All players will get a chance to play Super Mario 3D "before the year is over".
Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime confirmed the 2011 release during the company's E3 press conference.
"This is the first 3D Mario adventure created from scratch for portable systems," said Fils-Aime. "Once you've played Super Mario 3D I'm sure you'll agree it incorporates quite a tale." Did he mean tail? Oh look, here's Mario in a Raccoon suit.
The Super Mario 3D video also showed giant piano keys, interconnecting cogs and disappearing platforms. The game was chunky and vibrantly colourful.
