Bleszinksi kills Gears of War PS3 hope

"There's zero chance."

What are the chances of Gears of War coming to PS3? It's a round number, according to creative director Cliff Bleszinski.

"I would say in the foreseeable future there's zero chance of Gears of War being on the PlayStation 3," he told IndustryGamers. "Can we bury that now?

"Seriously. It's like, we have a great deal with Microsoft, they're a great partner..."

Bleszinski dismissed any prior PS3 chatter as the sort of stuff that makes "exciting news" but has little substance.

Gears of War and Xbox 360 have walked hand in hand ever since the console was announced. Epic VP Mark Rein even once joked how he'd cost Microsoft $1 billion dollars because he sent a screenshot of what Gears of War would have looked like with only 256MB of RAM, thus forcing a costly architecture upgrade.

Microsoft has also supported each Gears of War release with huge marketing campaigns, and they needed to be big: the first Gears of War arrived in shops in the same month as PS3.

    @Dizzy Epic only had a 2 game deal with Microsoft, and as far as I know Epic still owns all of the rights.

    As a PS3 owner who previously finished Gears of War when I had a 360 and played Gears of War 2 on a cousins 360, I can safely say I'm not bothered one bit.

    I'm pretty sure some mouthpiece at Epic previously said they would like to get Gears of War on the PS3, as it made sense.

    Obviously not to everyone else though!

    No surprise there then. RAM isn't an issue though. Unreal 3 on PS3 ran great, and games using the unreal engine (Batman AA) ran great too.

    Epic own the rights to it not MS. MS only have an exclusive publishing deal.
    Epic can do what they wish with the series when the deal is finished.

    As an owner of both a PS3 and an Xbox 360 I can say that the PS3-only owners aren't missing out on that much. They're good games but not the kind of games I'll buy on Day 1 in the future.

    Im quite glad gives me a reason to fire up my 360, if it weren't for Gears there would be nothing else out this year i would want to play on it.

    As a honest multi platform owner, I can say without any agenda, that Uncharted 3 and Gears 3 are the biggest highlight of my gaming year. Full Stop.

    gears isn't a MS franchise as such - they just signed a deal for 3 of them.

    so i guess they own the first three, but not the IP outright.

    Gears is good if you like that sort of thing, I played the first one and found it quite dull after a while, fighting my through overly grey cover-filled corridors. I only played for a short while though so maybe the story makes up for it I don't know.

    For those who want it it would be great news and obviously it would make great financial sense to Epic if they were allowed to publish through EA, but they're not so there's little point in debating it really.

    I've never seen any evidence of Playstation owners really wanting this series . The first one looked great at the beginning of this generation of hardware but they have since been surpassed by many other titles.

    Ya, I'm pretty sure this was a publicity stunt. "Exciting news"? In all seriousness, had anyone heard this rumor? I never would have known people thought Gears was heading to PS3 if Epic hadn't announced this.

    I can only think it is its exclusive status, and the crazy marketing that follows it that has propelled this series from also-ran to something better known. These games just aren't anything special.

    Why should PS3 dudes care? Both GoWs are completely mediocre macho shooters. GoW would make a good camp game, but it decides to take itself dead serious which makes it even more embarassing.

    Seriously, IS IT JUST EUROGAMER? I want to know, I haven't even been in the loop anywhere else for a long time. I've picked up on this whole dynamic of the 'real' Europeans who statistically favor Sony feeling slighted by EG's supposed bias, and maybe that partially explains why so many still feel the need of rushing to 'the defense' on every freaking pitiful blurb.

    And there's always some of the same clowns on any side, but I swear to hell... if you average it all up, the number of predictable, no imagination, reflexive contrarianisms is about 5 to 1 in favor of the SDF. On this site anyway.

    So 1 xbox exclusive equates to the 20 on ps3. I would rather GoW 3 over GoW3 any day. Kratos for the win.

    I hear ya monkeyspoon, uncharted is an awesome game in single player.
    But it's not as much fun as gears of war when it comes to online modes and co-op horde modes imo.
    If i only owned a ps3 i'd love it to come to the machine but as i have both consoles this news is hardly going to bother me.

