Super Mario 3DS due out this year?

Miyamoto certainly hopes so.

The new 3DS Mario platformer briefly shown off last month at GDC could be on shelves before the year is out, according to Shigeru Miyamoto.

Speaking in a video interview with French site Gamesblog.fr, Nintendo's veteran creative lead said, "I promise to do all I can to deliver the new Mario game this year."

Aside from the four screenshots Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata showed off during his GDC presentation in March very little is known about the title.

It's being developed by Nintendo's EAD Tokyo outpost – the same team responsible for the Super Mario Galaxy games - and a full reveal is expected at E3 in June.

    This'll be good.

    What's the betting it'll start with mario having to stomp a goomba under a few bricks, one of which contains a mushroom, in a joyfully nostalgic (READ : annoyingly unoriginal) nod to the first Mario game.

    Like. Every. 2D. Mario.

    It's just gonna be the same game we've all been playing for the last 20 years, only more sticky outy.

    Begin the neg.

    @Dreddnaught... that's where you're WRONG... the 3DS has more of a receeded 3D effect.

    He might have said this to silence the many news stories currently flying around saying 'the 3DS bubble has burst'.

    Super Mario 64 blew me away and I hope they can repeat that on the new Ninty :)

    I believe that galaxy 2 may be the best game I have ever played, so I cannot wait...
  • TheTingler #12 1 year ago

    It won't be though, will it?

    It's not a bad thing, I fully expect to be waiting until 2012 before I play Mario 3DS - but for god's sake, don't get people's hopes up Nintendo. It's not going to happen - you know it as much as we do.

    I'd love it to be out this year but I want it to only come out once Miyamoto thinks it's ready.

    Mario 3D is probably the only reason why anyone would buy the 3DS. Make it happen fast.

    I think Dreaddnaught really believes it is a 2D Mario Bros game. Didn't see the images then. Can't wait for this, hope they can produce something equal in quality to the Galaxy games in this timeframe. This is following two 10/10 games and 3DS could use a killer app.

    @Dreaddnaught

    Even if that was the case, so what? I don't care if Mario games never change. They are perfect the way they are.
  • Mr.Spo #18 1 year ago

    Miyamoto exists somewhere in the future, so this year actually means 2013...

    But in all seriousness, if they have this ready for the end of the year, I'd be very happy. Nintendo admitted to holding Galaxy 2 back so that it didn't get lost in the wake of NSMB Wii, meaning it was finished several months in advance of its summer release, so EAD Tokyo have probably around 15-18 months of development time on this by now.

    One thing I love about Nintendo is they don't rush their games. They release them when they are perfect. Especially the Mario games. They can't really afford to release a sub-par Mario because we all expect perfection. In a way the wait is our own fault for always expecting such high quality! I really don't mind waiting at all though. I bought a Wii just to play Super Mario Galaxy 2, and that game alone was worth the £150 and without a doubt one if the best games I have ever played. Yes, it hasn't strayed from it's collecting coins and jumping on enemies routes, (it is a platformer afterall), but my word, what a platformer it is! I am 25 and love lots of different kinds of games. I have played other platforming games recently but none come close to the sheer genius on display in every Mario game. Everything about the experience playing SMG2 put a smile on my face and during the time I was playing it, I felt a sense of wonder, I hadn't in a long time. Mario has heart and every good Character/game/film/book/piece of music does. In a world full of Call of Duty's and money grabbing corporations, it is nice to see that at least Nintendo still give the illusion of trying to care. Bring on Mario 3DS!

    @magnificentduke

    I bought my wii just for Galaxy 1. I bought my gamecube purely for Sunshine. My most treasured gaming memory is cycling to the video rental store every saturday because they had a SNES set up with SMW.

    I grew up with mario, and they have always been some of the best games ever made. They tend to define their genre with every generation.

    Can't wait for this.

  • acuratebob #23 1 year ago

    @Dreddnaught. Ever heard of Call Of Duty? Lol.

    On topic. I'm looking forward to this. Ain't had a decent Mario game for ages. Besides this Ocarina Of Time. This is a game I'm wanting for the 3DS.
