Bungie Mobile not iOS exclusive forever

But what is it?

You can only download the new free Bungie Mobile app if you own an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

But that won't be the case forever.

"We're not ready to announce phase 2 features at this time," wrote Bungie on its website. "That said, we hear non-iPhone users loud and clear. Same goes for feature requests covering forums, more robust stat integration and free puppies.

"We make no specific promises, but we will be updating the app in the future. Keep the comments coming and hang tight."

Those with a portable Apple device have access to a Blue Flames effect in Halo: Reach. Once you activate it the effect will pop up in the game's Armory under Armor Effects. Blue Flame is labelled Eternal.

Once you've done that, a Bungie Nameplate will be added when you visit the Bungie website.

Bungie Mobile was released yesterday. It lets you check your Halo: Reach Challenge and Commendation progress, hook up to the Bungie news feed and grants access to an online swag bag.

"It's our first, small step into the mobile world," wrote Bungie communicator Urk. "The first of many.

"It really is just a beginning - our first, super cute baby step. We already have adult-type plans to keep updating Bungie.net Mobile with new features and enhancements in the months and years to come."

The next step of those mobile plans may be Bungie Aerospace, a mysterious spin-off company working on something called Crimson. This has nothing to do with the rumoured Destiny MMO Bungie is working on for Activision.

Bungie has pledged to reveal Bungie Aerospace by the time 7th of July - Bungie Day - arrives.

Halo: Reach in 16 minutes, 34 seconds.

Considering that Android has a higher market share than iOS devices, I'm sick of everything being iOS only. (source: http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2011...

    WP7 version or GTFO please.
  • Peew971 #3 11 months ago

As far as Halo Reach is concerned you get all you want from the Halo Waypoint app on WP7, including stats. When the new Bungie game is announced though it's a different story...

Will get this on my iPad, but would love to have it on my Android phone.

You're really not missing much android owners.

@streetmagix - You're right, it's pretty damn weird that the most ubiquitous mobile OS usually has to wait for apps after the iOS release...

Things come out on iOS first because it has a much bigger market of paying customers - developers go where they can earn money, not where the most phones are.

It's realy poor compared to Waypoint on WP7. Baby step indeed.

    @Streetmagix

Android has a bigger market share but is spread across so many handsets and tablets of varing power and quality it's hard to gurantee all of your intended audience can actually use the app, with iOS theres really only four options that people will be using at this point, 3GS, 4, iPad or iPad 2.
  • streetmagix #10 11 months ago

@Whitster ... so just like every application for Windows, Linux or OS X? It's a lame excuse really.
  • t8yman #11 11 months ago

the haters dont like it up 'em do they?
  • dr_zoidthrob #12 11 months ago

@Whitster Don't forget, that 3GS, 4 and iPad's 1 & 2 are four devices with completely different specs (screen resolution, processor speed, amount of memory)... Fragmentation, right there.

Having worked on iOs, I can tell you it's a right pain in the arse.

I do hope Bungie show some WP7 love in the future. I can understand why they didn't launch it on WP7, due to it being a much smaller part of the mobile pie, but having said that, as WP7 has XBL integration, it does look a bit strange on the surface.

As others have said though, we have Waypoint on WP7, which is excellent. There's also Reach Central for all your Reach stat keeping as well, so we are very well served in that regard.

Those of you complaining about this currently being iOS-only and not being on ‘the most ubiquitous mobile OS’ are ignoring one important point: this app targets only iOS 4. The overwhelming majority of Android devices are running older and outdated versions of Android (source: http://www.mobile88.com/news/read.asp?fi... ), so it's an unrealistic expectation that Bungie release this ‘for Android’ with equal priority to iOS, unless you assume they create a version targeting outdated versions of Android. Depending on what the app does, this might not even be technically possible.
  • edhe #15 11 months ago

@kapowaz " The overwhelming majority of Android devices are running older and outdated versions of Android"

Because we all know that if you're running an older version of the OS that the screen's a different shape, the keyboard's on the underside of the phone and you have to chirrup to it in Starling language to make it work.

FFS noob. Only 1.* versions of android are deprecated and they've not been sold for at least a year. If you develop for honeycomb then you're fine for all versions.
  • immateriaux #16 11 months ago

It's not about handsets or OS versions etc, its the Apps themselves. Android apps have nothing like the throughput of what's on the App store currently - it's a catch 22 where devs know they've a far higher potential to move hundreds of thousands of iOS apps so obviously that will be their first focus

Android may have a bigger market share, but it's a much much smaller market as far as software revenues and downloads go. Which is why so much software comes out for the iOS.
