Hefty Fallout: New Vegas patch goes live

PC first, consoles to follow.

A comprehensive new patch for Bethesda's action RPG sequel Fallout: New Vegas has just gone live for PC users, with consoles to follow shortly.

As promised earlier this month, update 1.3 rebalances a number of weapons and "contains optimisations and stability improvements".

According to a post on the game's official site, the patch is expected to hit consoles "by the end of the week."

Here are the full patch notes, as detailed on Steam:

Guns changes:

  • Automatic Guns - SMGs, the Assault Carbine, and the LMG are more accurate across the board. They're also more durable. 12.7mm SMG mag capacity increased to 21.
  • Shotguns - Buckshot has received a x1.2 inherent DAM mod. This slightly incentivizes using buckshot over slugs when enemy armor is not an issue. Magnum buckshot has a x1.3 DAM mod and a small amount of DT bypass. Spread for many shotguns has been lowered.
  • Hunting Rifle, Anti-Materiel Rifle - Hunting Rifle and AMR now have the lowest spread of all rifles. Hunting Rifle RoF increased, Crit Chance set to x2. Anti-Materiel Rifle's Crit DAM has been raised from 80 to 110 to make it more viable when compared to the Gobi.
  • Sniper Rifle, Gobi Campaign Scout Rifle - Sniper Rifle and Gobi now have a higher RoF and lower AP cost. Both have x2 Crit Chance. Gobi has increased DAM and much higher Crit DAM over the Sniper Rifle.
  • That Gun - That Gun is now a slow-firing hand cannon that does huge DAM firing 5.56mm out of a short barrel.
  • Hunting Revolver - RoF increased.
  • Service Rifle - DAM slightly lowered, firing animation changed to the one used by Marksman Carbine, RoF dramatically increased. Spread decreased.
  • Silenced .22 Pistol, SMG - Crit DAM and Crit Chance significantly increased.
  • 5mm Ammo - Base ammo has 10 points of DT bypass. AP variants have 25 points of DT bypass. This affects the Assault Carbine, Minigun, and CZ57 Avenger.
  • .308 JSP - DAM mult reduced from x1.5 to x1.3. x2 CND degradation effect added.
  • Lever-Action Rifles - Cowboy Repeater, Trail Carbine, Brush Gun - RoF has been slightly reduced, AP costs have been significantly increased, and spread has been slightly increased. Cowboy Repeater Custom Action RoF increase has been reduced. La Longue Carabine spread has been significantly lowered.

Explosives changes:

  • Dynamite - Larger explosion radius.
  • Frag and Plasma Grenades – DAM increased.
  • 25mm Grenades - Slightly increased DAM on the explosion.
  • 40mm Grenades - Significantly higher DAM on the explosion.
  • Missile Launcher / Fat Man - Now have much better zoom FoV and good accuracy. Missile and Fat Man projectiles (not the explosion) have a large base DAM. Both are extremely effective on direct hits, but still potent even if a direct hit is not scored. N.B.: Listed DAM on weapons assumes a direct hit!

Energy weapons changes:

  • Gatling Laser - Base DAM is higher. Against heavily armored targets, this is still a poor weapon. Against lightly armored targets, especially with Over Charge or Max Charge ECPs + Focus Optics + Laser Commander, it has extraordinary DPS.
  • Tesla Cannon, Tesla-Beaton Prototype - These now consume far less ammo per shot and can be fired several times before a reload. DAM is beefy with an additional 2 second DoT.
  • Pew-Pew - Lower ammo capacity, consumes far fewer ECs per shot. Still a two-shot weapon.

Melee weapon and unarmed changes:

  • Ripper, Chainsaw, Thermic Lance - DAM lowered, all ignore DR/DT.
  • Bladed Gauntlet, Mantis Gauntlet - Ignore DR/DT flags removed (were not supposed to be marked as such). Mantis Gauntlet animation/sound fixed.

Perk changes:

  • Splash Damage – Functions properly.
  • The Professional - 10mm Pistol, SMG added to perk list

Man, I hope they''ll fix the mission bugs on the 360. I really want to complete the game.

So many lovely guns, so hard to organise in the crappy inventory interface.

