Steam, PS3 Hydrophobia Prophecy revealed

"We've got there in the end."

Downloadable action game Hydrophobia is coming to Steam and the PlayStation 3, Eurogamer can exclusively reveal.

Hydrophobia Prophecy is described as version 1.5 of the game that began life on the Xbox 360 last year.

It also follows the December 2010 release of Hydrophobia Pure on Xbox Live Arcade.

The game includes new levels – around 70 per cent of the game is new - and existing levels have been reworked.

The cover system has been improved, and combat is now possible from climbing points. The game is said to have a "proper, dramatic new ending", with an expanded storyline. There are new voice actors, too.

And the game has been augmented, developer Dark Energy Digital said, with feedback gathered from the Hydrophobia Listening Post.

"It's Hydrophobia 1.5, really," managing director Deborah Jones told Eurogamer.

"It's also not the original and it's also not Pure."

"The game is now hugely longer," DED boss Pete Jones added. "We've honed, refined and developed the stuff people liked, and we've added a bunch of new stuff that's gone down really well in usability tests."

The Steam version launches on 9th May, with a pre-order price of £7.64 / $10.19.

The PlayStation Network version, which launches shortly after the Steam version, supports the Move controller, and will be similarly priced.

Here, the navigation controller controls player movement, and the Move controller is used to control the camera and aiming.

Pete Jones said "the ultimate decision" on whether DED will bring Prophecy to the Xbox 360 is Microsoft's, but "it's our intention to do so".

The Steam version of Prophecy includes a developer feedback system, called Darknet, built in. It allows players to pause the game and send contextually augmented feedback to DED's servers in real-time.

Prophecy brings the Hydrophobia story arc to a close, but DED wants to expand on the concept with "other stories within the Hydrophobia universe".

"We want to be the first game and the first developer that truly has a one-to-one connection with the community," Jones said.

"We're a bit of a slow starter and we made mistakes in the beginning, but we've got there in the end. We've been committed heart and soul to this project. We believe in it completely. We've created something now we're all very proud of."

    And so it starts..
  • hippyjump #2 1 year ago

I srsly hope they really mean this:
    Graphics

Enhanced environmental lighting throughout the game
    High resolution textures
    Updated video texture work
Hugely improved particle systems throughout the game
    Depth of field effects implemented
    MLAA anti-aliasing
    Improved lighting and shadowing solutions

I can already think of how it would look and tbh i wouldn't mind :)

seems like a fair price if the game is indeed long.
  • randompanda #3 1 year ago

Plastic surgery, hanging out with new friends and with a more intuitive interface! She's still a bit too keen though, and she doesn't take criticism well. Think I'll let one of you lot play with her instead.
  • reelbigkris #4 1 year ago

But can I unlock a Steam version while purchasing a ps3 version and vice versa.

I was so excited when I heard that the PS3 was getting steamplay, but I reckon Valve are the only ones who are going to implement this :(
  • NimbusTLD #5 1 year ago

I'm glad they have finally officially announced this :) I was unhappy with the framerate on the 360 version and was waiting to play it properly on PC. Can't find it for pre-purchase on Steam yet though :/
  • richarddavies #6 1 year ago

There really trying to flog a dead horse with Hydrophobia aren't they? I assume they put alot of capital into the game. I got it off live the day the pure version came out but haven't finished it yet. Not necessarily a bad game but it just didn't grip me.
  • dewington #7 1 year ago

I never heard if Hydrophobia was actually meant to be any good after the refinements in the Pure version... I got the updated trial version and it didn't seem significantly different. Does anyone know if it's worth all the fuss? It's admirable of Dark Energy to respond to all the feedback and such, but even without its technical failings it never really grabbed me. And you know the saying - you can polish a turd, but you can't buff a shit to a shine.
  • Doctor_What #8 1 year ago

Is it a dead horse? It seems like a pretty solid and well-supported game. For the money, I'm interested.
  • wowami #9 1 year ago

so will the xbox version be updated to this one automatically or was it a beta- albeit a charged one
  • Ignatius_Cheese #10 1 year ago

Still doesn't change the awful voice acting and rubbish plot though...
  • DarkEnergy #11 1 year ago

@dewington - We received a really positive response to Pure from players, there were only a handful of new reviews but they were all pretty good. It would have been easier to simply port Pure across since it was well received be we felt we owed it to all the people who went out of their way to participate in the listening post and who gave us such brilliant feedback to Pure to go the extra mile. Prophecy is a mammoth reinvention of the game so if you liked Pure you'll love Hydrophobia Prophecy :)
  • siro #12 1 year ago

Way too long features list, noone is going to read all those bullet points.