    Gears of war 1 2 and 3 on a single bluray disc in a year or so's time would have been fun though.

    Tbh many ps3 owners would probably get excited by this coming to ps3 , but as an ex 360 owner, I'm not sure why. I almost finished first one but gave up on last level(not even sure why, just never went back), but thoroughly enjoyed playing co op with my brother , and bought second game day one , but really didn't enjoy it that much. It just felt clinical almost. Boxes ticked for sequel etc , but no soul to it. Got bored half way through the campaign( most of that was played as co op, can't say I would bothered alone) and found the vehicle sections to be awful . Can't say I ever tried online, but this franchise clearly has its fans, and regardless of people's opinions of game, it would be a big coup to have this as multiplatform game ( 10 million sales over 2 instalments), although I honestly don't think it would sell those figures on ps3, but just cause most shooters apart from cod , don't manage anywhere near that figure on ps3 , rather than a reflection of quality of game .
    I'm sure if gears 3 was on ps3 I'd buy it anyway, just to see what the hype was about, but can't guarantee I'd bother finishing it after my experience with last one. Anyway , each to their own

    I don't play much online, and online play seems to be the big attraction for the person I know that plays Gears regularly, so it is horses for courses I guess.

    It seems good that it is an exclusive to the 360 imo, as it ensures that anything left in the 360's performance tank this late on, or undiscovered techniques to get more and give more to the gamer are still being actively researched by a few people.

    I still don't rate Epic, like I do Idsoftware for producing great gameplay engines that have defined shooter PC hardware generations by visuals & performance since I can remember, but if nothing else, this game's gameplay engine seems to get a lot more work than most games licensing Epic's engine.

    GoW as an acronym to us = God of War. A much more worthy franchise, tbh.

    I personally LOVE Gears of War but I have to be honest when I say it was the reason I bought my Xbox 360 in the first place. I've never been a massive Halo fan despite enjoying the online in 2 and 3 but Gears just clicked for me on day 1. I enjoy Forza but there's a close alternative in GT5 so wouldn't miss it. Never bothered about Fable. The original Crackdown game was also a massive highlight for me. But I have to say apart from Gears and Crackdown, everything else I've enjoyed has been available on PS3 or exclusive to it.

    I love the Gears MP, I'm a massive fan of third person shooters. But if I had to pick between consoles today I'd choose the PS3 simply because of the variety on offer and the number of games on the way. For this reason I think PS3 owners might have wanted Gears in the first year or so of the consoles release as it suffered a barren run in terms of new releases. But since 2008 the games have been coming fast and strong and despite all the hoo-ha about the 360 stealing former Playstation exclusives, the PS3 has actually got hold of more former 360 exclusives. As a gamer I win personally. But I'd be pretty aggrieved if Gears was the only real blockbuster game coming this year if I only owned a 360.

    I agree with a couple of people on this. Gears of War is ok, but even if it did (for some reason) come to PS3, wouldnt say i'd definatley get it. I'm sure i'll get negged for this because alot of people love gears, but personally, I played all 3 on the Xbox and I actually find them quite boring.
    I'd probably play Resistance 3 instead. They may not be as well made but the resistance games just seem more fun to me.

    Apart from Gears and Halo, both shooters, what other exclusive have sold more on the 360? Gears of War 1+2 have managed 5 million+ each. The sales tally's were roughly the same with little growth seen over the original in terms of sales. Uncharted 2 sold over 4 million and doubled the tally of the previous game, showing significant growth and interest in the IP. Forza 3 sold 3 million+ in nearly 2 years yet GT5 has sold 7 million+ in just 6 months. Games like Viva Pinata and Fable, whilst good haven't seen blockbuster levels of sales of any sort. The original Crackdown, whilst brilliant, sold massive numbers thanks to the Halo 3 beta on offer. The sequel was disappointing and with no added incentive it showed that the franchise is not nearly as popular as the original would have you believe.

