Halo: CE Anniversary supports Kinect

But how will it work?

The Halo HD remake supports Kinect, Microsoft has confirmed.

Microsoft Game Studios boss Phil Spencer confirmed Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary will support Kinect in a GameSpot interview.

"Core focus for us in our press briefing this year with Kinect actually came from two sides," he said.

"As a first-party, we believe Kinect will be important to all genres of games, be it racing games with Forza, combat games like Ryse, even games like Halo Anniversary has Kinect integration."

But there's no word on how it will work.

Microsoft focused on Kinect during its E3 press conference, announcing a raft of new games.

Fable: The Journey, Ryse and Minecraft are just three of the games that support Kinect. Now Halo: CE Anniversary joins the list.

Due out on 15th November, 343 Industries' game lets you play through the original Halo: Combat Evolved either in its original Xbox state or with new current-gen visuals.

    Why?

Why are Microsoft trying to shoehorn Kinect into, well, everything?

Grenade lobbing + air driving would be my guesses.

Hopefully it'll be able to pick up my individual testicles when I'm teabagging the newbz

    Or turret gunning.

On a serious note, I expect you'll be able control Theatre mode with your hands/voice.

Surprised that wasn't in Reach tbh.

    Oi...Microsoft. NOOO!!

The thing here is, that I would expect the target of the Halo remake to be mostly gamers who consider themselves "hardcore". So adding Kinect, even if it doesn't get in the way of gameplay and even if you can play without using it, will probably alienate a portion of that audience simply by association.

I assume all the people complaining don't have Kinect.

if so, why are you complaining? It doesn't affect you in the slightest.

just got kinect for Child of Eden, it annoys me that so little of the dashboard can be navigated using it. Interested to see what they do with it, hopefully at least menus will be kinect compatible

Always love the kinect comments. When it's in a casual game people loudly bitch about "Where are the hardcore games M$?", and when it's in a 'core' game, they cry "Stop shoehorning Kinect into our hardcore games MS!"

It's like watching monkeys flinging feces in a zoo.

    Retarded monkeys.

We don't know if it affects people without it yet, you just have to look at LittleBigPlanet where there's Move specific levels that isn't compatible with the pad, not trying to say Halo remake will isolate a portion of gamers in this manner, but it's too early to jump to conclusions either way.

    Voice control?

Teabagging or grenade throwing or GTFO.

You can use Kinect to talk down the ludicrous price of EU 35

I don't have Kinect, but I don't have any problem with it having functionality in any "core" game. if it gives people another way to do things I'm all for it.

I do have a problem with the possibility of non-Kinect games having features that remain locked or unusable if you don't have Kinect. But that seems unlikely in this particular case, and thus far I'm not aware of any game where this has happened.

I just hope that whatever functionality they implement in Halo:CEA is actually well thought out and considered, and not some gimmick shoe-horned in, as those gimmicks don't do anybody favours (thinking of Mass Effect 3 here, reading Sheperds lines is stupidly retarded. Though ordering the squad through voice is a good idea. But neither of these really *need* Kinect, as they could surely be done with the headset mic).

I think most core games with splitscreen multiplayer could benefit from head-tracking.

The problem I have with Kinect in Halo is that I'll have to take my hand off the controller to throw grenade or whatever. This will leave the character not fully controllable for a second or so. As every one knows, in a mp game this will leave you vulnerable!

  • Rack #24 11 months ago

Thing is if you have Kinect or not it's a load of development time adding some waggle bullshit into a game that won't benefit from it. Time that could be spent on interesting and exciting new features that everyone could benefit from.

@Deckard1 - isn't he Greek? His English is a lot better than my Greek, and I think it's a bit unfair to call him out for not writing perfectly in a language that (I assume) isn't his mother tongue.

@Shadders - I'd never even have thought of that! Perhaps they could do something with Kinect in Forge too (if indeed Anniversary has a Forge mode. No one has confirmed it, but then I haven't seen anyone ask.

I'd imagine we'll learn more at PAX. I'm quite interested to see what it brings, and if it sucks, I can always just, y'know, not use it.
  • Deckard1 #26 11 months ago

How the hell was I supposed to know he was Greek? He does look pretty dreamy in his profile picture though.

@Deckard1 - fair point! I've seen him mention it a few times, that's all.

    @davisorle - I think you're in there.

Kinect is not gaming. It's for c***s.

    @davisorle - there, in there! *points* :p

It's just something you'd say if you knew someone was interested: for instance, say you were talking to a girl and she seemed interested, you might say to a friend "I think I'm in there".