The guys seem alright, wish them the best. Hope the game is really much improved this time around.
  • Markusdragon #13 1 year ago

It's less flogging a dead horse and more desperately working to keep their prematurely born foal alive.
  • DarkEnergy #14 1 year ago

@Ignatius_Cheese Actually that is exactly what it does do if you read the list :)
  • Ignatius_Cheese #15 1 year ago

@DarkEnergy - Apologies! You are quite correct :o)

How about a 360 port then?
  • dadrester #16 1 year ago

EUROGAMER! will we get a review of this? I was always intrigued by the tech, just never the game.
  • DarkEnergy #17 1 year ago

@Ignatius_Cheese - No worries! As for XBLA, sorry to quote the article again but...

Pete Jones said "the ultimate decision" on whether DED will bring Prophecy to the Xbox 360 is Microsoft's, but "it's our intention to do so".

    ;D
  • dadrester #18 1 year ago

oooh. That "darknet" stuff sounds interesting. I think if nothing else this deserves to do well because it's iterative design that's actually listening to the community.
  • DarkEnergy #19 1 year ago

@siro Thanks kindly for the support - we tried to keep the features list as short as possible but we want everyone to know just how comprehensive the changes are. :)
  • richarddavies #20 1 year ago

I just bought it because there a Manchester based development team and that's where im from. Just support local trade for local people.
  • spiderignacio #21 1 year ago

I admire the effort of the creator and I will give Hydrophobia a chance. This studio is on their way to grow, and I was attracted by the game but never got it because of the bad reviews.

The game is attractive and I will buy the remasterd version in PSN (If it works again someday...)

I support Dark Energy, count with me!!
  • DarkEnergy #22 1 year ago

@dadrester Well spotted! I was waiting for someone to pick up on this. We were, and I say this with hand on heart, blown away by the response to the listening post and the bucket load of kind and supportive messages we got when we released Pure. It really showed us how much gamers appreciated being involved in the development process and having feedback listened too. Darknet is an extension of that philosophy as a way of thanking all those who took part. Basically you can pause the game at any time and send us feedback directly to our server (purely optional of course). You feedback can be augmented with data about the game to help us understand your feedback. We believe there should be a two way relationship between players and developer and in the 21st century there is absolutely no reason why gamers shouldn't be able to have a voice in the game itself :)
  • Ror1984 #23 1 year ago

Does this mean no second chapter for 360 then..? It seems to be the case that if MS greenlight this for XBL, you'd have to buy this version of the game and start over again to get more of the story... :/

I really enjoyed Hydrophobia Pure - I didn't want it to end, and I also recommended it to a few friends who went on to dl it - but I'd be a bit miffed at having to essentially buy it again.

Edit - I'd also like to say that I took the survey on the Hydrophobia website as soon as I finished Pure. I really do admire the way DED have gone about improving their game, and thought the least I could do was offer my feedback. Also, I liked Scoot's terrible accent :(

  • DarkEnergy #24 1 year ago

@spiderignacio Thanks kindly :) It really does mean a lot to the team here that people are supporting our efforts, hope you enjoy it and of course let us know your feedback via Darknet
  • richarddavies #25 1 year ago

I'llw ait until I see the game in action before I make an informed decision. I thought the idea of Hydrophobia was a great one but the execution lacked in some areas. At least your trying to rectify it I suppose which is alot more than 99% of devs can say. That Darknet sounds pretty awesome too by the way.
  • space_ace #26 1 year ago

one bullet point inflated into three, nice work:

    - Re-designed locations add variety and drama
    - Spectacular new environments introduced
    - Reworked environmental assets
  • DarkEnergy #27 1 year ago

@Ror1984 It doesn't change anything regarding sequels, it just represents us wanting to respond to the support and feedback we got from people like yourself when we released Pure and make an even better game. Prophecy is not just an update, it's a comprehensive reinvention which is much longer with a new ending, new mechanics, entirely new levels, reworked story, new voice acting and much more. We've kept the price low too - if it does tempt you you'll find it's almost a new experience. Oh and the water powers are now part of the main single player campaign.
  • DarkEnergy #28 1 year ago

@richarddavies Fair play, there will be a trailer on the way so you'll have the opportunity to see it in action. We feel we've addressed all the flaws now and more... it's also a massive expansion. Thanks for the support re. Darknet it's the positive feedback from players which drove us to develop it in the first place!
  • DarkEnergy #29 1 year ago