    I'd rather not play the numbers game, but I find it odd that 360 only owners use 2 exclusives as rules rather than exceptions when it comes to sales numbers. Apart from Gears and Halo, every other MS exclusive franchise has sold numbers in equal numbers, or less to their PS3 counter-parts.

    seriously though, if Microsoft starts loosing more exclusive games then they won't have shit left really and theyre already destroying the gamer scene with exclusive dlc (on both xbox and ps3) buyouts and locking us gamers out in the cold with only one of the systems...

    i love exclusive games and i see it as good marketing for the said system and i think GEOW needs to stay on xbox360 as they really need it along with HALO,FORZA,Fable and so on.

    Why would they want this on PS3, that console is a mess!

    It would be bad for gamers if this franchise - the pinnacle of Console graphics (with crysis on a shared #1 spot for 360)
    would go multiplatform - they would have to focus more on crossdevelopment and less on pushing 360 graphics.

    Sales wise probably yes.


    If you're going to count sales then surely we should count them through the entire first party catalogue? That would give the PS3 nearly three times as many titles meaning it would almost certainly outsell the 360 first party. Don't forget that 5 PS3 exclusives recently got a share of 140 million "sales" through the welcome back programme too.

    Did I miss the punch line?

    As ive already said, I'd pick up this game on ps3 if it came out , even though I was very disappointed by 2nd game , but if it came down to choice of Gears of war 3 or uc3 , I'd not think twice tbh. I traded my 360 with gears 1 and 2 amongst other games when uc2 came out, and although I later picked up a 360 slim , I could never be bothered to pick up gears again, or even borrow it off a friend. Uc2 online was great fun IMO and the concept of traversing areas of different heights in a fluent nature , appeals more to me than the relatively limited movement in gears. maybe gears is more fun online than offline, but I just think there's superior games out there as in terms of capaigns. As a 3rd person action game uc2 offered more than gears, and as an out and out shooter, halo whoops it's ass all day long. Gears 1 was the moment I realised this gen had really begun , as I gawped at the screen whilst playing it,but by gears 2 , I was kinda bored of what it offered .

    gears 3 looks great graphically despite the lack of AA and the mildly noticeable jaggies, and I'm sure it will sell millions upon millions, and be huge hit online whilst getting rave reviews. If people enjoy it, great!, and I'm sure many would enjoy it on ps3 , if it was available, but it isn't , and I can honestly say, I'm not gutted, as I know there's other games I'd rather play tbh. That's not a criticism of the game, or a defence of Sony and it's exclusives , or anything like that, it's just my taste in games. Hope u all enjoy the game

    Why would you even want this on PS3? I mean it's a good game (Gears 2) but it's not something that amazing. And that is one of the reasons it will never come to PS3. ME2 got ported to PS3 because it's a bloody masterpiece, that can never get old. Same can't be said for Gears.

    Next E3, Sony conference, Bleszinski: "So you remember how I said that we wouldn't touch Sony's console, well I got this call from Sony and suddenly I changed my mind (because they broke all the fingers on my left hand). Oh and it will support Move because we all decided that it makes a load of sense for the game".

    First Valve fell to Sony's mafia tricks, then Irrational...next will be Epic. May there be horses heads in everyone's beds.

    Contrary to what my profile name suggests, I'm not a massive Gears fan, but they are great games, no doubt.

    It sucks that it won't become multiplatform, because it's a fun ride.

    But please stop with the "didn't want it anyway" stuff.

    is just cover and shooting, nothing more... I remember playing the first one in my pc.... and I have greater fun playing Killswitch sometime before

    Is my memory going, or is that statement totally wrong? The first GoW was out well before the PS3, wasn't it?

    EDIT: Oh, the same month as the PS3 came out in Japan, wiki tells me.

    Surely people here are mature enough to not say that a series is overrated, and simply that it's not to their tastes? People might not like uc2, but is series overrated , or do you just not like it that much! Who's opinion defines this anyway?
    Gaming is totally subjective and some people may enjoy what is apparently to others a giant turd.
    To suggest that our own opinion of a game is the only valid one is horribly arrogant and narrow mInded
