Nintendo: Mario 3DS is Galaxy meets SM64

Raccoon suit confirmed.

The forthcoming 3DS Super Mario title is a cross between Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 64, so says creator Shigeru Miyamoto.

While discussing the title with Edge today, Miyamoto promised that the game was "completely original" and would be released this year.

"It's a combination of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario on N64," he explained.

"It won't convey the message if I talk to you today, but if you play it at E3 that will give you more understanding of what I'm talking about."

He also insisted that the handheld's 3D effect would help players better judge distances between platforms, and confirmed speculation that the game would see Super Mario Bros. 3's fan-favourite raccoon suit return.

"It's what you think it is," said Miyamoto, referring to a the much-discussed 'tail' on the game's logo. "You probably know what's going to happen using that character."

The game is being developed by the same internal team responsible for both Super Mario Galaxy and last year's stupidly brilliant sequel.

    I would imagine that there are so many assets and ideas transferable to the 3ds hardware, that this game should be ready very soon.

    *please*

    While I know this will be for me a "day 1 purchase" and undeniably brilliant, as 99.9% are, Il fail to understand how a fusion between Mario 64 and Galaxy constitutes as "new"...still, I cant wait to find out.

    Thats how Nintendo gets you, they release a new console, overpriced for what it is, maybe a bit gimmicky and outdated, then they release another unmissable Mario or Zelda title, and we can't resist, we enjoy the hell out if it, then it's over, and we're back to square one, complaining about first party software drought, declining standards and lacklustre third party support, until the next amazing first party title.... someone needs to design a Nintendo cycle flowchart.

    I know I'm in for hate with this comment, even though I'll act against my better judgement and buy a 3DS just for Mario... But this is why Nintendo will never be out of the console business, no matter their misssteps, we just can't resist those rare first party titles!

    Ton of great stuff on the DS from Nintendo and 3rd parties. Plenty of good stuff announced for 3DS already from Nintendo and 3rd parties.

    Played all the games a week each on rental and bought 3 3rd party and Pilotwings as a result. There is plenty of software to back up the release for me. I still want nintendogs because I saw my gf rent it and how sad she was to hand her puppy back in blockbuster lol.

    How in the world, during a thread which is basically all Nintendo-love, has FenderMaster been negged for basically going "Nintendo are FUCKING AMAZING"?

    eh... I suggested that there would be game droughts... I also suggested Nintendo hardware is gimmicky, outdated and overpriced. Thats enough for hate from some people.

    the neg/+ system was designed for self moderation, but people only use it to say YES I DO AGREE WITH YOU! or NO YOUR OPINION IS DIFFERENT TO MINE! Stupid really, but there you go...

    Just give me a decent reason to turn on my 3DS (after wiping off the dust and searching the house for the charger) - I'll take anything at the moment.

    Sorry, have you played galaxy 2? That is the ultimate 'rehash' but still manages to be one of the best games of this generation, and in many eyes ever.

    Bring on the rehash, can't fucking wait.

    Since when is it called the Raccoon suit? It's ALWAYS been the Tanooki suit afaik:

    This could, no should be the best thing to hit handheld gaming since Tetris.

    Nice, like the world needs yet another rehash from N...

    What is with some people moaning about lack of originality in Mario games? What do they want Nintendo to do, introduce God of War style finishing moves where Mario places a Koopa-Troopa's head on a "!" block and kerb-stomps it? Sega totally fucked up the Sonic franchise by experimenting too much. Even with the core mechanics of the game virtually the same as Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy 2 had as much innovation, fresh ideas and creativity as almost every other major release last year put together. It most certainly was not a rehash.

    I can't wait for this!

    @charming_fox:

    Mario wears the raccoon suit when he gets a super leaf; he wears the tanooki suit when he picks up a tanooki suit.

    3D platformers definitely could be the 3Ds biggest strength. If they can get the controls right this should be good (well we know on PSP only one analog nub can be inhibiting for 3D games, but the touchscreen may help out)

    What point does the plus button have if it's not to say "yes I agree with you"? If it was just for self moderation you'd only need the neg button.
  • charming_fox #30 1 year ago

    @Baron.... shit, now I want to kill myself
  • Shinetop #31 1 year ago

    I never realised there was a difference between the raccoon suit and the tanooki suit. It suddenly feels like my entire childhood was a lie. Nothing is true anymore.
  • Jay1983 #32 1 year ago

    Raccoon suit lets you fly.
    Tanooki suit lets you fly AND turn into a statue.

    Raccoon = good.
    Tanooki = full of win

    I was pretty disappointed with Galaxy 2, I didn't like the change to smaller and more linear levels. Galaxy 1 and 64 had less levels, but they were much bigger with more objectives. I really hope it's more of a return to that style of gameplay.

    I feel like a little boy again, so excited! Best news ever! :D
  • SG #35 1 year ago

    I think the 'in-between' could be in reference to how SM64's caps and SMG's power-ups work; in an original way that we haven't conceived. But then there's also the whole panting worlds vs galaxies and the physics and stuff as well.
  • The_Bloody_Kettle #36 1 year ago

    Okay. I'm totally sold. I'm going to get myself a 3DS.
    Only around June though, for Zelda and then this.
    It is going to be legendary!
  • smelly #37 1 year ago

    @Dreddnaught: Let me guess.. As compared to:

    Walk down corridor, move cursor over something, press fire button, move down corridor, watch 10 minute long boring cutscene, and repeat?

    Which is obviously SIGNIFICANTLY superior and better.,..
  • orangpelupa #38 1 year ago

    @smelly
    FF XIII?

    btw i just wish Nintendo release 3DS Lite or something fast... the current price is out of my reach :(
  • DrMGinius #39 1 year ago

    I don't know if it's good or bad that a game for a portable device looks better than most Wii games...
  • smelly #40 1 year ago

    @orangpelupa: Nope - pretty much every fps in existence.. So 99% of all games on the 360...

  • SpaceMonkey77 #41 1 year ago

    You lot are suckers. Another Mario game, and you all drop trou and lube up for Nintendo. Sure it'll probably be cool and probably sell loads. Pardon me if I don't get excited.

    What's wrong with you, Nintendo? No new game concepts to push? What else is new.