@space ace Yep perhaps we didn't word that clearly enough, read that as 1. Existing environments have been re-skinned 2. About 70% of the game is entirely NEW environments with new gameplay and 3. Interactive assets in all the environments have been reworked, including destructable / combat assets and cover points.
  • Ror1984 #30 1 year ago

@DarkEnergy - Thanks for the reply. So Prophecy is essentially like a re-imagining of the first chapter in a sense? I'm still not quite sure what to think to be honest - if a sequel does turn up - and I do hope it does, you guys deserve to keep making games, and I'd like to see where it goes - then I'd imagine it will pick up where Prophecy leaves off, rather than where Pure leaves off?

Obviously I'm assuming here, as I don't know how different the ending of Prophecy is to Pure, but I get the feeling that if I miss Prophecy and go straight to a sequel I might be missing something?

As it is, I'm enough of a fan (and the game is at a low enough price) that I would probably double dip if this appears on Live... but I might just feel a bit dirty about it ;)

With all that said though, I truly think you guys deserve much success and good sales for your game. I can't think of any other devs that take in feedback as much as you guys and it's been a pleasure to be a part of it.
  • StolenGlory #31 1 year ago

After playing Hydrophobia through to completion, I can safely say that I enjoyed my time with it for sure. The VA obviously needs some work (hence the hiring of new actors I guess) but I thought it was a solid game with decent production values.

@DarkEnergy - 'IF' MS give you guys the go ahead to release the game, will it be in a similar 'patch' fashion for Pure players that Pure was to owners of the original? Also, will Pure players get this update for free or will they have to pay?

  • johnnyquicknives #32 1 year ago

    @Dark Energy
Off topic but how about showing a little love to Inferno Pool. All we need is a scoreboard showing the best times in single player inferno mode. Or at the very least what's the office record? :)
  • DarkEnergy #33 1 year ago

@Ror1984 You've very welcome. Yes a re-imagining of the first episode is a good way to look at it, and as you suggest the ending alone does take the series in a new direction. The game is much longer, but we've tried to keep the price down too so if you do end up playing Prophecy I think you'll be glad you did so. Thanks again for the support - like I said we do believe in a too way relationship, and it's only because of the amazing support of player that we're able to push even further with this title and with the Darknet system. Long may it continue!
  • DarkEnergy #34 1 year ago

@StolenGlory Thanks kindly, glad you enjoyed the original (in which case you'll love Prophecy). As the interview said we'd love to do an XBLA version but the ultimate decision is Microsoft's and the exact form it would take would need to be discussed with them but of course we'll push for the best possible deal for gamers as we have for Prophecy on Steam.
  • WinstonChurchill #35 1 year ago

I started and finished Hydrophobia Pure over the weekend and, by the end, I quite liked Kate's voice actress. It was nice to hear a Dubliner and all of the quasi-Atlanticism that goes with the accent.
  • DarkEnergy #36 1 year ago

@johnnyquicknives WOO! Inferno Pool baby, now there's a bolt from the blue. Inferno still remains one of our favourite games that we developed and we STILL play multiplayer here in the studio. The office record for single player endurance is 16:24 - one of the programmers got it while in a zen-like state. The secret is to make sure you never miss a pot because the multiplayer builds with each successful pot but is wiped out as soon as you miss a ball. I can't believe I'm talking about Inferno again it really takes me back! :)
  • DarkEnergy #37 1 year ago

@WinstonChurchill Good stuff and well done on completing Pure. I take it you fought in the corridors and the VFDs, the Cyclos and the Loading Bays, the Plaza and the Station and you never, ever surrendered?
  • CaptainQuint #38 1 year ago

Played and finished the Pure version. Game was a 6/10 for me. Entertaining enough but instantly forgettable. Well worth the 400MS I paid for it.
  • DarkEnergy #39 1 year ago

@CaptainQuint Fair play :) We thought Pure was a solid foundation for us, but Prophecy is superior in every way so we're confident people are gunna love it. If you happen to pick it up let us know what you think and remember you can provide detailed feedback via Darknet :)
  • PanStre #40 1 year ago

"Dramatic new ending completes the story arc."

I take it this means the next two episodes ain't happening.

  • Jonathan_Fakenham #41 1 year ago

Ah, game design by bullet points, haven't seen that much in the last 10 years..

