Hydrophobia Prophecy PSN release date

Aquatic adventure drops next week.

Downloadable adventure Hydrophobia Prophecy dribbles onto PlayStation Network next Tuesday, complete with optional Move controls, developer Dark Energy Digital has announced.

Hydrophobia Prophecy is a revision of Hydrophobia Pure, which is a revision of the original 4/10 Hydrophobia, released on Xbox Live Arcade last autumn.

"It's Hydrophobia 1.5, really," Dark Energy managing director Deborah Jones previously told Eurogamer. "It's also not the original and it's also not Pure."

Quintin Smith re-reviewed Hydrophobia Prophecy for Eurogamer but kept with the original Hydrophobia's 4/10 score.

Picked this up in a Steam sale not to long ago. Its not a bad game its just not a good one either. They came up with some really intresting idea's but just failed to implement them well. Shame as it had alot of potential :(

Move support too as far as I know.

I also picked it up on Steam a while back and agree with Liquid's assessment. However I can't for the life of me think how Move support would help it at all.

Meant to be free for Plus users so can't complain about that

Have they fixed this up yet again, and is it worth playing yet?

EDIT: Yep, it has been fixed up again, so it's Hydrophobia v1.75 now. Will play it if it's free on PS+ though, never turn down a free game.

This was the most disappointing xbla purchase I have made to date.

Ouch. It seems like there's been a huge amount of love going into this game and it hasn't paid off at all. Poor blighters, that's got to be so disappointing.

Hopefully there's a demo. And as bad as the game is / was, I think its amazing that DED stuck with it and listened to fans' feedback and tried to fix all their complaints. There was even a member of their staff on EG replying to questions! What other company has done that?

I actually liked it when they originally released it on the XB360 I've been awaiting the sequel for what seems like forever.

I played Pure on XBLA and thoroughly enjoyed it, comedy accents and all.

And, as said above, the dev's commitment to user feedback and their willingness to try to improve their game should be commended.

@landlock I may be wrong, but I believe the updated version was supposed to improve and finish the game rather than span it out to a trilogy they just decided to kill it instead.

Shame as it deserved better but in the end, despite all the revisions, they just couldn't pull it off.

I've been kind of looking forward to this for a while, but I can't say that launching on the same day as Uncharted 3 seems like a good strategy. Still, I have Plus so if it really is free (I'm a little sceptical about that) then of course I'll give it a whirl.

Knowing the EU PS Store, it won't actually arrive next week at all.
  • Paul_cz #14 7 months ago

I enjoyed the game on PC, the water was simply amazing. I have no idea what your and RPS reviews are on about. It felt like british sites hated british made game just for the fun of it.

Are we sure it's free on EU Plus? The EU blog stopped giving advance announcements on Plus content following The Great Outage and the gap between US and EU on the PSN has gotten wider again since then, especially when it comes to Plus.

Plus has pretty much been a token that allows you to pay exchange rate pricing on some content instead of "open pricing policy EU Markup prices". The last couple of freebies have been quite forgettable games or titles that were released a very long time ago.

    @God_Octo Trendy Entertainment for one...

For god's sake, stop polishing a turd and go and make a decent game with the technology. A puzzle game would suit the fluid simulation.
  • torment74 #19 7 months ago

A turd is a turn no matter how you polish it. Have these devs done anything apart from Snooker that's any good? These guys need to go away
  • flameboy84 #20 7 months ago

freebie for playstation plus as well...next week turning unexpectedly even more epic. Uncharted 3, Payday The Heist, DC Universe and this (our first mid month extra game based freebie on plus for a while)

I just don't get it. They can't seem to acknowledge their game is just not worth buying (at least at full price). The many issues with the first version were just the tip of the iceberg. It's great that they took the time and offered a huge update that made the game much more enjoyable, but the bottom line is still: It's an episodic game which ends just as you expect it to finally start. Think it took me two and a half hours until I saw the end. And the game just isn't what it was said to be. The water physics are for most parts only visual effects. There are no real water physics puzzles (unless you count lowering water as a puzzle) and now, a year after a release, the water looks already pretty dated. The fake water in the three year old Bioshock looks more natural than Hydrophobia's more oily fluids. Halo 3 has better dynamic water as well.

Promoting a failed game for the fourth time (original release, Pure release, Steam release, PSN release) is just so wrong. Kudos to the developers (but I guess if it fails they're done) for believing in their game, but like I said, you have to realize a failure and move on. The technology (the tech demos were way more advanced than the downgraded version that made the final game) can be great if it isn't held back by current consoles. Just make a decent game with the engine and release it on Steam only. And don't use the Hydrophobia name. And don't try to be everything, puzzler, action adventure, shooter, horror game ... just stick to one mechanic and do it right. Make a Portal with water.
