Steam, PS3 Hydrophobia Prophecy revealed
"We've got there in the end."
Downloadable action game Hydrophobia is coming to Steam and the PlayStation 3, Eurogamer can exclusively reveal.
Hydrophobia Prophecy is described as version 1.5 of the game that began life on the Xbox 360 last year.
It also follows the December 2010 release of Hydrophobia Pure on Xbox Live Arcade.
The game includes new levels – around 70 per cent of the game is new - and existing levels have been reworked.
The cover system has been improved, and combat is now possible from climbing points. The game is said to have a "proper, dramatic new ending", with an expanded storyline. There are new voice actors, too.
And the game has been augmented, developer Dark Energy Digital said, with feedback gathered from the Hydrophobia Listening Post.
"It's Hydrophobia 1.5, really," managing director Deborah Jones told Eurogamer.
"It's also not the original and it's also not Pure."
"The game is now hugely longer," DED boss Pete Jones added. "We've honed, refined and developed the stuff people liked, and we've added a bunch of new stuff that's gone down really well in usability tests."
The Steam version launches on 9th May, with a pre-order price of £7.64 / $10.19.
The PlayStation Network version, which launches shortly after the Steam version, supports the Move controller, and will be similarly priced.
Here, the navigation controller controls player movement, and the Move controller is used to control the camera and aiming.
Pete Jones said "the ultimate decision" on whether DED will bring Prophecy to the Xbox 360 is Microsoft's, but "it's our intention to do so".
The Steam version of Prophecy includes a developer feedback system, called Darknet, built in. It allows players to pause the game and send contextually augmented feedback to DED's servers in real-time.
Prophecy brings the Hydrophobia story arc to a close, but DED wants to expand on the concept with "other stories within the Hydrophobia universe".
"We want to be the first game and the first developer that truly has a one-to-one connection with the community," Jones said.
"We're a bit of a slow starter and we made mistakes in the beginning, but we've got there in the end. We've been committed heart and soul to this project. We believe in it completely. We've created something now we're all very proud of."

I can already think of how it would look and tbh i wouldn't mind
seems like a fair price if the game is indeed long.

I was so excited when I heard that the PS3 was getting steamplay, but I reckon Valve are the only ones who are going to implement this

I really enjoyed Hydrophobia Pure - I didn't want it to end, and I also recommended it to a few friends who went on to dl it - but I'd be a bit miffed at having to essentially buy it again.
Edit - I'd also like to say that I took the survey on the Hydrophobia website as soon as I finished Pure. I really do admire the way DED have gone about improving their game, and thought the least I could do was offer my feedback. Also, I liked Scoot's terrible accent

Obviously I'm assuming here, as I don't know how different the ending of Prophecy is to Pure, but I get the feeling that if I miss Prophecy and go straight to a sequel I might be missing something?
As it is, I'm enough of a fan (and the game is at a low enough price) that I would probably double dip if this appears on Live... but I might just feel a bit dirty about it
With all that said though, I truly think you guys deserve much success and good sales for your game. I can't think of any other devs that take in feedback as much as you guys and it's been a pleasure to be a part of it.

@DarkEnergy - 'IF' MS give you guys the go ahead to release the game, will it be in a similar 'patch' fashion for Pure players that Pure was to owners of the original? Also, will Pure players get this update for free or will they have to pay?

Off topic but how about showing a little love to Inferno Pool. All we need is a scoreboard showing the best times in single player inferno mode. Or at the very least what's the office record?

Doesn't matter how many bullet points they have though when they don't have the most important one:
- Good gameplay
Must admit I kinda enjoyed parts of the XBLA original though, but overall it was a frustrating experience.

I've been waiting patiently because I know it's not easy for a smaller studio to stretch themselves across many platforms or get everything perfectly right from the get-go. Yes, the original game was flawed, but DED really deserve praise for keeping at it, listening to customers and making good on their word. That kind of commitment says a lot about the people involved and will earn you great loyalty from gamers in the long run (not unlike CD Projekt with The Witcher).
Anyway, it's definitely the type of attitude I like to support, so I'll be purchasing Hydrophobia as soon as it shows up on Steam. Can't wait!

I didn't play the rest of the game before the Pure version was released. It was an inoffensive enough experience then, but didn't seem as special as the marketing blurb was making out. The extra content would be nice especially if it actually concludes anything, but I can't say I'm interested enough to revisit the whole thing on a new platform if they don't manage to update the Xbox version.
Also, the developer feedback option is an interesting feature, but shouldn't they be getting that sort of thing from their testers?

Thanks so much for all the support it really means a great deal and can't wait to hear your feedback on Prophecy

Very cool you show up in here to explain and support.
Certainly makes me more likely to take a punt on Prophecy when it shows up.
I remember reading the preview in EDGE a long time ago thinking this looked pretty cool, but as yet (as luck would have it) I haven't taken the plunge yet by buying it.

@jablonski It's a pleasure and like I've said we've been inspired by the incredible response from players too. We think Prophecy finally lives up to the potential and we're really proud of it. Hope you enjoy it if you do decide to get it and please let us know your thoughts

Also, I agree - I want a sequel!
To those saying "it failed on xbox, why should I buy it blah blah blah etc" - it's fairly cheap, so give it a try. You might enjoy it. Or maybe there'll be a trial on PSN/Steam, who knows? Personally, I think if devs are willing to listen to criticism of their game and take it on board and make changes, we should be encouraging more of this sort of behaviour. Normally, you buy your game and that's it. With this, there's a chance to have your voice heard and help make a better game in the process. Seems like an excellent idea to me.
Edited for spelling

Ah right, good old fashioned testing on students. It's good that we get some use out of them.
I'll definitely revisit the game if the updates make it past Microsoft, just not on a different platform. I was curious to see what was going to be come of the story or the powers demoed in the challenge room. I also tend to buy a lot of arcade games on sale and then don't get round to playing them at all, so getting all the way through Hydrophobia is somewhat notable as far as my gaming habits are concerned.