Doesn't matter how many bullet points they have though when they don't have the most important one:
    - Good gameplay

Must admit I kinda enjoyed parts of the XBLA original though, but overall it was a frustrating experience.
  • DarkEnergy #42 1 year ago

@PanStre Not at all - I better clarify on cos I can see how it's misleading. What this means is that the episode 1 story arc is fully a properly completed, but the wider story arc will continue. Put is this way, you now get to destroy the Death Star but you still don't know who your daddy is ;)
  • hana_fubuki #43 1 year ago

YES, finally! I'd been hoping for a Steam version for ages. Hydrophobia always struck me as the kind of game that would do great on Steam, where there seems to be more of an audience for independent developers.

I've been waiting patiently because I know it's not easy for a smaller studio to stretch themselves across many platforms or get everything perfectly right from the get-go. Yes, the original game was flawed, but DED really deserve praise for keeping at it, listening to customers and making good on their word. That kind of commitment says a lot about the people involved and will earn you great loyalty from gamers in the long run (not unlike CD Projekt with The Witcher).

Anyway, it's definitely the type of attitude I like to support, so I'll be purchasing Hydrophobia as soon as it shows up on Steam. Can't wait!
    Edited by hana_fubuki at 26/04/11 @ 13:21
  • DarkEnergy #44 1 year ago

@Jonathan_Fakenham Fair enough - but our feedback shows that overall people liked the gameplay in Pure. Prophecy gameplay is massively improved though, if you liked parts of the original I think you'll be pleasantly surprised just how good it now is :) Either way you can let us know exactly what you think via Darknet :)
  • jablonski #45 1 year ago

But do they still come from planet Zeist?
  • johnnyquicknives #46 1 year ago

@DarkEnergy: Cheers for the reply looks like I still have a few minutes to go. It really is a fantastic game, me and my friends still play local multiplayer all the time, such a shame it never managed to gather the online following it deserves.
  • DarkEnergy #47 1 year ago

@hana_fubuki Thanks so much, that really means a lot to all of the team. As I've said earlier it's the incredible support from the players and the amazing feedback which has driven us and enabled is to create this reinvention and to develop Darknet. As you say Steam is a brilliant platform for us - not least because we can update quickly and often to better serve the fans! :)
  • DarkEnergy #48 1 year ago

@johnnyquicknives That really is awesome to hear, thanks so much. We all really adored that little game and it's so great to hear from somebody who still enjoys it as much as we do :)
  • Toothball #49 1 year ago

My biggest problem with the first game was that whoever they'd found to play Scoot had one of the worst Scottish accents I've heard for a while now. Really didn't help that he also did a substantial part of the talking. I didn't understand why they couldn't have either found an actual Scottish person, or just cast the character with a non-Scottish accent. Quite glad to see they got someone else in.

I didn't play the rest of the game before the Pure version was released. It was an inoffensive enough experience then, but didn't seem as special as the marketing blurb was making out. The extra content would be nice especially if it actually concludes anything, but I can't say I'm interested enough to revisit the whole thing on a new platform if they don't manage to update the Xbox version.

Also, the developer feedback option is an interesting feature, but shouldn't they be getting that sort of thing from their testers?
  • DarkEnergy #50 1 year ago

@Toothball Fair enough - changing Scoot was obviously at the top of our agenda. We're really proud of Prophecy, it feels like we've finally realised the brilliant potential of this game. If you do change your mind and decide to give it a look I think you'll be surprised just how good it is - but let us know what you think. Darknet was our way of thanking all those who participated and obviously doesn't replace testing for bugs or indeed the pre-release play testing we do with people like the University of Bolton. However we don't see why players in the 21st century shouldn't be given the opportunity to tell us exactly what they think too if they so wish. It's entirely optional, but we were so surprised with how much players demonstrated their enthusiasm for the concept last time that we just had to take it further :)
  • DarkEnergy #51 1 year ago

Right chaps! I'm trying to make sure I respond to everybody and answer all your questions but I gotta eat too, so I'm just off to grab a bite. I'll make sure I respond to further comments when I get back, in the meantime you can get all the info over at [link url=http://www.hydrophobia-game.com

  • jablonski #52 1 year ago

    @DarkEnergy

Very cool you show up in here to explain and support.
Certainly makes me more likely to take a punt on Prophecy when it shows up.

