 was a serviceable game. It lacked some texture, some wit and some charm, but it was far from terrible. It was, in fact, rather enjoyable for one or two playthroughs. Sheva's mysteriously British accent not withstanding of course. She always reminded me of Lara Croft.

It's this violent reaction that Resi 6 is continuing on a path that, invariably, the series has been on since Resident Evil 2 that surprises me. More numbers, more mutants, more conspiracy, and a bigger and darker city to explore and play in.

Sounds like your a-typical old Resident Evil idea to me. People need to relax. Resident Evil 5 did not destroy your lives. It did not eat your firstborn or condemn your soul into a rank pus-filled putrid pool of evil.

It was "okay". Think positive. Resi 6 may indeed have learned some lessons. You never know. Much stranger things have happened.

I once couldn't go into my kitchen because a bee was in there after playing Code:Veronica all day. Can they do that again please?

I was so excited about 5 but have never made it past the first level for some reason, bought it twice 2nd hand and got bored the same time both times. Maybe the series has just lost its pull for me? I still fancy that Ada Wong chick though
