Space Marine 2 discussions have begun

Relic wants to challenge "the big boys".

Space Marine developer Relic Entertainment has begun early talks on a potential sequel.

Discussions are "literally, just starting" Relic marketing manager James McDermott told Eurogamer last week.

"We have an internal gating process and we'll already be talking about whether we put [Space Marine 2] into that."

While discussions have begun, a sequel to the September third-person shooter is yet to be approved.

"Whether we make it or not will be dependant on how well the game does and then also how good the concept is for number two," McDermott said.

But, according to McDermott, the Space Marine development team already has ideas in place.

"We'd be in a really good position to do something quite impressive and give the real big boys a run for their money. That's what we feel.

"The first one, don't get me wrong, it's a great game. It's just we already see the potential of where we can go next as game developers, because we always want to up our game."

Space Marine sees a squad of Ultramarines take on Chaos Marines and Orks on an Imperial Forge World in a race for a super weapon called a Warlord Class Battle Titan.

What does Relic have in mind for the sequel?

"We've got an interesting area we've already identified within that world that might make a compelling sequel," McDermott replied.

"Look at some of the more popular fiction within the 40k universe. We're looking at that stuff carefully. There's one particular one, which we're like, that would make a really good video game. A really interesting video game."

How cryptic.

The Horus Heresy, then. Get it done.

Horus Heresy would be awesome, but they would need to be incredibly careful not to do anything that would fuck up the canon.

Horus Heresy wouldn't make sense in terms of a sequel. Helsreach, or the battle for Armageddon as a whole however would be awesome.

They should do a game of the tyranid invasion of Ultramar.

Gotta be honest, although I played the tabletop game as a kid and played the strategy games on PC i never got into all the back story and universe too much. Really looking forward to playing Space Marine though and will be interesting to see if Relic pull it off considering they're known for their RTS games more than anything else. In fact I believe 'The Outfit' is the only game outside of RTS they have developed?

They could do some space hulk. Classic, done to death but always fun.

I expect he's thinking about doing a space hulk game. They're not looking to do anything that'll particularly mess with the canon and I doubt they'd even want to get close to something that's already set up and prone to being messed up. Space hulk would be safe in that it fits in established gaming conventions and doesn't have to stick to an already-written story.

That has to be the adventures of Garro - starting out battling aliens, warsingers etcc - to defending against the warp on a badly damaged cruiser... to finally hunting his own corrupted brothers...

    Would be a BRILLIANT game...

Look up the 2 audio books and the Flight of the Eisenstein story from the Horus Herecy...

please please Relic! let that be it!

So freakin' excited for this game...THQ and Relic are overdue for a Home Run and this is really starting to look like one...40k is such an awesome ip and I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Space Marine will be better than either CoD or BF this year...GotY...

    Bring it home Relic!

I just hope they give it some really rich story, DoW story was always a bit thin.

Make a DMC-style game featuring Harlequins, Relic. You barely scratch the surface of what makes 40K so great with Space Marines (as cool as they already are).

Seriously, space elf clown ninjas who perform psychically enhanced interpretative dance who are warriors with no mortal equals? Sign me on.

I do know nothing about Warhammer 40K universe... but the gameplay I've seen from this game is AWESOME. Relic, count on me for a secuel. You've got one game SOLD already this September.

Hope people give support to Relic on this IP, for it's clear that they have a good game in their hands. Hope Gears 3 do not harm the sales. If only they had released the game this month or next...

This IP will be THQ's Gears of War. I cannot wait to play!!

I'm happy to see more of these. Space Orks, The Imperium and Chaos are just a fraction of the lore and alien races available to harvest for sequels.

I'd advise against Tyranids, though. The "space marine bug hunt" is practically a genre in itself it's been done so often.

Playing a different Chapter would be cool, as well. Space Wolves were always a favourite of mine.

This somehow reminds me of a veiled attempt at saying they don't have too much faith in their game and hope to make it better in the sequel if there is a sequel.

Even if they just had one space hulk level where you are in Terminator armour then i'd be a happy bunny

Now, I'm not a fan of 40K and all that, but how did somebody seriously pitch the idea for this game, and then reveal the title as: "Space Marine" without falling about laughing??????