I remember reading the preview in EDGE a long time ago thinking this looked pretty cool, but as yet (as luck would have it) I haven't taken the plunge yet by buying it.
  • wowami #53 1 year ago

i might have missed it but...Will the current xbox game be automatically updated to this version?
  • Kenshin001 #54 1 year ago

Didn't the game flop on 360? Was kind of interested when this was announced but after the poor reviews of the first version on 360 and exclusivity deal with MS I have little inclination to buy it. Feels like a desperate attempt to recoup the investment.
  • richarddavies #55 1 year ago

More of a request really but with you listening to the feedback of the good folks of EG I was wonderin if you might see if you can fit FHUTA somewhere in the game. Maybe as a bit of graffiti on the wall or maybe even as a catchphrase for the scottish bloke. I think it would really take the game into a whole new dimension of awesome...possibly.
  • DarkEnergy #56 1 year ago

Okay, popped home for a quick egg sandwish before heading back to Dark Energy towers

@jablonski It's a pleasure and like I've said we've been inspired by the incredible response from players too. We think Prophecy finally lives up to the potential and we're really proud of it. Hope you enjoy it if you do decide to get it and please let us know your thoughts :)
  • DarkEnergy #57 1 year ago

@wowami We'd like to put Prophecy on XBLA, but the ultimate decision is down to Microsoft :)
  • DarkEnergy #58 1 year ago

@Kenshin001 No not really. Admittedly we didn't quite get it right initially but the update Hydrophobia Pure was received very positively by players and the handful of sites the re-reviewed it. Hydrophobia Prophecy is a massive improvement on that so I think you'll enjoy it if you decide to take a look
  • DarkEnergy #59 1 year ago

@richarddavies Haa! Thanks for the feedback, we'll put that one down as a maybe ;)
  • DarkEnergy #60 1 year ago

Right enough egg sandwich and daytime TV, back to Dark Energy towers... see you soon! :D
  • JamieR #61 1 year ago

I loved this game so I'll be buying it again.
  • DarkEnergy #62 1 year ago

@JamieR Thanks kindly, great to hear. Don't forget to pre-purchase on Steam to get 15% off :)
  • IronGiant #63 1 year ago

Will keep an eye out for this, if the trailer looks good then at that price I'll give it a go on my PS3 :)
  • jablonski #64 1 year ago

  • KDR_11k #67 1 year ago

I only started playing Pure last week, seems nice but the way I'd improve combat would be by making enemies move around more so they don't all sit in the area where you already used all the environmental traps to kill the previous guys.
  • DarkEnergy #68 1 year ago

@KDR_11K Thanks for the feedback - you'll find the combat in Prophecy is much improved, let us know how you get on with the rest of the game :)
  • jackdoe #69 1 year ago

I was considering getting the game during an XBLA sale, but I tried the demo and it turned me off instantly. Poor voice acting, poor controls, and poor cutscenes was what did it in for me.
  • Quixz #70 1 year ago

This was a great game. I completed it before the 360 got the graphical update a price drop. Bring on part 2!
  • ucankurbaga #71 1 year ago

So it failed on xbox360 and now its coming to ps3 & pc? No thx..
  • Ror1984 #72 1 year ago

@Quixz - seeing as you played it before the Pure update, you should definitely have another play through it, especially as Pure was applied as a free update for those that had already purchased. You might even enjoy it a bit more :)

    Also, I agree - I want a sequel!

To those saying "it failed on xbox, why should I buy it blah blah blah etc" - it's fairly cheap, so give it a try. You might enjoy it. Or maybe there'll be a trial on PSN/Steam, who knows? Personally, I think if devs are willing to listen to criticism of their game and take it on board and make changes, we should be encouraging more of this sort of behaviour. Normally, you buy your game and that's it. With this, there's a chance to have your voice heard and help make a better game in the process. Seems like an excellent idea to me.

    Edited for spelling

You're absolutely right and it's only because of the great support and feedback from players that we decided to create Darknet to allow player to send us feedback from within the game itself. @Quixz if you liked the original you will love Prophecy - it's superior in every way as well as longer and with 70% new levels, content, mechanics, reworked story and new ending. You even get to use Hydro Kinetic water power in the main campaign now.

Oh and by the way, the STEAM STORE PAGE IS LIVE. You can see the official trailer there and pre-purchase for 15% off:

Makes me wonder whether "the ultimate decision" has something to do with money moving from Microsoft to DED... :)

    @DarkEnergy

Ah right, good old fashioned testing on students. It's good that we get some use out of them.

I'll definitely revisit the game if the updates make it past Microsoft, just not on a different platform. I was curious to see what was going to be come of the story or the powers demoed in the challenge room. I also tend to buy a lot of arcade games on sale and then don't get round to playing them at all, so getting all the way through Hydrophobia is somewhat notable as far as my gaming habits are concerned.