Anyone know if there's a way to put the comments back on a separate page from the article?

There not still patching this buggy terd after all this time. LOL
  • jablonski #5 1 year ago

Question - you know the big fix that came out a while back that solved loading times etc?
Does that make a difference to a game that is already in progress, or will I have to junk the save file and start again for the patch to fix load times?

hmm, I hope they have plans to fix the buggy president assassination quest, its funny how stuttery/horrible that one mission is. I still proper love this game though!!

Can a moderator please ban or mute milki-tea for spoiling the ending in every Fallout article?

are the missions still bugged?...it made me get rid of the game some two weeks after release, with the intention of buying it again when patched, but thinking now i may wait until the GOTY version,or whatever it will be called

Well, F:NV has become near unplayable for me over the last few days. Every session the game is freezing and crashing. My save file is over 5mb now and apparently the PS3 structure means it's gonna crash more or less every time.

It's a shame, after pumping 40 hours into it I really cba to be dealing with all this anymore.

Did anyone else have ugly clipping issues with NV? my (female) character's pip boy is mutated into her arm. Also with certain guns her hand appears slightly detached from her arm. It seems to depend on what armor/ gun im equipping.
Anyway, its great that Obsidian is still supporting this very cool game, makes me want to play it again.

Thats not the full change list, just the weapon related tweaks. There are bug fixes and stability increases, apparently it runs a lot smoother now, not that I can see because the patch still isn't out for UK PS3.
  • Ged42 #12 1 year ago

The 'That Gun' is now a handcannon!

I can't decide if they've made my main gun cool or shit.
  • levitate #13 1 year ago

Wow, I thought they'd forgotten about this game after they released it last year. I know I did.
  • HornsDino #14 1 year ago

Well, this is baffling - was there really any big demand for rebalancing of weapons in a single player game? Hopefully they fixed a few bugs while they were in there.

TBH, the last jumbo patch seemed to make the game smoother for me, (360 version). However, I'm finding that the longer time spent in-game (> 30 hrs approx), it starts being laggy and a bit flaky. My PS3 mate says the same, though he completed a 100 hour game without any real show-stoppers. No problems with corrupt game saves yet, though I manual save regularly on all big RPGs, and so should you ;)

  • DrMGinius #16 1 year ago

@HornsDino One of the great things about singleplayer games is that NPCs don't whine. Apparently they did fix the crashes, but it's a tad late if you ask me.
  • darkphoenix #17 1 year ago

    no level-cap lift?
    fu.
  • Sevens #18 1 year ago

Almost as good as releasing a quality product right away. No, actually not even close.
  • Serai #19 1 year ago

    Why would they buff Gobi?
  • TheGuvernor #20 1 year ago

Will it make the game look current gen?!

Always amazes me how people will moan about bugs in a complex rpg - comparing it to a simplistic linear crappy shooter like halo (for example).

RPG's are REALLY complex to make, and when you consider the (near infinite) number of scenarios they have to cope with - it's not surprising bugs go through. It's not as if everything it's a linear shooter where you know exactly what the player can and will do ...
  • Jonny5Alive7 #22 1 year ago

That's all well and good but isn't it a bit late, surely most people have completed it and moved on.
  • StooMonster #23 1 year ago

Not too late for me, I've barely started this on my PC and have been working through other games whilst waiting for this fix -- in a similar position with Crysis 2 that doesn't work at all with multi-GPU set up, I'll play it when it's fixed.

Sounds like it's time to go back to F:NV :)

Its getting to the point where its not worth playing new games till they've been out for at least 6 months. Which in turn means its not worth buying them for at least 6 months after release. Which means they are usually cheaper then of course........
So these publishers may think they are getting away with something by not testing properly and making a bit more cash at our expense, but long term they are setting a trend which may well bite them very hard. I doubt they are capable of thinking that far ahead.

PS3 Fallout 3 and New Vegas both had the same issue for me: as the save file heads up to six to eight megabytes, it starts locking up once an hour or so. I just save often and reboot when it happens. It is annoying.

I agree, though, that the big problem here is basically that these sorts of games are just so complex. I'd rather have them and have them buggy than not have them because they'd have to triple the development budget to clean them up to the level of a more linear game.
